Lakes of Kenya
Natron, Bogoria, Nakuru, Magadi, Naivasha, Turkana ... To name only some of the lakes that dotted the floor of the Great Rift Valley. Each of them is associated to an extinct volcano and is home to a rich wildlife.
Great Rift Valley, Kenya
The Great Rift Valley is part of an intra-continental ridge system that runs through Kenya from north to south. It is part of the Gregory Rift, the eastern branch of the East African Rift, which starts in Tanzania to the south and continues northward into Ethiopia. It was formed on the Kenyan Dome a geographical upwelling created by the interactions of three major tectonics: the Arabian, Nubian, and Somalian plates. In the past, it was seen as part of a Great Rift Valley that ran from Madagascar to Syria. Most of the valley falls within the former Rift Valley Province.
The valley contains the Cherangani Hills and a chain of volcanoes, some of which are still active. The climate is mild, with temperatures usually below 28 °C (82 °F). Most rain falls during the March–June and October–November periods. The Tugen Hills to the west of Lake Baringo contain fossils preserved in laval flows from the period 14 to 4 million years ago. The relics of many hominids, ancestors of humans, were found here.

LAKE TURKANA EXCURSIONS
The long body of Lake Turkana drops down along the Rift Valley from the Ethiopian border, extending 249 kilometers from north to south and 44 km at its widest point with a depth of 30 meters. It is Africa's fourth largest lake, fondly called the Jade Sea because of its breathtaking color.
The Central Island in Lake Turkana, is made up of three active volcanoes that belch sulphurous smoke and steam. Three crater lakes, Crocodile Lake, Flamingo Lake and Tilapia Lake, provide breeding grounds for the world’s largest concentration of Nile crocodiles.

Lake Turkana Kite Surfari: Kenya 2019
Our final kitesurfing expedition of 2019 was to take us on a 3000 km round trip from Diani Beach through Central and Northern Kenya to the rugged western shores of Lake Turkana.
Formed roughly 4.3 million years ago during the tectonic upheavals that created East Africa’s Great Rift Valley, Turkana is the world’s largest permanent desert and alkaline lake.
Located in Kenya’s Northern Frontier District, Lake Turkana’s northern end extends as far as Ethiopia, with South Sudan and Uganda closely bordering.
Archaeologically, Turkana is world renowned for its 'Turkana Boy' discovery and is often referred to as the 'Cradle of Mankind'.

Turkana leaders end stalemate that blocked transportation of oil to Mombasa
Turkana County leaders have ended a stalemate that has seen a week long blockade stop the transportation of oil from the county to Mombasa. The blockade ended after the State assured of improved security in Turkana South and Turkana East Sub Counties that have experienced bandit attacks along the border with Baringo County. Rift Valley Regional Commissioner Mongo Chimwaga and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary John Munyes led the talks with the local community at Lokori in Turkana East.
