Riding the Hokkaido Shinkanen - Hayabusa Green Car from Tokyo to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto
A video review of my recent ride on the Hokkaido Shinkansen Hayabusa service from Tokyo to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto on Hokkaido island. I travelled in the Green Car of the Shinkansen E5 series train and it was a fantastic experience.
The entire journey of 862.5 kilometres was covered in 4hr 14 min with an average speed of nearly 204 km/hr!

Hokkaido! On Japan's north island is the city of Hakodate and here you will get the best seafood in Japan.
That's right - the fish caught here eventually goes to Tsukiji so it's freshest from the origin.
Today's breakfast was KAISENDON 海鮮丼 from ABUYA (油矢) in the Hakodate Morning Market near the JR Hakodate Station.

Goryōkaku (五稜郭) is a star fort in the Japanese city of Hakodate on the island of Hokkaido. It was the main fortress of the short-lived Republic of Ezo.
Hakodate (函館市 Hakodate-shi) is a city and port located in Oshima Subprefecture, Hokkaido, Japan. It is the capital city of Oshima Subprefecture.
As of July 31, 2011, the city has an estimated population of 279,851 with 143,221 households, and a population density of 412.83 persons per km2 (1,069.2 persons per sq. mi.). The total area is 677.77 km2 (261.69 sq mi). The city is now the third biggest in Hokkaido after Sapporo and Asahikawa.

JR Hakodate Station is the main gateway for the Hakodate City in the Hokkaido Region.
This station gained more importance since the Seikan Under Sea tunnel opened between the main Japanese Island of Honshu and Hokkaido. Now there are train services from Aomori side to the Hokkaido Region often, improving the transportation to the Hokkaido Region.
Currently there is no bullet train service to Hakodate from the main Island (as of 2014) but plans are underway to extend the Tohoku Shinkansen first to Hakodate and then eventually to Sopporo. This new Shinkansen line will be called Hokkaido Shinkansen.
The Seikan Tunnel connecting Honshu and Hokkaido under the Tsugaru Strait is the longest and the deepest operational rail tunnel in the world.

函館西部地区、新島襄の海外渡航地碑の向かいにある人工島。函館港の整備で発生した浚渫土砂で造られた埋立地で、五角形を成した出島式になっています。全部で７０万立方メートルの土砂が投入され、周囲は1118メートル、面積は８万平方メートルあります。
陸地と緑の島を結ぶ｢新島橋｣は、映画｢星に願いを｣のロケ地にもなった場所。周囲の散策路からは、函館山や西部地区の街並み、赤レンガ倉庫、摩周丸、函館どつくを見渡すことができ、晴れた日には遠くに駒ケ岳など、美しい山並みも望めるビュースポットです。
島の半分には芝生が敷き詰められ、サッカーの練習や凧揚げなどに利用されています。ベンチや東屋も設けられ、ジョギングをしたり、釣りを楽しんだり、ただ広々とした海を眺めたり、人それぞれに様々な楽しみ方ができる公園です。
毎年8月の函館港まつりの開幕を飾る花火はここから打ち上げられ、周辺には多くの人が繰り出します。2009年には、函館開港150周年を記念するイベントのメイン会場となりました。
冬期は閉門時間が17時となりますが、12月は20時に延長。ベイエリアのクリスマスファンタジーのツリーが対岸に見えて、美しいイルミネーションを楽しむことができます。ただし、花火の打ち上げ会場になるため、15時～18時すぎはいったん立ち入り禁止に。クリスマスファンタジーの夜景を楽しむなら、花火のあとにどうぞ。
The Seikan Tunnel in Japan Japanology 青函トンネル 青函隧道
The Seikan Tunnel (青函トンネル Seikan Tonneru, or 青函隧道 Seikan Zuidō) is a 53.85 km (33.46 mi) dual gauge railway tunnel in Japan, with a 23.3 km (14.5 mi) long portion under the seabed. The track level is about 100 metres (330 ft) below the seabed and 240 m (790 ft) below sea level. It extends beneath the Tsugaru Strait—connecting Aomori Prefecture on the main Japanese island of Honshu with the northern island of Hokkaido—as part of the standard gauge Hokkaido Shinkansen and the narrow gauge Kaikyo Line portion of the Hokkaido Railway Company (JR Hokkaido)'s Tsugaru-Kaikyō Line. The name Seikan comes from combining the on'yomi readings of the first characters of Aomori (青森), the nearest major city on the Honshu side of the strait, and Hakodate (函館), the nearest major city on the Hokkaido side.
The Seikan Tunnel is the world's longest tunnel with an undersea segment (The Channel tunnel, while shorter, has a longer undersea segment). It is also the second deepest and the second longest main-line railway tunnel after the Gotthard Base Tunnel in Switzerland opened in 2016.

