Taiwan Day 975: Taitung (台東) - Green Island (綠島) - Little Great Wall
Lyudao Green Island: Little Great Wall
Green Island, also known by other names, is a small volcanic island in the Pacific Ocean about 33 km (21 mi) off the eastern coast of Taiwan. It is 15.092 km2 (5.83 sq mi) at high tide and 17.329 km2 (6.69 sq mi) at low tide, making it the Republic of China's seventh-largest island. The island is administered as Lyudao Township[1][2], a rural township of Taitung County and one of the county's two offshore areas (the other being Orchid Island). The island once served as a penal colony for political prisoners during Taiwan's period of martial law, although today it is primarily known as a tourist hotspot.
Green Island,The evergreen journey of Taiwan.
Last week I have been to Green Island on the east coast of Taiwan. Thanks to invitation from Tourism Bureau of Taiwan. It's my great pleasure to join this trip together with Yorko Summer - Keep Diving Keep Breathing , Tim Ho , Jerome Kim , 周杞楠 (Nan Wang) & 步谊(Bubu). We have a great week in Green island and thanks for warm welcome from all Taiwanese trip during our journey.
It's my first time in Taiwan and I've heard about Green island so many years ago. Finally I've got a chance to dive in here.Just only 4 days diving and we experienced the very clear and warm water of summer in Green island that make every dive is pleasant dive. Some divesite that quite unique here like
-Big Mushroom,The 1,200 years old of gian Porites Coral head 11m. long and 31 m. circumference. One of the biggest coral head I ever see.
-Artificial Reefs by Iron,Very friendly Batfish and you can wander into the grid structure that cover with Soft coral ,Seafan and school of Goatfish.
-The Church,The massive underwater canyon that have such an amaizng dramatic lighting show.
-Skyline,Beautiful seamount with nice Swimthrough and beautiful Seafan decorating with tons of orange Anthias.
-Angel Wall,Great divesite for macro dive.Lots of Pontohi and Severn's Pygmy seahorse.I never thouunght that it's common to see this species of Pygmy seahorse in Taiwan's sea.Normally I could find it in Raja Ampat,Indonesia.
-We've got a chance to see very special Coleman's Pygmy seahorse.I've heard about this before about they found this species in here but I thought maybe people confused with Pontohi Pygmy Seahorse. When they show me Coleman's Pygmy seahorse,I can see that this pygmy really different from Pontohi's Pygmy Seahorse. The guide told me you can find 4 kinds of Pygmy seahorse here.
Lots of interesting nudibranch in night dive here.Too bad that we have just a short time to explore here.I hope this video that I captured from 4 days of diving here can show you the beauty of Green island,Taiwan.
Above the surface,Green island is a lovely small island. In summer,The weather is so nice here and we can ride the scooter around this island in one hour or so.I can feel a great hospitality of people here.Taiwanwse are very kind and lovely people. Thanks to all the staffs that taking care of me so good.Taking me around the island to film this beautiful island and we're glad that we can share our work to local communities and media to inspired people to keep developing tourism in this island.I wish you have a chance to visit and dive in Green island ,Taiwan.

[台韓情侶 국제커플 대만여행 #9] 只靠腳踏車環綠島5小時的男子漢(?) Vlog!

Thanks for asking. We are a small publishing company (Vision) based in Taipei. We produce an English magazine (Travel in Taiwan) introducing you to Taiwan as a travel destination. Read it! Lot of useful information. We also have a website with lots of articles about Taiwan. Visit it! We try to make a video or two every week.

