MIENA
Miena is a small lakeside town with excellent fishing, stunning scenery and lakeside rest and play.
Located in the heart of Tasmania's central highlands, Miena is a popular shack village for holiday-makers and keen fishers with Great Lake the main attraction. This is Australia's second largest freshwater lake. It sits one kilometre above sea level and supplies hydroelectricity as well as a bounty of fresh fish for keen anglers.
It's also one of the coldest places in Tasmania, swelling in population in the warmer months and providing a stunning snow-covered landscape in winter that's best enjoyed by a log fire.
Activities in Miena are many and varied, from trout fishing and bushwalking to bird-watching and lakeside relaxation.
The nearby Central Plateau Conservation Area is known as the Land of a Thousand Lakes and contains a stunning glacial and alpine landscape that forms part of the Tasmanian World Heritage Wilderness Area.
Accommodation in and around Miena includes lakeside hotels and self-contained lodges and shacks.
Miena is a 1 hr 30-min drive (110 km) south from Launceston and a 1 hr 40-min drive (132 km) north from Hobart.
Experience Snow in MIENA and GREAT LAKE
Visited Tasmania's coldest place, Miena and the third-largest freshwater lake in Tassie, Great Lake. The site snowed during winter and became green bushland during summer. Best place to do snow trips and witness snow, snowflakes, snow fights as the temperature reaches negative degrees. During summer, Great lake has plenty of activities to enjoy from, best for trout fishing and bushwalking to bird-watching and lakeside relaxation.
Bothwell has 60 heritage cottages and shacks. One of the great place to visit if you are into convict trails.

Playing in Snow / Miena - Great Lake Hotel
On the weekend of 18th and 19th August, 2018 there was a large dump of snow up on the Great Lake Plateau.
So we went up to the Great Lake Hotel to take a look at all the fuss.
It seems to be the place to go to for all 4x4 loving drivers on a Sunday afternoon, with a great atmosphere in the pub and outside as the kids ( big & small ) played in the snow.

This is just a quick video with imagery from a trip to the great lake and Tasmanian highlands. my Saturday afternoon. Passing through the lake and highland regions of Tasmania. Considering it was a beautiful sunny winters day there was snow in the hills which is not uncommon.
The distance from the town of Deloraine and then around the lake is approximately 190 kilometres.
