Exploring The Great Rann Of Kutch
The Rann of Kutch is a large area of salt marshes located mostly in Gujarat (primarily the Kutch district), India and the southern tip of Sindh, Pakistan. It is divided into two main parts: Great Rann of Kutch and Little Rann of Kutch.
The Rann of Kutch is located in the Thar Desert bio-geographic area in the Indian state of Gujarat, with some parts in Pakistani province of Sindh. It is a seasonally marshy region, the word Rann meaning salt marsh, alternating with medaks, elevated pieces of land where vegetation grows. Kori Creek and Sir creek are located in Rann of Kutch area which is part of Indus river delta.
Kutch is the name of the district in Gujarat where this region is situated. The marsh covers a huge area of around 10,000 square miles and is positioned between the Gulf of Kutch and the mouth of the Indus River in southern Pakistan. Many rivers located in Rajasthan and Gujarat flow in to Rann of Kutch. These are Luni, Bhuki, Bharud, Nara, Kharod, Banas, Sarswati, Rupen, Bambhan, Machchhu, etc

The Great Rann of Kutch | India's Largest White Dessert - Part 1
The Great Rann of Kutch is a seasonal salt marsh located in the Thar Desert in the Kutch District of Gujarat, India and the Sindh province of Pakistan. It is about 7,505.22 square kilometres (2,897.78 sq mi) in size and is reputed to be one of the largest salt desert in the world. This area has been inhabited by the Kutchi people.
The name Rann comes from the Hindi word ran (रण) meaning desert. The Hindi word is derived from Sanskrit/Vedic word iriṇa (इरिण) attested in the Rigveda and Mahābhārata. As early as 325 BCE, Alexander the Great was aware of the area.

In India's summer monsoon, the flat desert of salty clay and mudflats, which average 15 meters above sea level, fills with standing water. In very wet years, the wetland extends from the Gulf of Kutch on the west through to the Gulf of Cambay on the east.

The Exploited Salt Workers Of India's Great Rann of Kutch (2000)
Salt Workers (2000): Indian salt mine workers are employed in horrendous conditions and are exploited ruthlessly. Now their livelihood is threatened by the campaigns of environmentalists who claim that salt mining is accelerating deforestation.

Like generations before them, and 30,000 other families today, Savita's family mines salt for US$50 a year. Many are nomadic tribes and untouchables, who have no caste. The salt eats away at their hands and feet, and their eyes are blinded by the glare. Many borrow money from traders, who are accused of being in cahoots with politicians and making vast profits, while workers on the ground earn next to nothing. Now I realise how much the traders exploit and cheat me. All I can do is put my thumbprint on paper. Efforts are being made to educate the younger generation - The Sewa Organisation takes care of children until age 7, educating and feeding them. But bad news is on the horizon; environmentalists claim salt mining has to stop, as deforestation is threatening the Indian wild ass. The salt workers lament that they are considered less important than animals.

The marsh can be accessed from the village of Kharaghoda in Surendranagar District.
There are several wildlife sanctuaries and protected reserves on the Indian side in the Rann of Kutch region. From the city of Bhuj, various ecologically rich and wildlife conservation areas of the Kutch/Kachchh district can be visited such as Indian Wild Ass Sanctuary, Kutch Desert Wildlife Sanctuary, Narayan Sarovar Sanctuary, Kutch Bustard Sanctuary, Banni Grasslands Reserve and Chari-Dhand Wetland Conservation Reserve.
In India the northern boundary of the Greater Rann of Kutch forms the International Border between India and Pakistan, it is heavily patrolled by India's Border Security Force (BSF) and Indian Army conducts exercises here to acclimatize its troops to this harsh terrain.
This inhospitable salty lowland, rich in natural gas, was one scene of perennial border disputes between India and Pakistan that, in April 1965, contributed to the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965. Later the same year, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Harold Wilson persuaded the combatants to end hostilities and establish a tribunal to resolve the dispute. A verdict was reached in 1968 which saw Pakistan getting 10% of its claim of 9,100 square kilometres (3,500 sq mi). 90% was awarded to India, although India claimed 100% of the region. Tensions spurted again in 1999 during the Atlantique Incident.

Though the creek has little military value, it holds immense economic gain. Much of the region is rich in oil and gas below the sea bed, and control over the creek would have a huge bearing on the energy potential of each nation. Also once the boundaries are defined, it would help in the determination of the maritime boundaries which are drawn as an extension of onshore reference points. Maritime boundaries also help in determining the limits of Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs) and continental shelves. EEZs extend to 200 nautical miles (370 km) and can be subjected to commercial exploitation.

The area was a vast shallow of the Arabian Sea until continuing geological uplift closed off the connection with the sea, creating a vast lake that was still navigable during the time of Alexander the Great. The Ghaggar River, which presently empties into the desert of northern Rajasthan, formerly emptied into the Rann of Kutch, but the lower reaches of the river dried up as its upstream tributaries were captured by the Indus and Ganges thousands of years ago. Traces of the delta and its distributary channels on the northern boundary of the Rann of Kutch were documented by the Geological Survey of India in 2000.
