Walking on Sofia's street in Helsinki heading towards the white cathedral
Read more about our Helsinki Free Walking Tour
Walking from Market Square to Senate Square towards the White Cathedral in Helsinki. Helsinki Free Walking Tour by Green Cap Tours starts from the base of the main staircase leading to the church.
All the buildings seen on the video are part of the neo-classical City Center, which was designed in 1800s by german Carl Ludwig Engel. Sofia's street connects the seaside Market Square with the governing centre of Senate Square. The City blocks between these to Squares are the oldest in Helsinki dating back to 1700s. These older city blocks and named after animals. The block on the left (light yellow) is a Rhino and the one on the right (dark yellow) is a Lion.
Nowadays Sofia's street has many restaurants, bars and shops of design articles. The brewery restaurant Bryggeri is one of the stops of the Private Food & Beer tastings organized be Green Cap Tours.
Fun fact for movie buffs: Sofias street (Sofiankatu 4) plays a major part in Aki Kaurismäki's film from 1983 Crime and Punishment. Those days the building was housed the central police station of Helsinki.

We only had one day in Helsinki so we decided to join the free walking tour with Green Cap tours. Our guide Eric was great and we learned a lot about Finland and the culture. Together with the cities of Espoo, Vantaa, and Kauniainen, and surrounding commuter towns, Helsinki forms the Greater Helsinki metropolitan area, which has a population of nearly 1.5 million. Often considered to be Finland's only metropolis, it is the world's northernmost metro area with over one million people as well as the northernmost capital of an EU member state. After Stockholm and Oslo, Helsinki is the third largest municipality in the Nordic countries. The city is served by the international Helsinki Airport, located in the neighboring city of Vantaa, with frequent service to many destinations in Europe and Asia.
Helsinki Walking Tour
Your coach will take you from the pier to start your walking tour from Senate Square, with its neo-classical atmosphere. It is surrounded by the Main Lutheran Church, the Senate Building, and the University. Walk by the central railway station of Eliel Saarinen and see the National Theater and Sanoma Talo. Enjoy a flavorful cup of fresh coffee and pastry served in one of the many coffee venues in downtown. Continue your tour by walking to Mannerheim Street, Helsinki's main thoroughfare where you'll see Helsinki's museum of Contemporary Art, National Museum, the new Music Hall and the House of Parliament. Then, visit the world famous Rock Church built of bedrock and quarried stone. Continue your walk towards Sibelius Park, in which the name was given to the park honoring Finland's greatest composer, Jean Sibelius. Note: Guests must be in good physical conditions to walk approximately 4 miles uneven and cobblestone surfaces. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Order of sights may vary.
