Baumgartner's in Monroe - donating a dollar to the ceiling
Along Highways 11, 59, 69 and 81, you'll find beautiful Monroe, known as Swisstown. The town square features the Green County Courthouse and, across the street, a great bar, restaurant and cheese shop known as Baumgartner's. One stop in there will not only yield great sandwiches, but also a lesson in how cool donating a dollar can be.

Around the Corner with John McGivern | Program | Manitowoc (#711)
[Latest Airdate: July 5, 2018]
[Original Airdate: March 8, 2018]
Manitowoc is a city on the eastern shore of Wisconsin, north of Sheboygan and south of Green Bay that John McGivern LOVES! No, we mean it.
Visits to the Wisconsin Maritime Museum and exploration of the SS Badger were the beginning of his enchantment. Then he was introduced to beach glass, reminisced with an Evergleam Christmas tree collector, and explored Jagemann Stamping and Briess Malt and Ingredients Co. He had a Diet Coke with Kathie at the Stage Door Pub, made a belt at Leatherwerks and checked in to Dead by Dawn --- not sure that he would ever check out! But the cherry on the top was provided by Beerntsen's Confectionary and Cedar Crest Ice Cream! Yum! What's not to love?
Fair warning to those in Manitowoc: Don't be surprised if some day there's a Manitowoc mailbox with John's name on it. By being so inviting, you asked for it, Manitowoc!

[Latest Airdate: August 24, 2017]
[Original Airdate: January 15, 2015]
In Green County they say, “cheese is life!” And there is a lot of Swiss (cheese, people and cows!), but for you shoppers, there’s more for sale than just cheese. Need a robot, or a drive-in movie ticket, or some homemade soap, or how about some of the best food we’ve ever tasted?
For you animal lovers, Monroe offers more than cows. We found prehistoric sheep (for real!) and purple martins (we know – not an animal, a bird). And for those of you looking for a new hobby, you’ll be inspired by the mystery writer who doubles as the mayor, the town clown and more than 100 accordion players who accompany the Monroe City Band.
Without a doubt, Monroe has the best court house we’ve seen and the best yodeler we’ve ever heard, and the best Limburger John’s ever tasted (OK, it was his one and only taste, but he might eat more someday). No doubt: Monroe is a town that can stimulate all the senses!

St Louis' Old Court House
It rose up on land that had once been the city's common fields and it began as a much smaller structure in 1826.
But, the city was growing so rapidly that by the late 1830's a new building was built and that's the one we call the old courthouse.
I find the old courthouse really interesting because in the midst of the conversations that go on about the merger of city and county, when you look at the old courthouse the other thing it symbolizes is when the city and county were merged because the old courthouse also held the offices of St. Louis County. said Dr. Robert Archibald
It was also the site of slave auctions. It was also the site of the famous slavery trial known as the Dred Scott case.
The local jewel it hasn't always shined soot discolored it for many years. It was even abandoned for a time starting in 1930. That was before the national parks service made it the headquarters for the Jefferson National Expansion memorial better known as the Arch.
Architect William Rumbold designed the dome at the old state hospital on Arsenal and the old courthouse. He based his design on St. Peters basilica in Vatican City.
