Nantucket: A Short Film by Oregon Poet Kim Stafford
In March 2013, the Nantucket Historical Association recently welcomed special guest poet and writer Kim Stafford to Nantucket for a week of outreach and creative writing programs.
Kim Stafford is Director of the Northwest Writers Institute at Lewis and Clark College in Oregon, and co-Director of the Documentary Studies Program at Lewis & Clark College. He is the author of a dozen books of poetry and prose, including The Muse Among Us: Eloquent Listening and Other Pleasures of the Writer's Craft and 100 Tricks Every Boy Can Do: How My Brother Disappeared.
While on the island, Stafford spent two days visiting with students at the Nantucket High School English department, and three days at various public events hosted by the NHA.
This week of poetry and creative writing programs is presented as a collaboration with the Nantucket Atheneum and with the generous support of the William Froelich Foundation. that included outreach in the local schools, an inspirational staff development meeting, a Food for Thought lecture, an evening of music and poetry at Greater Light, and a creative writing workshop. Kim created this film shortly after his arrival to the island that captures what he felt was the essence of the island with an emphasis on place.
Places to see in ( Boston - USA )
Places to see in ( Boston - USA )
Boston is Massachusetts’ capital and largest city. Founded in 1630, it’s one of the oldest cities in the U.S. The key role it played in the American Revolution is highlighted on the Freedom Trail, a 2.5-mile walking route of historic sites that tells the story of the nation’s founding. One stop, former meeting house Faneuil Hall, is a popular marketplace.
Boston's history recalls revolution and transformation, and today it is still among the country’s most forward-thinking and barrier-breaking cities. The arts have thrived in Boston ever since the 19th century, when this cultural capital was dubbed the Athens of America. Certainly, the intellectual elite appreciated their fine paintings and classical music, but they were also dedicated to spreading the cultural wealth, establishing museums, libraries and symphony orchestras for all to enjoy.
'Fanatic' is no idle word here. Boston fans are passionate about sports. And with the five-time world-champion Patriots, the long-overdue World Series–winning Red Sox, the winningest basketball team in history, the Celtics, and the highly successful and historic hockey team, the Bruins, there is a lot to be passionate about. Boston's college teams also inspire fierce loyalties and staunch rivalries. No less spirited is the country's oldest and most celebrated running event, the world-famous Boston Marathon, and the world's largest two-day rowing event, the Head of the Charles Regatta.
For all intents and purposes, Boston is the oldest city in America. And you can hardly walk a step over its cobblestone streets without running into some historic site. The Freedom Trail winds its way around the city, connecting 16 historically significant sites. These are the very places where history unfolded: from the first public school in America to Boston’s oldest church building to sites linked to America's fight for independence from Britain – Boston is, in effect, one fantastic outdoor history museum.
Boston is surrounded by the Greater Boston region and is contiguously bordered by the cities and towns of Winthrop, Revere, Chelsea, Everett, Somerville, Cambridge, Watertown, Newton, Brookline, Needham, Dedham, Canton, Milton, and Quincy. The Charles River separates Boston from Watertown and the majority of Cambridge, and the mass of Boston from its own Charlestown neighborhood. To the east lie Boston Harbor and the Boston Harbor Islands National Recreation Area (which includes part of the city's territory, specifically Calf Island, Gallops Island, Great Brewster Island, Green Island, Little Brewster Island, Little Calf Island, Long Island, Lovells Island, Middle Brewster Island, Nixes Mate, Outer Brewster Island, Rainsford Island, Shag Rocks, Spectacle Island, The Graves, and Thompson Island). The Neponset River forms the boundary between Boston's southern neighborhoods and the city of Quincy and the town of Milton. The Mystic River separates Charlestown from Chelsea and Everett, and Chelsea Creek and Boston Harbor separate East Boston from Boston proper.

Highland Lighthouse ~ Cape Cod, Ma.
This, to me was truly breathtaking. I’ve always wanted to know what a lighthouse looked like on the inside and I’m grateful to say I got that opportunity. Highland Light is still referred to as Cape Cod Lighthouse and this amazing structure is still in use today.
Happy Exploring ????
The Highland Light (previously known as Cape Cod Light) is an active lighthouse on the Cape Cod National Seashore in North Truro, Massachusetts. The current tower was erected in 1857, replacing two earlier towers that had been built in 1797 and 1831. It is the oldest and tallest lighthouse on Cape Cod.
In 1797, a station authorized by George Washington was established at this point on the Cape, with a wood lighthouse to warn ships about the dangerous coastline between Cape Ann and Nantucket. It was the first light on Cape Cod. In 1833, the wood structure was replaced by a brick tower and in 1840 a new lantern and lighting apparatus was installed. In 1857 the lighthouse was declared dangerous and demolished, and for a total cost of $17,000, the current 66-foot brick tower was constructed.
On June 6, 1900, the light was changed from a fixed beam to flashing, with a new. The new Barbier, Benard & Turenne first-order Fresnel lens had four panels of 0.92 meter focal distance, revolved in mercury, and gave, every five seconds, flashes of about 192,000 candlepower nearly one-half second in duration. While the new lens was being installed, the light from a third-order lens was exhibited atop a temporary tower erected near the lighthouse; it was later sold at auction. The Highland Light was then the most powerful on the east coast of the United States. Two four-horsepower oil engines with compressors operated by an engine fueled by kerosene, were added to ensure that the fog signal could be activated within ten minutes instead of the previous 45. A new fog signal was installed in 1929, an electrically operated air oscillator, to make it audible over a greater distance.
The lighthouse was converted to electric operation in 1932 with a 1000-watt beacon. In 1946, Highland Light's Fresnel lens was replaced by modern aerobeacons, first by a Crouse-Hinds DCB-36 double rotating light and then by a Carlisle & Finch DCB-224, with a second unit as backup. Unfortunately, the Fresnel lens was severely damaged when it was removed, but fragments are on display in the museum on site. The light was fully automated by 1986 with a Crouse-Hinds DCB-224 rotating beacon. In 1998, a VRB-25 optical system was installed. Most recently, the light source is a Vega Marine LED beacon model 44/2.5 installed in April 2017.
The current location of the lighthouse is not the original site. It was in danger of falling down the cliff due to beach erosion, so the structure was moved 450 feet (140 m) to the west. The government funding to do so was supplemented by money raised through fund raising by the Truro Historical Society. The move was accomplished by International Chimney Corp. of Buffalo, New York and Expert House Movers of Maryland over a period of 18 days in July, 1996. The move left the light station on Cape Cod National Seashore property, bordering the Highland Golf Course. After an errant golf ball broke a window, they were replaced with unbreakable material. In 1998, the keeper's house was modified to be a gift shop and museum.

