Olympia Sanctuary - Greece - The City of Olympic Game Tourist Guide
Olympia, a sanctuary of ancient Greece in Elis on the Peloponnese peninsula, is known for having been the site of the Olympic Games in classical times.
The Olympic Games were held every four years throughout Classical antiquity, from the 8th century BC to the 4th century AD.
WELCOME to ANCIENT OLYMPIA GREECE - 2018 vlog
Welcome to ancient Olympia Greece! This is where the first Olympic Games were practiced in 776 BC. We tour the site of the ancient games, including the gym, the stadium, and temple of Zeus.
Unlike the modern games, the ancient Olympics were practice by free-born Greek men. The games were practiced here in Olympia rather than a different city each year. It is one of the great contributions the Greeks have passed on to modern times.
We run across the ancient starting line for the Olympic pentathlon. Next, we visit the Olympia Museum to visit the statues that were uncovered in Olympia.

Video Notes:
* Introduction to Excursions or Private Tours from Katakolon, Greece: *
The stop at Katakolon needs a tour for sure. There really isn’t much to do around the port. The only reason cruise ships stop here is for Olympia. I’m glad I got to see it because I would never fly to Athens and make the drive out to see Olympia, so this was a nice chance to see the things I read about in history books growing up.
I highly recommend a private tour company vs. any tours that you can book on the ship. Having your own private car and personal attention, especially on a short day like this one, was key.
Sights:
The first thing we did was see the archaeological museum. It would have cost an extra 130 euros if we wanted her to go in with us and explain everything we see.
I didn’t go to the olympic museum because we didn’t have enough time. Our tour guide told us that it was pretty boring because it’s basically just a rectangular ruin.
Hermes and the infant dionysus, by Praxiteles: this statue was discovered to be in very good condition in 1877. This statute is famous for being incredibly polished. Hermes is carrying the child dionysus to the nymphs who were charged with his rearing. The arm is missing, but they think he could be holding out a bunch of grapes for the child.
Nike of Paionios: This is an ancient statue of the Greek goddess of victory named Nike. It was originally on a pillar near the tempe of Zeus. This statue was installed to honor the recapture of Sphacteria from the Spartans in 425 BC. This is a statue of the greek goddness of victory which shows her gently landing on her left foot. This is where the brand Nike got its name.
The west pediment of the temple of zeus: this shows a big battle between centaurs and ancient Greeks. This was built around 460 BCE and it has 42 figures in total. It's crazy to see how well preserved it was and how emotional some of the figures are.
The Statue of Zeus at Olympia was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. It was a giant Zeus sculpture on a giant wooden throne with gold, ivory, precious stones and ebony. Sadly it was destroyed over time, possibly by fire or looting.
The second part of the museum was a big open land where some of the ruins still stand. I can’t believe they allow you to walk into the ruins and touch them. We didn’t spend that much time here because it started pouring.
Palaistra: This was part of an ancient gym, and helped to train some of the wrestlers and other athletes.
Philippeion: was erected by Philip II, King of Macedonia after the victory of Chaeroneia in 338 BCE. Originally there were 18 Ionic columns and inside were gold and ivory statues of Philip's family.

Ancient Olympia Site Tour
December 17, 2018 - We were surprised to find ourselves with an opportunity to visit Olympia Greece, the location of the ancient Olympic games. The site was expansive covering the training areas and buildings, temples to Zeus and Hera, and the stadium where the games were held.
The majority of the buildings and statues were in ruins and columns pieces littered the temple of Zeus. Before visiting the Archaeological Museum of Olympia, we walked the stadium area and saw where the fire for every modern Olympic game since 1936 was started. Artifacts inside the museum included many statues of the Greek gods, helmets, shields, vases, and other items used during the games.
We also learned about the organization and rules behind the games, such as you had to be a Greek in good standing, the participants performed in the nude, only men could participate, and the coveted prize was an olive branch. We enjoyed our visit to the site and will think fondly of it each time the modern Olympics occurs.
Greece's Peloponnese
Rick Steves' Europe Travel Guide | After enjoying Greece's charming old port town of Nafplio, we'll time-trip through the ruins of Olympia, take center stage at the remarkably preserved theater at Epidavros, and explore the ancient capital of Mycenae. Then we'll wander off the beaten path along the rustic, rough-and-tumble Mani Peninsula, relax in the idyllic beach town of Kardamyli, and marvel at Greece's Rock of Gibraltar: the fortress town of Monemvasia.

Greece - Land of Gods - Part II (Athens & Olympia)
So this was the second part of our Greek trip! Visiting the historic places of Olympia in Katakolon and Acropolis in Athens is quite amazing. Those places are very special and hold such an ancient history known by many people around the world! We were very excited and glad to have known them. Also made a short bus trip around the most important places in Athens. As well as with the other places, I wish we have had more time to watch more of them, but at least we got to see some things! There are also some scenes from Pireus where the cruise was.
PS: Sorry for the dirty lens on some shots, it's becoming one of the downsides of mirrorless cameras like the Sony A6000 that the sensor can easily pickup dust.
