Great South West Walk -end to end - starting in Nelson, VIC - 250 km over 13 days
The Great South West Walk is a 250 km walking track, located in South West Victoria, Australia. The route passes through the Lower Glenelg National Park, the Cobboboonee National Park, the Discovery Bay Coastal Park and the Cape Nelson State Park. The hike is a 12 to 14 day circular hike starting and finishing in either Portland or Nelson.

This film features the insights and experiences of three walkers who traveled through this rugged and beautiful landscape. This unforgettable journey winds around three National Parks, the pristine Glenelg River and the vast Southern Ocean.

Earlier this year, Monday 18th Feb to Saturday 23rd Feb I hit the track again - this time the Great South West Walk - The Hidden Jewell.
This hike is an easy hike and can be easily accessed from a number of locations, very different from the Australian Alps Walking Track. Beginning at Portland, South Western Victoria, it’s best to travel anticlockwise so that you are assisted by the prevailing south westerly winds on the way back along the ocean beaches and clifftops.
My main objective was to be back in Geelong with Camilla on the Sunday. This meant about 42 or 43km per day average. Little did I know how difficult that would be on the beaches especially as the tides came in after lunch each day.
The camp sites are perfect and the views everything form peaceful through the forests to glorious along the ocean beaches.
Walking just one or two sections along the beaches is very possible.
I am rather glad that my heart attach did not happen during this hike as it is quite a remote location.
Perhaps this will be my last big hike!...but I hope not!

Portland - Australia's Leading Regional Cruise Destination
Located on Victoria’s south west coast, at the western end of the Great Ocean Road, Portland is steeped in history with rich indigenous culture and vast maritime heritage.
The city was the first permanent European settlement and is recognised as Victoria’s birthplace. It is also home of the Budj Bim Cultural Landscape, Australia’s newest world heritage site, and homeland of the Gunditjmara people. It is recognised as one of the earliest civilisations with remnants of circular stone dwellings. It also has remains of Australia’s first and largest freshwater stone aquaculture system.
Cruise ships can berth within the safe harbour of the deep-sea port, which is one of Australia’s oldest exporters of food and fibre.
The port is one of Victoria’s four commercial shipping ports and also a base for the large commercial trawler fleet, supplying a majority of Victoria’s deep sea catch.
Portland offers an abundance of memorable half and full day shore excursions, including nature based walks and unique wildlife viewing and adventure activities.
The town is awash with historical buildings and passengers keen to stretch their legs will take pleasure walking the CBD, which alone boasts over 200 buildings from the 1800’s including the oldest recorded building in Victoria.