This video is about the hot-spring town of Guanziling in southern Taiwan. I tried to include as much helpful info as possible, so it's a bit long. The image quality of the screen recording is not as good as expected, I shouldn't move the cursor so much, I shouldn't hit so hard on the mouse, I should write a script... I know! :) Lots of things to learn. Anyway, hope you find this video helpful. Let us know what you think, good or bad. Here are the links of the websites I opened in the video:

DaAiTV_DaAiHeadlines_20110609_Holiday resort built on sand.wmv
One good place to start practicing environmental conservation is the east coast of Taiwan. Residents will know that along the shoreline, all over the island, you can see construction projects going ahead, all the time. Whether repairing the sea walls, protecting the coastal roads, or developing tourism, these projects inevitably change the shape of the shoreline, and alter the natural ecological balance. But amazingly, Taiwan's 1,000 or more kilometers of coast, does not come under a specific law or set of regulations, and is not administered by a specialist government department. Taiwan's proposed Coastal Law has been in the pipeline for 20 years. Conservationists say, the legal loophole is the reason a controversial hotel was built on top of a beautiful sandy beach in Taitung County. In our continuing series of reports, on coastal erosion in Taiwan, we go to investigate.
Off-shore wave breakers
One huge concrete wave breaker after another forms this wall of defense out to sea.
WRA 9th River Bureau dept. head, Xu Zhiguo
From north to south there are around 8 like this, and another 8 in Huaren.
The huge off-shore sea wall just about defends a small sandy bay, here on the east coast of Taiwan.
WRA 9th River Bureau director, Chen Chonglong
On the northeast coast, basically our sand moves from north to south with the north-to-south coastal current, but in this place, the geography is different. Here the coastal current goes in the opposite direction: it comes from the mouth of the Hualien River and flows up.
Making a mark on the east coast
In addition to the man-made beach defenses, there are plans to build an artificial pleasure pool here. There are construction projects all along Taiwan's east coast - some to repair the shoreline, others to protect the coastal highway, or develop tourism; but the most controversial is the Meiliwan beach hotel, in Shanyuan, Taitung.
Shanyuan Conservation Assoc. chairperson, Chen Shiyue
The original area was less than a hectare. Developments that cover less than one hectare are exempt from an environmental impact assessment. To put it bluntly, they avoid assessment.
Meiliwan hotel resort spoils the beach
By a coconut grove, on the beach which is earmarked for development, the main building is finished, but the excavators parked beside have half finished their job.
Taitung Uni. Community Education Dept., Assoc. Prof. Liao Qiue
Currently we can see they are already digging the sand. We think this is very serious, because the large building on the beach has already irreversibly harmed the environment.
Academia Sinica Biodiversity Center researcher, Liao Mingxiu
Any project, including a holiday resort or ocean facilities, must be far from the beach and seawater, but also high up, where tsunamis or tidal waves can't reach.
Precedent for beach development?
The completed hotel poses a dilemma. If the resort does not open, un-demolished, it will be a security risk; but if it does open, there are legal issues.
Taitung scuba diving operator, Wang Zhifeng
If this is made legal, it will be the first in Taiwan. In the future, in other places, it's not impossible that this case will set a precedent.
Conservationists are shocked that such a large building was allowed to be built on the coast.
Wilderness Association Hualien director, Xiong Fansheng
To develop tourism, there has to be a certain amount of development. The problem is, this kind of development, has to be long-term and sustainable.
Coastal Law yet to be passed
So what is the standard for sustainable beach development? As long as 20 years ago, in 1991, a draft Costal Law was sent to Taiwan's legislature, but the bill has yet to be passed.
NTNU Dept. of Geography, Pro. Lin Xuemei
It's not clear who is responsible. Unless the government is reorganized, and a cabinet department formed, only then can Coastal Law be implemented.
Academia Sinica Biodiversity Center researcher, Liao Mingxiu
Costal Law is very important. Both our national territory on land and at sea has to come under a complete policy, so that operators know how to develop it.
All washed up?
If unregulated and unrestricted projects continue to destroy Taiwan's coast, perhaps one day, we will no longer be able to go to the beach, and enjoy the seaside in harmony with nature.