函館西部地区の町並み（はこだてせいぶちくのまちなみ）は、北海道函館市にある北海道遺産に選定されている町並みである。函館市街西部に位置する函館山麓の地区は、函館市の発祥の地とされているが、一般的に西部地区の町並みという呼び方は、元町、末広町、大町、豊川町および弥生町の各一部にあたる重要伝統的建造物群保存地区をさす。函館の代表的な観光地となっています。
西部地区の町並みと呼ばれる伝統的建造物群保存地区は、函館山と函館港に囲まれ、この地区がもっとも繁栄していた明治末期から昭和初期にかけての洋風・和風・和洋折衷の建物が多く残る地域である。これらが、函館山から函館港に向かう坂道や路面電車が走る街路とと調和して特色のある町並みを形成している。元町、末広町を中心とした14.5ヘクタールが「函館市元町末広町伝統的建造物群保存地区」の名称で、国の重要伝統的建造物群保存地区として選定されており、北海道遺産にも選定されています。
保存地区は、大まかに二つのゾーンを形成し、一つは、主に山麓の傾斜地に広がる元町を中心とする地区で、函館ハリストス正教会復活聖堂、カトリック元町教会、旧函館区公会堂や元町公園など、行政・文化の中心地としての歴史性や、各宗派の教会など外国文化の影響を受けた、異国情緒豊かな公共施設の建物や宗教的建造物が建ち並ぶ、函館を代表する景観を醸し出しています。
もう一つは、函館港沿いの旧金森倉庫を中心とする地区で、赤煉瓦の倉庫や和洋折衷の海産商の旧宅が立ち並び、港町のにぎわいを今に残しています。

GWも残り２日！ 今回は函館市は緑の島に行ってきました。
動画内では思いっきり「夢の島」と間違っていますが、正しくは
「緑の島」です・・・間違ってゴメンネ！
緑の島は函館出身のバンド「GLAY」がライブを行ったことで、
全国各地のGLAYファンにとってはまさに聖地ですが、市内の他の観光エリアに比べて、ちょっと地味な感じがします。
しかし、広々とした広場や、美しい景色があり、地元の方の憩いの場として利用されています。

Thanks so much for watching! These past couple days have been short day trips out of Kyoto (Nara and Miyajima) and then traveling to Hiroshima and Hakodate.
Many of the things we did were kind of touristy take pictures and then move on kind of visits. One thing I've noticed while on this trip is that the historical signage isn't very good. Ginkakuji (the gold-leaf temple) for example was apparently burned down and rebuilt and has an interesting story as to why it's covered in gold-leaf, but none of that history is mentioned.
Hiroshima Peace Memorial Boulevard and Museum was very moving, educational and heartbreaking and was an exception to the signage bit. Everything was translated and extensive. There were a lot of first hand experiences of people there, photographs (taken by people you just know experienced the long term effects of radiation) of victims, first responders and scientists. One thing that I recall as interested was that the preservation of the A Bomb Dome was slightly contentious. Some did not want to have reminders of the city's devastation. Ultimately the city council voted unanimously to preserve it for the sake of the global community.

Hakodate is an active fishing port and famous for a pretty wide variety of food, one of which is squid. The Morning Market had these large tanks with squid where you could pay to catch a squid and the chef would cut it up for you immediately. It was cool but kinda sad watching people catch squid, knowing the unlucky winner would be eaten immediately after. Lots more coming about Hakodate! Our guide was super informative and Hakodate had a surprisingly interesting history that I wasn't aware of.

Super Hokuto - Sapporo to Shin-Hakodate
