Great Malvern Priory explored
The Priory Church of St. Mary & St. Michael in Malvern, Worcestershire was my final stop during the two months spent in England. The priory was originally built as a Benedictine Monastery in 1085 on land belonging to Westminster Abbey. Upon the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1540 under King Henry VIII, the citizens of the town raised £20 and bought the building in 1541 to replace their dilapidated parish church.
Over the centuries, extensions & re-modelling have altered the look of the building, but the original Norman architecture is still much in evidence.
The church is known for having the largest display of 15th century stained glass in England, a large collection of medieval floor and wall tiles, together with numerous fine monuments & memorials. The effigies of John Knottsford, servant of King Henry VIII who died in 1589, his wife Jane and their daughter, Anne. The recumbent figure of Sophie Thomson, circa 1838 by Peter Hollins are amongst the finest.
Of particular note, the medieval misericords dating back to the 14 & 15th centuries. The carvings include scenes from daily life, satirical & allegorical subjects, beasts and the months of the year.

Great Malvern Priory Mystery Play 2019
This video gives a taste of the music, music for the play has been specially composed by Piers Maxim, Director of Music at Malvern Priory for orchestra and choir, and scenes from the Great Malvern Priory Mystery Play featuring photos from the dress rehearsal.
“Mystery Plays were first created to complement the stories told in stained glass windows in churches. This play has been written especially for Malvern and made relevant for today’s world by Malvern professional prize-winning director and actor, Rob Swinton, who directed a very successful Mystery Play at the Priory in 2000. He has combined texts from the 15th and 16th century with the Townley Cycle and it tells the story of Creation through to God’s last trump.”
Tickets are available within the Priory at the Friends’ Bookshop, on line via the Priory website at: or from Malvern TIC.
A limited number of tickets may be available on the door.

Great Malvern Priory Bells
A short view of the pre-1887 bells being rung. These bells have been rung together like this since 1707 and they have a combined age of 2,387 years. The six bells you hear in this video were augmented in 1887 to a ring of eight by adding a treble, tenor and a flat fifth. The new bell frame which was installed at that time has never been satisfactory and now need extensive work to make it usable for the next 150 years. With the three Victorian bells and the Sanctus bell included the combined age of the bells at Great Malvern Priory is 3,428 years. Lets keep them ringing!

Reducing rounds at Great Malvern Priory.
December 31st, new Year's eve 2013.
About ten minutes before midnight on new year's eve the Priory ringers traditionally bid farewell to the passing year by an unusual burst of rounds. We begin on eight and after a while the treble stands leaving the back seven bells ringing rounds. Then the second stands, then the third and so on, until only the tenor is left, tolling for the year that has gone. The tenor then stands and there is a gap of some five minutes before the new year begins.