Utility workers boarded a ferry to Nantucket to try to restore power to one of the places hardest hi
FOR CLEAN VERSION SEE STORY NUMBER: apus024995
Utility workers are trying to restore power to Nantucket where islanders there accounted for about half the 7,200 people in Massachusetts still without electricity.
Nantucket was lashed with winds gusting to 76 mph, after a storm buried a swath of New England in 2 to 3 feet of snow.
Workers and their trucks boarded a ferry to Nantucket on Wednesday.
Bob Parent, who is from Canada, says Massachusetts has more snow than his hometown.
You know, it's funny I'm from Canada and we're supposed to be the snow country, Parent said before boarding a ferry to Nantucket to help restore power and cleanup. There's a lot more snow right now here than there's home.
About 3,500 customers on the island remained without power at mid-day today, nearly half of the state's total.
Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker said he will be requesting federal damage assistance and is asking communities to tally their damage reports.

New Bedford is a city in Bristol County, Massachusetts, United States. As of the 2010 census, the city had a total population of 95,072, making it the sixth-largest city in Massachusetts. New Bedford is nicknamed The Whaling City because during the 19th century, the city was one of the most important, if not the most important, of whaling and fishing ports in the world, along with Nantucket, Massachusetts and New London, Connecticut.[2] The city, along with Fall River, Massachusetts and Taunton, Massachusetts, make up the three largest cities on the South Coast region of Massachusetts. The Greater Providence-Fall River-New Bedford area is home to the largest Portuguese-American community in the United States.

JBS Haldane Lecture 2018 : Prof. John Tresch - Barnum, Bache and Poe: Forging Science in a Media Revolution.
The Department of Science and Technology Studies holds its second JBS Haldane Lecture of 2018 with Professor John Tresch of The Warburg Institute, discussing the history of PT Barnum, Alexander Dallas Bache, and Edgar Allen Poe - their relation to developments in science during that era, and the similarities with present-day America.
The JBS Haldane Lecture Series is the flagship public lecture series from the Department of Science and Technology Studies at UCL. Named in honour of UCL Professor JBS Haldane, a polymath not only in the life sciences but also in science communication and science policy, the department aims to hold these biannually. More details can be found on the STS Website at
Abstract:
Today’s scientific and political institutions face severe challenges, nowhere more visibly than in the USA— where scientific evidence of climate change is scorned by a media-obsessed president whose heroes include the nativist demagogue Andrew Jackson and the con-artist P.T. Barnum. This lecture returns to the 1830s and 1840s, the era of Barnum, Jackson, and a communications revolution, to explore competing visions of the cosmos and of the relation between science and the demos in a moment of turmoil. Two opposed tendencies characterised antebellum public culture: first, a sharp increase in printed communication, with periodicals, audiences, styles, and authors exploding in number and diversity; second, a coordinated movement by educated elites to control knowledge through centralised and hierarchical institutions. In the sciences, the Lyceum movement and Barnum’s “American Museum” typified the first, while the U.S. Coast Survey, directed by Benjamin Franklin’s great grandson, the West Point-educated polymath, Alexander Dallas Bache, exemplified the second.
The work of Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) was shaped by both tendencies. Trained at West Point, Poe wrote frequently about the sciences, even as he invented new forms of literary sensationalism. He “forged” American science and letters in two senses: by supporting projects to establish a unified and regulated intellectual infrastructure, and by crafting believable fakes which fed popular uncertainty about authority over knowledge. Poe thus offers astute, prophetic, and dramatically conflicted commentary on science, its publics, and the stories it tells.

Greater Kankakee (KIKK) to Central Illinois Regional Airport at Bloomington-Normal (KBMI)
Welcome back to my tour around the world. There is a lot of content we'll be covering in this episode. Due to the unfortunate accident from the last episode, we've needed to get a new plane. For the first hour, we'll be reviewing the good and bad of the new, Milviz Cessna T310R. We'll then roll this out and fly to our destination which is Bloomington-Normal. During the last hour, we'll learn a little more about the airport and drive into town to see some sights!
** Note on the Milviz Cessna T310R -- I found out later that the lights on the plane work much better with the graphics set to HDR or above. It was set to Medium on this video **
This video is epic in length due to the amount of content that we are covering. Below is a list of chapters that helps break up the video into parts:
