The Lalu Hotel - Architectural Masterpiece - Sun Moon Lake, Taiwan 日月潭涵碧樓酒店
The Lalu is a modern architectural masterpiece, an exercise in Zen, from its tranquil lotus ponds and bamboo fronds to the gleaming teak floors and the play of light streaking through slatted windows.
The Lalu is the first international 5-star hotel in Taiwan. It's located in the central region of Taiwan on the beautiful Sun Moon Lake.
The construction of a hydroelectric plant during the Japanese occupation filled the basin, deepening the lake from 20 feet to 60, and drastically shrinking the island of Lalu. The Shao people were moved to a village at the edge of the newly merged Sun Moon Lake, and the island remains to this day a site for Shao ancestor worship, off-limits to outsiders.
Both the Japanese royal family Emperor Hirohito nd the first president of Taiwan had summer palaces here, built on the site of the hotel.
Consequently, Japanese, Chinese and Western influences were used in the construction of this resort which dated originally from 1901.
It has long been a popular destination, owing to its breathtaking surroundings, it was also once a getaway vacation home for Chiang Kai-Shek.
The hotel was extensively redesigned in 1998, modernized by the Australian architect Kerry Hill, and is a bold design statement, matching the dramatic beauty of the lake itself.
With an area of 21,088 square meters, the original Chinese palace-style building was renovated keeping only the original walls and floors, and two additional buildings were constructed, and the design for the 96 rooms, suites and villas was inspired by the indigenous construction style of stone slab houses. The concept behind the renovation was to combine the best of ancient and modern Taiwan.
The center piece of the design is an infinity pool running the length of the resort that seemingly flows right into the stretched-tarpaulin blue of the lake below. Surrounded by jade-green mountains, The Lalu offers a serene getaway. The suites have sweeping views of the lake, with its swirls of mist and the encircling mountains.
The hotel itself is constructed from Chinese cypress, and indigenous woods make up much of the interior of the suites and villas (the Lalu is an all-suite hotel). Each suite has a bedroom, a large living room, and a generous balcony with an unbroken view of the lake and the surrounding mountains. Though still retaining the intimate feeling of a secluded mountain lodge, the hotel is a modern one, with central air, internet, satellite TV, and a Bose stereo system standard to each suite.
In deference to its presidential heritage, a small museum is annexed to the hotel, dedicated to the memory of the first president of Taiwan, Chiang Kai Shek. The architectural concept integrated the modern and the vernacular by applying contemporary techniques and methodology to local materials and craftsmanship.

Environmentally friendly resort in Nantou powered by solar panels and wind turbines
One bed and breakfast in Yuchih Township, Nantou County, has recently attracted attention for its environmentally-friendly practices and facilities. The owner of the B&B spent 17 years building and tweaking the resort to attain low-carbon certification. The result showcases the value of going green. This green bed and breakfast in Nantou gets its power from solar panels and wind turbines. An ecological pond on its grounds also helps purify the wastewater it generates.Fan Huai-jenResort OwnerIn the midst of climate change and serious environment degradation, I wanted to personally take the initiative in demonstrating how to better take care of our surroundings. Fan Huai-jen spent 17 years planning and building this green resort which has been environmentally certified by the Low Carbon Building Alliance (LCBA). Fan hopes that his work will serve as proof that going green in the hospitality business does not have to come at the expense of comfort. In addition to having a low carbon footprint, the green resort also boasts dishes made from fresh ingredients sourced from local farmers and provides its guests DIY classes on how to make dyes from fallen leaves.

Sunmoonlake Nantou Taiwan ❤️????
Sun Moon Lake is the largest lake in Taiwan, and is comprised of the diamond-shaped Sun Lake and curved Moon Lake. The Thao people call it zintun which may have been the earliest name given to Sun Moon Lake. The earliest record of the name Sun Moon Lake was in the article, “Travels to Shueilishe, written by Deng Chuan-an in 1821, which said, I have no idea where the water comes from. It is about 10 li (half a kilometer) in length, and a third of that in width. The water is red and green, so it is named Sun Moon Lake. After the Han people came to reclaim the Shuishalian land, Sun Moon Lake was given more names, such as Shuishe Large Lake, Shuili Lake, Shuilishe Lake, Shuishehaizih, Bamboo Lake, Dragon Lake and so on. In the late Cing Dynasty, the western missionaries came to Sun Moon Lake to share their faith with the Thao people. They named Sun Moon Lake “Dragon Lake”, “Lake Candidius”, “Nin-Isivatan Lake”, etc.
The island on Sun Moon Lake was the ancient settlement of the Thao people. They consider it to be the home of Pashala, their highest-ranking ancestral spirit. The island is called “Lalu Island” in the Thao language. During the Cing Dynasty, it was called Pearl Islet, Pearl Hill, etc. There is a saying that Cinglong (Green Dragon) Mountain (Kunbariz Mountain in the Thao language) and Lunlong (Mountain Dragon) Mountain (Titabu in the Thao Language) are facing to each other with Lalu Island in the middle; it creates the image of two dragons playing with a pearl, so it was called Pearl Island. During the Cing Dynasty, Westerners called it Pearl Island. In the Japanese occupation period, it was called Jade Island and “Island in the Water”. After the restoration from the Japanese, it was called Guanghua Island.
After the 921 Earthquake of 1999, the Nantou County Government changed its name to Lalu Island out of respect for the Thao tribe.
The SML Scenic Area, encompassing some 9,000 hectares, is situated astride the geographic center of Taiwan in Nantou County. The town of Yuchi lies to the immediate north, Shuishe Mountain to the east, and Provincial Highway 21 and Shueili Township to the south. In addition to original provincial scenic area land, the SML National Scenic Area today also includes within its administrative area the Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village, the communities of Toushe and Checheng, Shuishe and Jiji Mountains, and the Shueili River.
Mountains in the Scenic Area rise from between 600 and 2,000 meters. From the highest ridges in the eastern section, the landscape gradually turns to rippling foothills and then to fast-flowing rivers and sweeping, verdant flatlands in the west. The latter, geographically a part of the Puli Basin, is the only section to preserve an alpine lake.
The central location of Sun Moon Lake also means that the bountiful tourism opportunities available in Nantou County are only a short drive away. The area draws tourists from all over the country and its unique attractions are increasingly a magnet for international visitors.
