Chester River Farm, 1135 Lands End Road
The Chester River is one of the quintessential tributaries of the Chesapeake Bay. Rich in history and fairly unchanged from past centuries, the river links two of the best towns the Eastern Shore has to offer: Centreville and Chestertown. With colonial architecture lining the streets, it is easy to imagine life during the booming era of tobacco. Today these towns continue to thrive through their gourmet restaurants, charming boutiques, street festivals and a variety of outdoor activities offered year-round. Shop at the popular farmers markets open early spring through October, which offer produce, meats, wines and bakery fresh items that only the fertile Eastern Shore has to offer. Take a sunset cruise on the Chester River Packet, a 1920’s style river boat. Watch a log canoe regatta; a unique type of classic sailboat that can only be found on the Eastern Shore. Tour vineyards, go fishing for rockfish, eat oysters and blue crabs dusted in Old Bay with super sweet and local corn-on-thecob, watch herons and ospreys fish along the water’s edge and admire the sprawling green fields and forests that span the river. Nowhere else can you enjoy the quiet, less-inhabited beauty of life on the water while still being an easy commute to D.C., Baltimore and Annapolis.
BUS COUNTRY: Land's End to John O'Groats (Day 4 - Thursday 25th August 2011)
Leeds - Whitby - Middlesbrough - Newcastle - Berwick Upon Tweed....
Relentlessly continuing our pursuit of bus travel, the trail leads on to the North East of England and eventually the verges of the England/Scotland border. And some rather incredible scenery is encountered as progress is made too, making for some quite outstanding images. This part is preceded with a short discussion by James Aukett, explaining what he does for a living and various other aspects of this adventure.

Loyal Sons Of Benagh @ Dochy Farm New British Cemetery 26/05/19
Loyal Sons Of Benagh Flute band from Newry in Co. Down, Northern Ireland visiting the grave of Sgt. Jimmy Speirs MM (Service No. S/18170) at Dochy Farm New British Cemetery on Sunday 26/05/19 as part of their Battlefield Pilgrimage held back in May 2019.
James Hamilton Speirs (22nd March 1886 - 20th August 1917) was a Scottish footballer who represented his country once in 1908, scored the winning goal in the FA Cup Final in 1911 and received the Military Medal during WW1.
He was born on 22nd march 1886 in the Govan area of Glasgow, the 5th of 6 children of James Hamilton Speirs & Janet Shields Speirs.
He started his football career playing youth football for Annandale before moving to local junior team Maryhill where he played for less than a season, before moving to Glasgow Rangers in 1905. After 3 years he moved to Clyde but after 1 season he moved south of the border and joined Bradford City. His greatest success came in his 2nd season with Bradford when he was the club's captain and goalscorer in the FA Cup Final victory in 1911. After another 2 seasons with Bradford he joined Leeds City but after 2 seasons the First World War broke out. League football continued for 1 more season at the end of which Jimmy Speirs returned to his native Glasgow.
Married to Elizabeth Lennox Maben on 24th October 1906 they had 2 children James & Elizabeth.
Speirs would have been exempt from conscription but he volunteered to join the Queens Own Cameron Highlanders in 1915. He was promoted to Lance Corporal, Corporal & then Sergeant and won the Military Medal for bravery in the field but was killed during the Battle Of Passchendaele in August 1917 at the age of 31.
Alan G. Brydon who wrote the well known songs Callin Doon The Line & On The Road To Passchendaele was commissioned to write a new song to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Battle Of Passchendaele in 1917. What he came up with was the song entitled Jimmy's Song / Sing For The Boys which was about Sgt. Jimmy Speirs a famous person not obliged to enlist but who volunteered with ordinary folk to serve his country in its time of need. A reflection of how selfless our forbears were to ensure our freedom. (Copyright Alan G. Brydon)
The song is played in this clip by the band, the piper and also sang by Jim English towards the end of the clip.
Alan's version of the song and accompanying video can be found on Youtube and has been played on the big screens at both Rangers Ibrox Stadium & Bradford City's Valley Parade.
Song Lyrics ~ Sing For The Boys (Jimmy's Song) Copyright: Alan G Brydon
Down at the drill hall, the boys all wait to sign
Each one determined to join the western line
They swear their allegiance to country and to King
Proud as the football sons they sing
A boy sees his hero, says hey that's Jimmy Speirs
He should be playing football, he's no ned to be here
But jimmy smiled politely, it's my duty nothing more
Boys we've a bigger goal to score
Sing For The Boys
Sing For Them All
All Sent To Fight, Till The Last Soldier Falls
Sing For The Boys
Row After Row
Destined To Lie Where The Red Poppies Grow
The boys land in Flanders, their journey's just begun
Jimmy's swapped his football for a bayonet and a gun
The songs the crowds were singing, still ringing in his ears
As he fought a a loyal volunteer
When the army marches homeward singing songs along their way
Jimmy's won't be with them, where he fell is where he'll stay
The Great War is over, it's no ninety minute game
Four years, three months and fourteen days
Chours
Since Alan wrote the song quite a number of marching bands have taken the song and put their own 'take' on it and have played it at various parades throughout Northern Ireland & Scotland.

over 1600 ft. Waterfront off Mobjack/Chesapeake Bay
See websites for Photos, Terms & Conditions.
“Lands End” is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The land was originally part of the Robins Patent granted in 1637; the property contains 35+ acres at the Southern end of Robins Neck overlooking the Severn River off the Mobjack and Chesapeake Bays. Property has over 1500 ft of water frontage with a pier.
“Lands End”, built in 1795 by the highly decorated Revolutionary War privateer Cpt. John Sinclair, is one of Virginia’s most intriguing Estates. The property, widely rumored to house the builder’s buried treasure, is a 3-story brick structure with Dutch Colonial roof, set well back from the Severn River, affording a water view over expansive fields. He positioned his manor house far enough from shore to be out of reach of cannonball fire from enemy vessels or pirates and insisted on facing South.
One of the former owners, Claude Lanciano, wrote 2 books about the property: “Legends of Lands End” in 1971 and “Captain John Sinclair of Virginia” 1973. With the additions in 1840 to present and the restorations, the home has 6 bedrooms, 5 bathrooms, Kitchen, Living Room, Family Room, Dining Room, Utility Room, a total of 17 rooms and 11 Fireplaces. Happy New Year Everyone!!
While staying at my parents house for Christmas, I could not resist a couple of visits to my childhood playground, where i had some very happy times, riding out ponies/horses & driving tractors, while helping out in my spare time on the racehorse stud/stables & livestock farm. Planning permission has been granted for it's multi - housing redevelopment.
