Escape to Cooktown Qld
Cooktown is located in far north Queensland and is one of the most stunning parts of Australia. It was where Captain Cook ran aground and the James Cook Museum still to this day holds the original anchor from The Endeavor. The waterways are crystal clear and is a must for all avid fishermen. The Aboriginal tours with Guurrbi tours is another must do in Cooktown. The roads are all sealed to get here so any type of vehicle will do!
Cooktown, North Queensland
Cooktown is a town and locality in the Shire of Cook, Queensland, Australia. Cooktown is located about 2,000 kilometres north of Brisbane and 328 kilometres north of Cairns, by road. Cooktown is about 857 kilometres south of Cape York by road. At the time of the 2016 census, Cooktown had a population of 2,631.
Cooktown, on the eastern coast of Cape York Peninsula, is 1600 km north of Brisbane and 650 km from Torres Strait. Cooktown grew rapidly as the nearest port for the Palmer River gold rush in the 1870s. By the 1880s, its population peak, one-fifth of its residents were Chinese. The town declined rapidly in the first two decades of the twentieth century and by the 1950s it was almost a ghost town. Tourism gradually came to its rescue. Its relative isolation and its spectacular setting on Cape York drew increasing numbers from the 1980s. #cooktown #daintree #charters towers #townsville #Nebo, Central Queensland #dorrigo #Uralla #Dangars Gorge #gostwyck chapel #Glen Innes #Dalby Region, Darling Downs, Queensland #lake broadwater #The Entrance NSW #Lane Cove Sydney, NSW #Childers festival, Queensland #Bathurst, New South Wales #Tenterfield NSW #Springbrook National Park #Palm Beach.

Great driving roads for a hill climb - kennedy highway carins to kuranda - North QLD road trip
I was sent to cooktown for work and drove up and back from Cairns. on the way up I found 3 good mountain roads, perfect for a good sports car or even to run a hill climb even on. I thought I'd share. the 1st one in the vid is on the mulligan highway about an hour south of cooktown. the 2nd is about 20 mins west of Mount Carbine and the last and best when going in this direction is on the kennedey highway from kuranda to cairns.
Cooktown, Far North Queensland, Australia
Cooktown is a small coastal town in tropical north Queensland. In 1770 Captain James Cook landed on the banks of the Endeavour River repairing his ship Endeavour, after it ran aground on the Great Barrier Reef. A century later, in 1873, it became the port for the Palmer River Goldfields. Today it is billed as the gateway to the wilderness. It offers Mountains, Outback terrain, as well as some of the top scuba diving around. Although it still has well developed facilities, the town has more of a frontier feel, as is vastly different to the resort towns further south along the coast.
The first European to visit Cooktown was in 1770 when Captain Cook holed his ship on a reef just south of Cooktown and had to beach his ship at the mouth of the Endeavour River to undertake repairs. He spent 48 days here. Over 100 years later, Cooktown became one of the main gateways into Australia with the gold rush to the Palmer River. Grand permanent buildings were established, and the population boomed. A railway was even constructed from Cooktown to the goldfields.
With the passing of the goldrush days, and a decline in shipping, Cooktown went into decline. The town was frequently cut off by flooding in the wet, and the gravel road to Cooktown was washed out frequently. Cooktown became a victim of its isolation.
The visit of the Queen Elizabeth II to Cooktown in 1970 still rates highly in the history of the town.
The sealed road made it to Cooktown in the 1990s, bringing with it a small resurgence in the fortunes of the town, with the arrival of tourism. The town's population has never recovered to the level of the goldrush days, but today is slowly increasing.

Cape York 4WD travel video guide Far North Queensland Australia
We decided to take on the ultimate Australian 4WD adventure and head up Queenslands Cape York Peninsula to Australias most northern point.
There are a number of ways you can tackle this drive experience. You can take on the OTT or OTL (Old Telegraph line track) where you will experience the great remote wilderness of Australia. This track starts at Bramwell junction and finishes at the Jardine River. There are two bypass roads that allow travellers to get from the Peninsula Development Road to The Tip without having to navigate all of the creek crossings and rough roads. They pass mainly through the highlands to the east and west of the route, and are heavily corrugated which makes for a rough drive.
If you decide to take on the challenge of the OTT there are a number of creek crossings along the way, some more challenging than others. Along the way the track reconnects with the Bypass road so you can bypass some of the more challenging crossings if need be.
Palm creek, Gunshot, cockatoo creek are some of the more challenging crossings we take on, however there is some pretty spectacular places you will come across on the track like the beautiful elliot falls, twin falls and fruit bat falls all of which provide a great place to cool of or camp for the night.

3 Day Rock Art, Rainforest & Cooktown Safari
Jowalbinna is an inspiring rock art safari camp near Laura in lower Cape York. It contains an extensive range of Quinkan rock art sites, rated by UNESCO as one of the top ten rock art bodies in the world. Aboriginal occupation dates back over 30,000 years and the images of Quinkan spirits, totem animals and people adorn many of the rock shelters.
Scenic bushwalks pass through green eucalypt valleys and sandstone escarpments. The busy bird population includes over species and wallabies are permanent residents. The creeks have permanent swimming holes (no Estuarine Crocodiles here!) and many peaceful spots just to take in the wildlife.
