Description
The Sculpture of David Smith (1906-1965), Part 1
David Gariff, senior lecturer, National Gallery of Art.
David Smith (1906–1965) is arguably America’s greatest sculptor of the 20th century. His art enlarged the vocabulary of sculpture by employing welding and industrial processes and materials, laying the groundwork for the directness of minimalism and the realization that sculpture could be anything the artist desired. Smith’s oeuvre is a logical outgrowth of earlier 20th-century sculptural trends in cubism, constructivism, and surrealism. However, his work also represents a new paradigm for the language of modern sculpture that reflects the dynamic growth and industrial prowess of the United States after the Second World War. Smith’s confrontation with the process of creation broke the rules and expanded the possibilities of his art form. In part one of this lecture, presented at the National Gallery of Art on March 7, 2019, senior lecturer David Gariff explores Smith’s revolutionary art through a discussion of some of his most important and innovative works, including the Agricola, Tanktotem, Sentinel, Zig, Voltri, and Cubi series.

Bed And Breakfast in Woodstock VT, The Ardmore
The building that is now The Ardmore was originally built in 1867 by a Woodstock businessman named Oscar Freeman as his home. Mr. Freeman passed away in 1912 and the home was sold to and then transferred a number of times between members of the Gillingham family, who originally owned F. H. Gillingham & Sons General Store, the oldest general store in Vermont. The home was purchased in 1994 by Father William P. Gallagher, the priest at Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church in Woodstock. He immediately transferred ownership of the property to the Tully Family Trust. The home was then renovated and began operating as The Ardmore in the fall of 1994. The name Ardmore means ‘Great Height’ in Celtic and, since Father Gallagher was the first generation son of Irish immigrants, all the rooms were given names associated with Father Gallagher’s family.
Today The Ardmore is owned and operated by Charlotte and Cary Hollingsworth, flatlanders transplanted from Southern California. Charlotte previously managed an independent bookstore in Montrose, California and Cary is a retired biology teacher. We decided that we wanted to live where the seasons change, where the pace of life is a bit slower and where the fall foliage is magnificent. In January of 2003 we found Woodstock and The Ardmore and began our new life as Innkeepers on July 1, 2003.

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone.

Vermont Translines US 4 Vanpool (westbound): Interstate 91, VT - Exit 11 to Interstate 89 - Exit 1
Vermont Translines is an intercity bus company founded by its parent company, Premier Coach, in 2013. The bus company mainly serves the US Route 7 and US Route 4 corridors in the New England state of Vermont. Aided by $400,000 in annual federal grant money disbursed by the Vermont Agency of Transportation, the company also utilizes Greyhound's ticketing system and connects with other Greyhound bus routes, primarily in Burlington, Albany and White River Junction. Service on two routes between Burlington, Vermont and Albany, New York and between Rutland, Vermont and Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire officially began June 9, 2014, with intermediate stops at towns and cities between. The restart of intercity bus service for places like Rutland marked the first time some places along the current routes had seen any intercity bus service at all since Greyhound left Rutland in 2008, and in towns like Bennington since 2005.
Note: Due to low ridership on their US 4 bus route, the 56-seat Setra coach bus previously used for this route was replaced with an 11-seat Chrysler vanpool type vehicle sometime either late in 2015 or early in 2016. It's actually still a very comfortable ride.
