Heading East to the Midwest (Pt. 5) - Driving to Iowa...JUST BECAUSE!
July 1, 2015 - So, I land in Chicago, and my destination was to get to Cleveland...so of course, you drive WEST to Iowa, JUST BECAUSE! After a red-eye flight and about 2 hours of sleep, it might not have been the smartest idea, but I was running on first-day-of-vacation adrenaline, and I'll likely never be this close to Iowa again, so why not? One item on my bucket list is to visit every Canadian province and territory and American state, so big picture, I HAD to do it.
Well, most of this video was filmed along Interstate 88, the Ronald Reagan Memorial Tollway. Well, then I followed a beer truck off the road to find coffee and gas. Well, there was a lot of corn. Well, Nancy, uh, let's get a move on.
I then cross the mighty Mississippi River via Interstate 80 at the Illinois/Iowa border, near Le Claire, Iowa. 27th state, baby!
A Fish Fry for the Fish Guy | Baked Beer and Bread Company
By now there is no way you haven’t heard about our very own local viral sensation, the Fish Guy. But with his new found fame, came some unwanted attention from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. You see when Peter Robinson noodled that 50-pound catfish out of the water—he also gained a hefty fine. But don’t worry, local restaurant Baked Beer and Bread Company are here to help lead Peter some support with A Fish Fry for the Fish Guy.

Where in Iowa is Jeff?
Finally, after 5,000 miles on the road and 157 dance clips, the video of my tour of Iowa is complete. Filmed between May and November of 2007, it is my spoof of Matt Harding of wherethehellismatt.com. This video was shot entirely on my Canon PowerShot A540 and started as a goofy way to highlight the places I finally took the opportunity to see in my home state, places I have wanted to see since I was a kid. Trust me, there's a lot to see in the Hawkeye State besides corn and pigs and beans and cows and tractors and barns and silos. Don't believe it? Watch the video. Better yet, visit Iowa and see for yourself.

Yes, that really is Matt Harding dancing with me in the Inspiration by... clip. This summer, I was fortunate enough to dance with Matt with a group in Chicago for Matt's next around-the-world video. It's due out in June 2008. In the meantime:
Lastly, my apologies to Iowa City, Pella, Davenport, Marion, Waterloo, Mason City, Fairfield, Brooklyn, Forest City, Van Wert, and the other hundreds of cities, towns, parks, golf courses, and cool places that I did not have time to visit or shot crappy clips that didn't make the final cut. There is WAY too much in Iowa to see in one summer, but I made a good run at it.
Iowans, get away from your TV's and computers and go see your state!!! You really don't know what you're missing.

Missouri River as a Wildlife Highway, by Todd Meese
Missouri River as a Wildlife Highway, Presentation by Todd Meese,
Wildlife Damage Biologist with Missouri Dept. of Conservation
Big Muddy Speakers Series (Kansas City) hosted by
Healthy Rivers Partnership (
Lakeside Nature Center ( and
RiverRelief (
at the Westport Coffeehouse Theater (
- Tuesday, August 25, 2015.
Rivers have always served as biological highways, connecting
together different locations in a kind of riparian web. As humans
continue encroaching on habitat throughout the Midwest, the
Missouri River has become an even more important corridor of
wildlife dispersal.
Todd Meese’s work with the Missouri Dept. of Conservation has
revealed this importance with several species, both those that
use the water itself as a highway and those that use the ribbon
of forest along the Missouri River as cover for their travels.
Meese will talks about tracking the movement of the
increasing number of mountain lions sighted in the state (55
confirmed sightings since 2002). By detailed DNA analysis, he and
his colleagues determine most of these are juvenile
cats that originated in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Evidence
points to the animals using the Missouri and Platte River (NE)
corridors as their dispersal highway.
MDC tracks the movement of otters and beaver,
both of which use the Missouri River and its tributaries to
expand their territory with growing populations. Using these and
other species as examples, Meese with talk about the unique
stories of these animals as well as the general concept of our
river valleys as important corridors of wildlife movement and
habitat expansion.
