Great Rift Valley - Tanzania

This view of the Great Rift Valley was taken near the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania, Africa.
The Great Rift Valley

Rift! Geologic Clues to What's Tearing Africa Apart
(Visit: East Africa is one of the most geologically intriguing places on the planet—a place where the African continent is literally ripping apart. Deep rift valleys, active volcanoes, and hot springs are dramatic evidence for the powerful forces deep within the earth that are slowly reshaping the continent. Join geochemist David Hilton on an adventure to the East African Rift Valley and learn how he and his colleagues utilize geologic samples to understand this dynamic region of our planet. Africa is Splitting in Two at The Rift Valley to Form a New Continent
Welcome to 2nacheki's Africa Trending News where we bring to you the latest Africa News trending through all of social media.
A large crack, stretching several kilometres, made a sudden appearance recently in south-western Kenya. The tear, which continues to grow, caused part of the Nairobi-Narok highway to collapse and was accompanied by seismic activity in the area.

East Africa Day Leiden - The Rift Valley Linguistic Area 10 years on
Note: This talk has not gone through a process of peer review, and findings should therefore be treated as preliminary and subject to change
How to cite: Mous, Maarten. 2019. The Rift Valley Linguistic Area 10 years on: critical evaluation and the way forward. Talk given at East Africa Day Leiden 27/09/2019.
DOI:
Abstract: Kießling, Mous, and Nurse's The Tanzanian Rift Valley Area was published in Heine and Nurse's A Linguistic Geography of Africa in 2008, and went some way to establishing the Rift Valley Area as an object of linguistic inquiry. Approximately 10 years on, this talk aims to revisit this work. In the light of new data, new research methods, and new understandings of linguistic contact, linguistic change, and linguistic areas, the present marks an exciting point at which to reconsider the Rift Valley, and reexamine what it is and, more importantly, what it still has to teach us.

Language documentation: a view from the Tanzanian Rift Valley
Note: This talk has not gone through a process of peer review, and findings should therefore be treated as preliminary and subject to change.
How to cite: Harvey, Andrew. 2019. Language documentation: a view from the Tanzanian Rift Valley. Talk given at the African Studies Association of Africa conference, Nairobi, Kenya. 25/10/2019.
DOI:
Abstract: The concept of language documentation (especially as articulated in Himmelmann 1998), is experiencing radical changes in both theory and practice across the African continent (c.f. Seyfeddinipur (ed.) 2016). With a focus on the Tanzanian Rift Valley Area (largely as conceived by Kießling, Mous, and Nurse 2008), this talk examines how language documentation in Africa 1) is strongest when it takes into account the performativeness at the core of communicative practices; 2) has met with general failure when serving agendas of text-based maintenance and revitalization; and 3) shows great promise when it seeks to work within and strengthen traditions of orality (c.f. Ameka 2015).

Escarpment Road in Kenya- the Great Rift Valley Masai Mara (Nairobi to Narok)
This is a video of the famous great rift valley escarpment road between Nairobi and Narok counties in Kenya. The road offers an amazing view of Kenya's great rift valley masai mara grassland plains. It also has no barriers, several blindspots, queues of long vehicle trucks and passenger buses/coaches racing to get to their destinations. You're also likely to see baboons along the road.

The Lakes Of The Great Rift Valley Travel Guide (East Africa) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Documentary about the Lakes of the Great rift Valley in East Africa.
The Great Rift Valley is part of a huge geological fault in East Africa. This fascinating deep scar in the Earth’s crust that divides Kenya in a north-south direction, extends for nine thousand kilometres within a wild and seemingly endless landscape. The fault is particularly famous for its soda, alkaline and freshwater lakes such as Lake Naivasha that is located a hundred kilometres from Nairobi. As with many other lakes in the Great Rift Valley, with more than four hundred bird species Lake Naivasha is a true paradise among ornithologists. The tranquillity of the lake can be quite deceptive and the Massai name of the lake, En-Aiposha, meaning ‘back and forth’, is an indication of how turbulent Naivasha can sometimes be. A friendly welcome awaits visitors to Crescent Island at the southern end of Lake Naivasha. This idyllic island is located on the edge of a submerged volcanic crater and as there are no dangerous animals on the island it can be explored at leisure. Lake Nakuru’s main attraction is its flamingo population. Up to two million of these birds once lived here and even today they have transformed the lake into a mass of dazzling colour. Cormorants, heron and pelican are among the most important birds on Lake Nakuru. They each survive on fish of which the lake has an abundant supply. Located below the six hundred metre high Laikipia Escarpment, Lake Bogoria is the most spectacular lake in the Great Rift Valley. As with most lakes in this region Lake Bogoria is alkaline due to its lack of outlets yet at the same time it is paradise for the flamingo. The fascinating lakes of the Great Rift Valley are one of the most outstanding highlights of Kenya’s landscape and one of the most spectacular areas on the entire African continent.
