I still don't understand the difference in the Islam version of Mouridism that the Touba Brotherhood practices. The local guide speeded through his spiel about the stunning Great Mosque that left me totally confused. Perhaps a viewer can enlighten all of us further....

Senegal's influential Mouride Brotherhood on Friday will inaugurate a 30,000-capacity mosque in the capital Dakar, touted as the largest in West Africa and rivalling its opulent peers in Arab nations.

Exécutant alors fidèlement les vœux de Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba, les Talibés Mourides continuèrent à participer activement aux travaux d'édification soit en amenant des pierres, soit en versant au Khalif des dons destinés à la poursuite de la construction.La Mosquée fut inaugurée le vendredi 7 juin 1963 par El Hadji Mouhammadou Falilou MBacké Ibn Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba. L'inauguration du sanctuaire a attiré plus de 70.000 personnes. La construction d'un des plus grands monuments religieux musulmans d'Afrique aura duré 32 ans, nécessité 1.800.000 heures de travail selon les estimations, 4.800 tonnes de pierres, de sable et d'acier. La Grande Mosquée, épicentre de la religieuse cité, domine de sa masse imposante tous les édifices de Touba. Elle est pourvue de 4 minarets de 66 mètres de haut aux angles et d'un de 86,80 mètres, et est surmontée de 3 grandes coupoles. The Great Mosque, the epicenter of the religious city, dominates all its imposing buildings of Touba. It is equipped with four minarets 66 meters high at the corners and one of 86.80 meters, and is topped by three large domes. The ornament of the roof consists of small domes and small lanterns.

Great Mosque in Touba, Senegal
The Great Mosque of Touba is a mosque in Touba, Senegal. It was founded by Amadou Bamba in 1887 and completed in 1963. Bamba died in 1927 and is interred inside the mosque. Since his death the mosque is being controlled by his family. It is the largest building in the city and one of the largest mosques in Africa, with a capacity of 7,000. It is the site of a pilgrimage, the Grand Magal of Touba.
It is the home of the Mouride Brotherhood, a Sufi order.
The mosque has five minarets and three large domes. The central minaret is 87-metre tall, and is called Lamp Fall after Sheikh Ibrahima Fall, one of the most influential disciples of the mosque's founder Bamba.
The immediate vicinity of the mosque houses the mausoleum of Amadou Bamba’s sons, the caliphs of the Mouride order. Other important institutions in the center of the holy city include a library, the Caliph’s official audience hall, a sacred “Well of Mercy”, and a cemetery.
The Great Minaret of the Great Mosque of Touba is also commonly referred to as Lamp Fall, which was named by the second Mouride caliph in honour of Sheikh Ibrahima Fall.
For Mourides, Touba is a sacred place. Forbidden in the holy city are all illicit and frivolous pursuits, such as the consumption of alcohol and tobacco, the playing of games, music and dancing.
At the heart of the Mouride holy city lies its Great Mosque, purported to be one of the largest in Africa. Since its completion in 1963 it has been continuously enlarged and embellished. The mosque has five minarets and three large domes and is the place where Amadou Bamba, founder of the Mouride brotherhood, lies buried. The mosque’s high central minaret, called Lamp Fall, is one of Senegal’s most famous monuments. The name Lamp Fall is a reference to Sheikh Ibrahima Fall, one of Bamba’s most influential disciples.
Every year, millions of Muslims from all over the world make a pilgrimage to Touba (Magal), worshipping at the mosque and honouring the memory of Sheikh Amadou Bamba. On one occasion during the pilgrimage, Mouride believers pray facing the Atlantic ocean, to commemorate Bamba’s legendary prayer on the water.

SUBSCRIBE: - Let's visit The Dakar Grand Mosque (French: Grande Mosquée de Dakar) which is one of the most important religious buildings in the capital of Senegal. Designed by French and Moroccan architects, The Grand Mosque was opened in 1964 by Hassan II, King of Morocco and Senegalese President Léopold Sédar Senghor.
Richly decorated on the interior and exterior, it is stylistically similar to the Mausoleum of Mohammed V in Casablanca. Its minaret rises to 67 meters.
