Leaving Naxos town, the tour visits the mainland.Galanado is the first village we come across, which offers view to the fertile fields which produce the famous naxian potato. Outside the village rises the Bellonias tower. First stop is the small village Damalas, where we visit a traditional ceramics workshop. In the same village, there is also the possibility to visit a restored traditional olive press. We continue through the fertile valley of Tragaia and passing through age-old olive, plane and oak trees, vines and fruit groves surrounded by towering summits we stop at the village Halki with its mansions and the interesting Byzantine church of Panagia Protothroni. There we visit the citrus distillery which produces the homonymous local liqueur. Then we visit the Byzantine church of Panagia Drosiani, near the village of Moni, a monument of the early Christian period with interesting frescoes, which is considered to be one of the oldest in the Balkans. The church, part of an old monastery, has a unique architectural style, with bare stone-walls, a three-part attic with dome and three adjoining chapels on the northern side with square dome bases on their roofs. Some of the frescoes that have been saved date to the 6th century, while the rest belong to the period between the 11th and 14th centuries. Next stop is Apiranthos or t’Aperathou in local dialect, is built at the foot of Mt. Fanari. Venetian towers, pretty, old two-storey houses, marble paved alleys with arches above them, picturesque squares combine to create a rare atmosphere. Apiranthos has 3 interesting museums. The Archaeological Museum mainly hosts finds of the Proto-Cycladic period, the Geological Museum features some rare and unique items among its approximately 2,000 exhibits, the Natural History Museum includes a collection of the area’s fauna, flora and a small aquarium, while the Folklore Museum displays traditional fabrics, embroidery and tools. Time for lunch at the local tavernas. One the way back, we visit the lush settings of Flerio, Melanes. The area was very important during antiquity. An aqueduct 11 kilometers long was recently discovered, a major engineering project in several historical phases, carrying water to Naxos town ensuring water supply. The ancient archaic marble quarry is also to be visited. There lies the imressive statue of Kouros, so called the “Greek”, 6,4 meters long, dated from the 7th century BC.
Only a Dual Sport can go to Church in Naxos Greece
Rented a CRF250L on the island of Naxos in Greece. Spectacular views are the norm and adventure is common. All over the island are these small tiny churches in remote places that are very difficult to get to and every time I see one while riding the Dual Sport I say challenge accepted!

Naxos Greece Dual Sport Adventure Part I (Mount Zas, Filoti, Church Agios Ioannis)
In May of 2019 I had the opportunity to travel to Greece and visit the island of Naxos. I rented a Honda crf250l for my adventure. This was a ride of a lifetime as Naxos is a Dual Sport paradise! I apologize for the poor GoPro mount, I didn't have my normal setup so all I had was a GoPro clip mount that clipped to my backpack.
Schinoussa - Videos from Greece
Schinoussa is located in the south of Naxos, in the middle about of the Lesser Cyclades island group. It is the fourth largest island of the Lesser Cyclades and the second most populated, after Ano Koufonisi. The island has three settlements, Chora the capital of the island, Mesaria and Mersini where is the port of the island. The derivation of the name Schinoussa is not precisely known. It is believed that the name either derives from the corruption of the ancient name Echinousa or from a Venetian nobleman named Schinoza. Schoinoussa has been inhabited since antiquity. On the island there are sites of archaeological interest including ancient Greek and Roman ruins, ruins of a Byzantine church and a small medieval castle. From the 11th century the island was the property of the Hozoviotissa Monastery on the nearby island of Amorgos.

Greek Easter - Good Friday the Epitaph procession
Religion is a major aspect of Greek society and therefore, Easter is one of the biggest celebrations.
The corresponding Greek word for Easter is “Lambri” meaning glorious or bright. As bright is the meaning of the resurrection of Christ, as glorious is the foretell that death is not the end.
All over the country, the most important highlights of the Holy Week are associated with the Epitaph (Epitaphios), the imitation of Christ's funeral bier.
The first ritual takes place on Good Friday morning where the Epitafios, is decorated by women and children with flowers they either buy or most often pick from the countryside or their own gardens. In the evening follows the mass and letter on the Epitaph procession take place. The litany through the city or village streets.
Leaving at Athens Flat holiday rental, you are lucky to be right in the heart of the city.
100 meters downstreet on Mitropoleos str. you will find yourself in Athens Cathedral where all the government officials are attending the mass.
If this is not attractive to you, don't worry! 100 meters downstreet Apollons str. you will find yourself in Plaka. Athens’ oldest and most picturesque neighborhood.
Choose one of the dozens old little chapels and celebrate the “Epitaphios” like Greeks do, following the procession under candlelight.

Panagia Drosiani Naxos - Church Of Drosiani Naxos
Located 2.5km north of Halki, just below Moni, the small, peaceful Panagia Drosiani is among the oldest and most revered churches in Greece. Inside is a series of cavelike chapels. In the darkest chapels, monks and nuns secretly taught Greek language and religion to local children during the Turkish occupation. Several frescoes still grace the walls, and date from the 7th century.
Naxos is a Greek island in the South Aegean, the largest of the Cyclades island group. Its fertile landscape spans mountain villages, ancient ruins and long stretches of beach. The namesake capital (also called Hora or Chora) is a port town filled with whitewashed, cube-shaped houses and medieval Venetian mansions. Kastro, a hilltop castle dating to the 13th century, houses an archaeological museum.
