8 Market | Wellington | Coonoor | Tamil Nadu

What's 8 Market?
On the second sunday of every month, between 8am and 8pm, sleepy little Coonoor in Tamil Nadu, comes alive with this monthly street market.
. . .
So why am I this thrilled about a village market? To be honest, that's mostly because nothing much happens in this tiny town and 8 Market is an event to look forward to. However, and more importantly, it's like going on a treasure hunt. You can find amazing things at throwaway prices.
. . .
So what are the things that make 8 Market such a treasure hunt? It's the export surpluses from the ancient town of Karur which is now a major home textile export hub in Tamil Nadu with a turnover of over US$300 million per year. It caters to brands such as Walmart, Target, IKEA, JC Penny and many more. Thankfully, at the 8 Market, curtains with big eyelets come for Rs 100-150 and sheer ones for just Rs 50. There are piles of fabulous linen, some are embroidered and crocheted, all gorgeously designed. Tablecloths, bed linen, cushion covers, curtains, towels, mats, runners, pillows and pretty items to tempt a shopaholic.
. . .
In another section of the market there is stuff from Tirupur, a town known for its hosiery and knitwear exports. They bring garments from the export surplus market, with branded items priced between Rs 50 and Rs 70. It is cheaper than even Sarojini Market in Delhi.
Oh! what fun to dig though those piles for the most amazing finds from some of the world's largest retailers such as Walmart, Primark, Switcher, Polo Ralph Lauren, Diesel, Tommy Hilfiger, M&S, FILA, H&M, Reebok, Next, Gap and so on.
In invigorating climes of the Nilgiris, you can shop and shop but not drop - which I certainly did.

Ooty, India - Tea & Chocolate factory
Nilgiri tea is generally described as being a dark, intensely aromatic, fragrant and flavoured tea grown in the southern portion of the Western Ghats mountains of Southern India. It is grown in the hills of the Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu, though there are numerous other tea-growing districts in South India as well, including Munnar and Central Travancore, further south in Kerala state.
Nilgiri tea plantations are represented by the Nilgiri Planters' Association, which is an organizational member of the United Planters Association of South India (UPASI), headquartered in Coonoor. UPASI is the peak body representing plantation owners in South India. However, plantations only account for around 30% of tea production in Nilgiri District. The vast majority of production is undertaken by small growers, who typically own less than one hectare each.[1] The majority of Nilgiri tea small growers are the Badagas, a local community of agriculturists.[2]
Tea plantations in Nilgiri District (as in other growing districts of India) typically own and operate their own processing factories. Small growers sell their tea as green leaf to bought leaf factories, which are independently owned. (Although in recent years, some plantation factories have started buying green leaf from small growers)[3] After processing (which converts the green leaf into 'made tea'), most is sold through regularly scheduled auctions in Coonoor, Coimbatore and Kochi. More than 50% of Nilgiri tea is exported, and usually finds its way into blends used for tea bags. Data is unreliable on the precise proportion of Nilgiri tea that is actually exported. However, Neilson and Pritchard (op cit) suggest that at least 70% of South Indian tea is exported, and the Nilgiris constitutes more than half of all South Indian production.

Ooty, short for Ootacamund (an anglicized name for Udhakamandala), is a popular hill resort in the state of Tamil Nadu in Southern India.
The name Udhakamandala is derived from the TODA word othakal-mund which means house in mountains. Udhaka Mandala also means Water Abode in Sanskrit. Ooty stands at 7,347 feet above sea level in the Nilgiri mountain range. It served as the summer headquarters of the Madras Presidency.

