Words on War
Boroughbridge High School, Hackforth & Hornby and Barton Church of England primary schools worked on the Words on War project between February and June 2014, creating new prose, drama and song to mark the hundredth anniversary of the start of the First World War. This slideshow tells their Words on War story and features the original song created during the Richmond Cultural Education Partnership project.
The Green Howards, The 19th Regiment on crowd control at Muncaster Castle
The 19th Regiment-The Green Howards are an independent group of re-enactors, and their impression is that of an Army Battalion Company of Her Majesty's 19th Regiment of Foot (1st Yorks. North Riding) a.k.a. Green Howards, during the Crimean War period 1854-56.
They also used their Royal Enfield Rifles to great effect in 2015 on crowd control duties at Muncaster Castle and have no fear of pesky tourists who sometimes get in their way and you don't mess around with the Penningtons of Muncaster. Visitor beware! You should see what they do to anybody who drops litter. No wonder they have ghosts in the Castle.
Talking of ghosts, Muncaster had its famous fool. Tom Fool is credited with the murder of a local joiner who had this head cut off by Tom, with his own hammer and chisel. Strangely Tom was never prosecuted or dismissed from his duties, even though everybody knows he was a murderer. Trust me, they even have the story on their castle tour. Tom also directed any travelers who he did not like across the treacherous sands to their death. So come Halloween, children beware, a headless ghost is often seen in the dark and the wet person behind you is a lost soul.

ALMA DAY CENTENARY - GREEN HOWARDS - SOUND
The 1st Battalion, the Green Howards present Arms in a general Salute on the arrival of Major General Robinson, Colonel of the Regiment. This Parade was taking place in Minden in Germany, to commemorate the Hundredth Anniversary of the Battle of Alma, in which the Regiment played so great a part. Many old comrades were there to watch the ceremony, besides the National Servicemen who are at present serving with the Green Howards. Regimental Sergeant-Major Rayner now hands the Regimental Colour to the Ensign, Lieutenant Johnson for the Trooping Ceremony. This Alma Centenary marks the first great Battle of the Crimea. The Regiment, known as the 19th of Foot, were given the task of crossing the river to lead the attack against the main enemy position. Despite fierce counter attacks, they stood firm until the supporting Regiments came up and the enemy were routed.

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone.

The Green Howards (Alexandra, Princess of Wales's Own Yorkshire Regiment), frequently known as the Yorkshire Regiment until the 1920s, was a line infantry regiment of the British Army, in the King's Division. Carters Steam Fair
Carters Steam Fair began in 1977 when John and Anna Carter first bought the Steam Gallopers that Carters Steam Fair runs to this day. Before then, they had run a business promoting vintage car shows, steam rallies, wartime events and collectors' bazaars throughout the south of England, and they had often hired vintage attractions from other people to entertain the public. They also had a large personal collection of interesting things, from 78s to slot machines, and had an interest in vintage vehicles and equipment.

German Prisoners of War in Richmond Barracks Templemore 1914 1915 by John Reynolds
Templemore is well known as the location of the Garda College, which has been the national training faculty for the Garda Síochána na hÉireann since 1964. The complex has a long and interesting history as a military barracks, having opened in 1813 as Richmond Barracks. One of the most interesting periods in the history of the barracks occurred between August 1914 and March 1915 when over 2,300 German Prisoners of War and civilian internees were detained in Richmond. The POWs were moved to England in 1915, the reason given that the barracks was now required to train Irish recruits joining the British army. The real reason for their swift removal however was far more intriguing and this story, along with other fascinating details will be outlined in this lecture.
John Reynolds is a Garda Sergeant based at the Garda Síochána College in Templemore, and established the Garda College Museum in 2002. He is finalising a PhD at the University of Limerick on the subject of the IRA campaign against the RIC in Tipperary, 1919-22.
