What Is The Mongolian Plateau?
The Mongolian Plateau is the part of the Central Asian Plateau lying between 37°46′-53°08′N and 87°40′-122°15′E and having an area of approximately 2,600,000 square kilometres (1,000,000 sq mi). It is bounded by the Greater Hinggan Mountains in the east, the Yin Mountains to the south, the Altai Mountains to the west, and the Sayan and Khentii mountains to the north. The plateau includes the Gobi Desert as well as dry steppe regions. It has an elevation of roughly 1,000 to 1,500 meters, with the lowest point in Hulunbuir and the highest point in Altai.
Politically, the plateau is divided between Mongolia, China and Russia. In China, parts of the Inner Mongolia and Xinjiang autonomous regions lie on the plateau. In Russia, the plateau forms part of Buryatia and the southern Irkutsk Oblast.

4,000 people sent to fight two forest fires in North China
About four thousand people have been sent to fight forest fires in North China's Inner Mongolia. There are still two fires remaining in China's largest forest in the Greater Hinggan Mountains, one in the Hanma National Nature Reserve, the other in the northern primeval area. A total of 14 forest fires broke out in the region on June 1 and June 2. They were all thought to be caused by lightning strikes. 12 of them have been put out. Strong winds, remote mountainous terrain, and dry vegetation made the firefighting extremely difficult.

Northeast China still in the bitter grip of winter
While many parts of China are in blossom with the spring season in full bloom, Hulunbuir in China’s northeast is still in the grips of “Old Man Winter”. A major snowfall blanketed the Inner Mongolia region at the turn of April, causing some highways to close, and even forcing the local airport to temporarily shut down. Although it may not look so warm, the snow is likely to protect forests along the Greater Khingan mountain range from wildfires. Elsewhere, heavy snow also hit Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region in northwest China on Saturday, where temperature had been soaring to 26 degrees Celsius before the snow fell.

Argun River Asia
Ergune or Argun is the river which is a part of the Russia–China border. Its upper reaches are known as Hailar River in China. Its length is 1,621 kilometres (1,007 mi). The Ergune marks the border (established by the Treaty of Nerchinsk in 1689) between Russia and China for about 944 kilometres (587 mi), until it meets the Amur River. The name derives from Buryat Urgengol 'wide river' (urgen 'wide' + gol 'river'). Mongolian word ergün (in Traditional Mongolian alphabet) or örgön (in modern Mongolian) means wide. The river flows from the Western slope of the Greater Khingan Range in Inner Mongolia. Its confluence with Shilka River at Ust-Strelka forms the Amur River.
In years with high precipitation, the normally exitless Hulun Lake may overflow at its northern shore, and the water will meet the Ergune after about 30 kilometres (19 mi). The Kherlen–Ergune–Amur system has a total length of 5,052 kilometres (3,139 mi).
In The Secret History of the Mongols
In The Secret History of the Mongols is a legend related to the Ergüne hun Mongol ancestry. In this legend, the Mongols prevailed over other tribes and carried such slaughter among them, that in living remained no more than two men and two women. These two families, in fear of the enemy, fled to the inhospitable terrain, which included only mountains and forests and to which there was no road. Among those mountains was the abundant grass and healthy climate of the steppe. Then, legend tells that in Ergune-Khun, Mongols multiplied and become masters of iron smelting and blacksmithing. According to legend, it is the art of melting iron that has helped them escape from the mountain gorges on scope of the current Mongolian steppes, to the Kherlen River and Onon River.