Kotagiri, Ooty Coonoor Tamil Nadu, India-A offbeat Honeymoon - Tripjodi Indian Couple Travel video
Kotagiri famous for scenic viewpoints, beautiful tea gardens. We went to Catherine waterfalls, dolphins nose, kodanadu view point, uyiletti waterfalls, sims park, nehru park, tiger hill cemetery and lot more in Kotagiri and its surroundings . .
Trip Jodi had an amazing stay and exploration at Kotagiri through #stayonskiil.
It was really mesmerising vacation at Kotagiri. We stayed at Darpan Wood house.
Kotagiri is the oldest and the third largest hill stations in the Nilgiris. Looming over and above all the surrounding hills in the North-eastern escarpments, its climate is claimed to be one of the best in the World. Kotagiri literally means the lines of the house of the Kotas. Kotagiri is quietly tucked away in the Nilgiris and used to be the summer resort of the British.
Till date the beauty of hill resort of Kotagiri attracts tourists and the sun scorched souls from far and wide Kotagiri. Unlike Ooty and Coonoor, Kotagiri is situated in an 'open-terrace' massif. At an elevation of 1985 m. the town has developed around numerous knolls and valleys. The Kotagiri weather is more bracing than that of Coonoor and balmier than that of Ooty
At a distance of 29 km from Ooty, 20 km from Coonoor, 72 km from Coimbatore & 544 km from Chennai, Kotagiri is a small Hill Station in Nilgiris district of Tamilnadu and is one of the top places to visit in Ooty. It is situated at an altitude of 1793 m Kotagiri. This the oldest and the third largest hill stations in the Nilgiris after Ooty and Coonoor. The name Kotagiri literally means mountains of the Kotas and refers to the Kota tribe who lived here in the past.
Kotagiri was the first British settlement in the Nilgiris and preferred summer retreat, till a road was built from Mettupalayam to Coonoor. The region was discovered by two civil servants of the Madras government in pursuit of outlaws. They called the region Kotacherry. John Sullivan, the then collector of Coimbatore, visited Kotagiri and was so drawn to the place that he built a home here making him the first European to reside in Kotagiri.
Kotagiri is famous for its breathtaking scenic beauty. The first coffee plantation was planted here in 1843 which was followed by many more plantations. However, the first tea plantation in the late 19th century by the daughter of MD Cockburn, tea slowly started taking over coffee until it completely spanned the city. Today, the tea plantations in Kotagiri cover a total area of 30,000 acres.
Surrounded by tea estates and beautiful green landscapes, Kotagiri offers plenty of opportunities for trekking and rock climbing. The trekking trails in this region go through picturesque tea-estates and lush greenery, meadows and rivers. The most popular trekking trails in Kotagiri are towards Kodanad (15 km), Catherine Falls (7.5 km) and Longwood Shola (3 km). Some of the tourist attractions in Kotagiri are Kodanad Viewpoint, Catherine Falls, Elk Falls (7 km) and Rangaswami Peak and Pillar. Kodanad Point offers spectacular views of the surrounding hills and valleys.
Kotagiri has plenty of accommodation options in form of resorts, villas and lodges from economical to mid-range and highly luxurious hotels. Lazy Hills, La mansion, Moon Shadow Cottage, Bel Air Cottage are some of the many options.
Kotagiri is well connected by bus with Mettupalayam, Coimbatore, Trichy, Thirupur and Erode. Coonoor (20 km) is the nearest narrow-gauge railhead and Mettupalayam (33 km) is the nearest major railway station.