Travel in Taiwan May/June, 2016:
Xiaoyeliu was our first stop inside the East Coast National Scenic Area (eastcoast-nsa.gov.tw), which stretches from just north of Taitung City to just south of Hualien City. Beyond its sheer beauty, this natural stone-sculpture scenic area is highly info-taining for those types – like your writer – thrilled with matters geology-related. Along the shore you’ll find large rock formations – honeycomb rock, mushroom rock, tofu rock, cuestas – and in the visitor center well-crafted models and rock samples introducing the geological features of Xiaoyeliu and the coastal mountains.
A short distance north is Jialulan. This is a seaside art park – and an eco-engineering showcase, on a transformed waste-soil site created during construction of the adjoining air-force base – with works spread out over an expansive grassland. Most are of wood, and most of the wood is of coastline-gathered driftwood, a popular Taitung-artist medium. My favorite installation features a wood-weave shell stuffed full with the human-created detritus that washes ashore in monster storms – things you’d expect, like fishing gear, but also much that’s bizarre. A stethoscope? A calculator?
Another short drive north brings you to small Jiamuzi Bay, at the foot of Mt. Dulan. This is a place of stunning archetypal tropical scenery – the mountain sloping right down to the coast, coconut trees along the shore, attractive coral reefs just offshore, disappearing under frothy waves and then popping up again. This is a popular spot for surfing, snorkeling, and other watersports.
The Water Running Upward attraction, a must-visit spot for the tour-bus crowd, is just south of Dulan village. And just what is it? A long, narrow, shallow irrigation channel comes down from the hills, running through a small sculpted park. And for all the world, it looks as though the gurgling waters defy gravity along this 100m stretch. Real or illusion? We inspected the waterworks from every angle; the stream, counter-intuitively, seems not to slow down or pool up at all. Take the riddle on for yourself with a first-hand gander. (Nevertheless, I give you the answer at article’s end.)
The sprawling, big-shouldered old Dulan Sugar Factory, in Dulan village, one of the coast’s largest Amis-tribe settlements, makes sugar no more. The heritage complex, now protected, is today a place for local and expat artists and craftsmen. There are artist workshops, a cultural-creative boutique, a café, a craft brewery, Taiwanese and Japanese restaurants, a quick-food kiosk, a driftwood stage, and other attractions. The big action is on Saturday nights, when there is free live music, with both local and expatriate talent performing.
On the slopes of Mt. Dulan just to Dulan’s northwest, on a road that leads to the popular Moonlight Inn café (see Stay/Eat/Buy article), is the Dulan Site. The short paths to the spread-out finds on view, which include a sarcophagus and large stones from a long wall used in worship rites, start at roadside and have clear signage. They are from what is called the Qilin culture, and date to about 3,000 years ago. It is believed that the local tribal inhabitants likely moved up here after the coast was hit by a tsunami. Mt. Dulan is revered as a divine presence by the area’s Amis and Bunun tribal groups.
36 green sea turtle hatchlings released from Taiwan proper
Thirty-six baby green sea turtles have been released into the wild, after hatching in Taitung on Taiwan proper. The green sea turtle is an endangered species known to lay eggs at Penghu and Orchid Island. The species tends to stay away from the busy beaches of Taiwan’s main island, but one made its way to a remote marine reserve in Taitung to nest. Conservationists kept watch over the eggs day and night and were rewarded two months later with a nest of healthy hatchlings. It’s this child’s first time seeing baby green turtles. He takes a quick video, capturing a memory before the hatchlings are released to the ocean. The baby turtles were placed on the sand. Conservationists cheered as the turtles rushed toward the sea.Chen Shih-yueConservationistAfter we saw that the green turtle had come ashore, we took turns every day watching over the beach in the afternoon and evenings. Tourists also come to this area so we were scared they might dig the eggs up.Back in August, a gravid turtle appeared at Taitung’s Fushan Fish Reserve and laid 90 eggs near a wind break on the beach. Volunteers watched over the eggs day and night. Two months later, 36 baby turtles hatched from the nest.Cheng I-JiunnNational Taiwan Ocean UniversityIt’s happened many times on the outlying islands, but it’s a first for Taiwan proper. It was very exciting news for the county government, for the fish reserve and the entire country. The conservation professor was all smiles as the baby turtles were released to the wild in hopes that they would grow and thrive.