OOTY | COONOOR | TOP 20 PLACES | ENTRY FEES | FULL HD | TAMIL NADU | Wanderlust On Wheel
Hello YouTube
I took the regular route via Bandipura and to my surprise we spotted wild Leopard hunting on road side for the first time which is the best memory of mine till date. (Link:
Avoiding the 36 hair pin bends uphill drive of Kalahati Ghats I drove via Gudalur so I can cover few points on the way. There are many beautiful points in Ooty and you have to plan properly to cover these within stipulated time without much detouring. Here is my route plan for Ooty from Bangalore serial wise as follows:
1. Bandipur and Mudumallai: To witness wildlife at its peak. If you have time then you can go for Bandipur Jungel Safari.
2. Needle Rock View Point and Pine forest: I found this better than Doddabetta, clear view and fewer crowds. An entry fee of INR 5 per person. The location is surrounded by Pine forests adding up additional beauty.
3. Pykara Lake: Laying in the lap of Mother Nature it’s a stunningly beautiful Lake. One can enjoy boat and speed boat ride here.
4. Pykara Falls: Water flowing form Pykara Dam takes a leap over series of flat rock bed to form Pykara falls. From entrance around two kilometers of walk is required to reach the falls.
5. Shooting Meadows: 9th Mile Shooting Point is one of best attractions in Ooty. It reminds me of 90s Bollywood songs where Govinda, SRK, Madhuri etc dancing on the top of hills. The uphill climbing till top is steep however on rent horse rides are also available with a fees varying from INR 150 to 1000. This place is surrounded by lush green forests giving a delivering a magnificent view. Entry fee is INR 5 per person and fees for camera and video camera ranges from 30 to 100.
6. KamRaj Sagar Dam: There are two entrances for this Dam but one entrance remains closed maximum time that will take you to top of the dam but the other entrance near shooting point is worth visiting. The reflection of pine trees along with the dam on water will give you one heck of a click. There is a big park in the dam bed with horse rides available.
7. Ooty town and Market: Instead of killing time at hotel post dawn you can visit Ooty market where one will get cheap and good quality winter garments, condiments, spices, different variety of tea etc.
8. Ooty Lake: Good place to hang around in second half of day. One can take a walk around the lake or ride across the lake hiring various varieties of boats available. Foggy climate gives a spectacular view. Apart from boating numerous games and activity are available including virtual rides, scary house, horse ride, go karting etc in and around the lake. Nice romantic location to enjoy. Good food available to eat. Best place to relax and get refreshed.
9. Doddabetta Peak: This is the highest peak of southern India with a height of 8640 feet above the sea level. Charming destination with beautiful views and climate is good one can enjoy fog covered Mountain view from this place. I will suggest visiting this place early morning in order to avoid traffic. While returning back don’t forget to visit tea factory on the way.
10. Lambs Rock: This is in Coonoor. Post monsoon on the way many natural water falls erupt out from the mountains. There are multiple view points and you need to pay entry fees to explore them. A short trek is involved so be ready to put in some physical efforts. Entry fee is INR 10 per person and for cameras are 30-50 rupees.
11. Dolphin’s Nose: I loved the stunning and stupendous view of Catherine Water Falls from here. There is a cliff opposite to the view point which resembles dolphin’s nose and this is how the point got its name. There are telescope available here through which tribal village, better view of Catherine fall, Dolphin’s Nose shaped cliff, Black Thunder amusement park, etc can be viewed. Entry fee is INR 10 per person and for cameras are 30-50 rupees. Don’t forget to take a Tea break at Oasis Tea Outlet while returning.
12. Emerald Lake: It was awe-inspiring place but I was not able to reach the lake bed due to G maps, so better ask localities. But the view from the top was splendid. One can plan for this lake while returning from Avalance Lake.
The other locations worth visiting are Avalance Lake, Ooty botanical Garden, Masinagudi etc.

Exotic Birds: Green Cheeked Conure
Learn About Green Cheeked Conure - as part of the expert series by GeoBeats.
Learn About Green Cheeked Conure
Another real popular type of bird is the Green Cheeked Conure. Conures get a real bad reputation sometimes for being very loud. But the Green Cheeked Conure is a type of Conure that's not real loud at all. They call them the quiet conures, doesn't mean they don't make any noise at all, but comparatively speaking, they're very quiet. Very playful, very cuddly, they absolutely love to go into things and curl up in your hair at night or go in tents to sleep, very playful, and really good at learning tricks.
Green Cheeked Conure has a lot of different mutations. So mutations are almost like hair color. This is what's called a yellow sided mutation, I also have, this is a pineapple mutation. Some other mutations of the Green Cheeked Conure are the Turquoise mutation and the Cinnamon Turquoise. The Turquoise mutation and the Cinnamon Turquoise are new mutations and have only been around for a couple of years. A few years ago when they first started getting these from breeders, they were very expensive because nobody had seen them before. And these little guys were selling for about four-five times of what they sell for now, but we see them a lot more frequently now.
They breed for specific colors, if you see a flock of pigeons outside and you see one that's white, that's a mutation; different than the norm. So what a breeder will do is when they've got a bunch of Green Cheeked Conures if one comes out that's different than the norm, they'll hold onto it and breed it with a hopefully they can find one that's similar to breed for that specific color.
