Estonia , officially the Republic of Estonia (Estonian: Eesti Vabariik), is a country in the Baltic region of Northern Europe. It is bordered to the north by the Gulf of Finland, to the west by the Baltic Sea, to the south by Latvia (343 km), and to the east by Lake Peipus and Russia (338.6 km). Across the Baltic Sea lies Sweden in the west and Finland in the north. The territory of Estonia consists of a mainland and 2,222 islands and islets in the Baltic Sea,covering 45,339 km2 (17,505 sq mi) of land, and is influenced by a humid continental climate.
After centuries of successive Teutonic, Danish, and Swedish rule, Estonians experienced a national awakening that culminated in independence from the Russian Empire towards the end of World War I on 24 February 1918. During World War II, Estonia was then occupied by the Soviet Union in 1940, then Nazi Germany a year later and again in 1944 establishing the Estonian Soviet Socialist Republic. In 1988, during the Singing Revolution, the Estonian SSR issued the Estonian Sovereignty Declaration in defiance of the illegal Soviet rule. Estonia then restored its independence during the 1991 coup by the Soviets on the night of 20 August 1991.
Estonia lies on the eastern shores of the Baltic Sea immediately across the Gulf of Finland from Finland on the level northwestern part of the rising East European platform between 57.3° and 59.5° N and 21.5° and 28.1° E. Average elevation reaches only 50 metres (164 ft) and the country's highest point is the Suur Munamägi in the southeast at 318 metres (1,043 ft). There is 3,794 kilometres (2,357 mi) of coastline marked by numerous bays, straits, and inlets. The number of islands and islets is estimated at some 2,355 (including those in lakes). Two of them are large enough to constitute separate counties: Saaremaa and Hiiumaa.A small, recent cluster of meteorite craters, the largest of which is called Kaali is found on Saaremaa, Estonia.
Estonia is situated in the northern part of the temperate climate zone and in the transition zone between maritime and continental climate. Estonia has four seasons of near-equal length. Average temperatures range from 16.3 °C (61.3 °F) on the Baltic islands to 18.1 °C (64.6 °F) inland in July, the warmest month, and from −3.5 °C (25.7 °F) on the Baltic islands to −7.6 °C (18.3 °F) inland in February, the coldest month. The average annual temperature in Estonia is 5.2 °C (41.4 °F).[97] The average precipitation in 1961–1990 ranged from 535 to 727 mm (21.1 to 28.6 in) per year
Snow cover, which is deepest in the south-eastern part of Estonia, usually lasts from mid-December to late March. Estonia has over 1,400 lakes. Most are very small, with the largest, Lake Peipus, being 3,555 km2 (1,373 sq mi). There are many rivers in the country. The longest of them are Võhandu (162 km or 101 mi), Pärnu (144 km or 89 mi), and Põltsamaa (135 km or 84 mi). Estonia has numerous fens and bogs. Forests cover 61% of Estonia. The most common tree species are pine, spruce and birch.
Phytogeographically, Estonia is shared between the Central European and Eastern European provinces of the Circumboreal Region within the Boreal Kingdom. According to the WWF, the territory of Estonia belongs to the ecoregion of Sarmatic mixed forests.Wikipedia

Tallinn , the capital of Estonia, lies on the southern coast of the Gulf of Finland, only 70 km (43 mi) south of Helsinki. At the historical and medieval heart of the city is the hill of Toompea, covered in cobbled streets and filled with medieval houses and alleyways. The lower town spreads out from the foot of the hill, still protected by the remnants of a city wall. Around the city wall is a series of well-maintained green parks, great for strolling.
Medieval Old Town. Excellently preserved, built in the 15-17th centuries. This compact area is best explored on foot.
View to the Tallinn old town
Viru Gate, (Entrance to Viru Street). This section of town is known as All-Linn or Lower Town, as it's where the merchants and artisans of old Tallinn lived. Today, Viru is still Tallinn's trendiest shopping street and the entire All-Linn is the busiest (and most touristy) bit of Tallinn.
Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. a classic onion-domed 19th-century Russian Orthodox church that has become a touristy symbol of the city, to the annoyance of some who regard it as a symbol of oppression. It was almost demolished in 1924 during Estonia's first brief spell of independence, but the Soviets left it to moulder and it has been restored to its former glory.

Beautiful Walk Through Tallinn, Estonia - The Old City
I had the opportunity to spend 48 hours in Tallinn, Estonia visiting the country where both my grandparents were born and escaped over to Sweden in the 1940's. It such a beautiful old city and so nice to explore and hear people speaking Estonian in their daily lives. It was even more special as I was there on August 1st, my grandfathers 94th Birthday. I was able to send him a snapchat of my self in the old city wishing him a Happy Birthday. If you have the opportunity, I'd highly recommend visiting. You won't be disappointed. I can't wait to go back. 48 hours wasn't enough!

Danish people arrived at the northern end of Baltic Sea across the sea in the summer of 800 years ago. They soon built walls near the sea, creating the 'Danish castle', Tallinn, and the fairy-tale fairy tale of the dark blue Baltic Sea and solid walls did not lose their light in many wars. A happy old story where pastel light pours every time you turn the pages. I decided to go inside. Behind the modern buildings and a short walk on this road, the first page of the fairy tale, written about centuries ago, comes out. As the blue train slowly passes through the yellow houses, the grandfather with the opera glass looks down and faces the brilliant past of Tallinn, which became a wealthy trade city as a member of the medieval European Chinese Confederacy, through the low and round gates to the City Hall Square. The streets of Tallinn seem to have painted their favorite color without seeing any notice on the three angular roofs that children paint. Peaceful atmosphere, colorful buildings and stone floors are all wonderful. There are many places to eat and drink and I like it very much. This is a scenery not found in Munich or Athens. Our expressions throughout the walk here. This is Tallinn.

St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral.
St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is the most spectacular Orthodox church in Tallinn. You will be amazed by all the luxury and opulence inside this grand onion-domed structure.
Tallinn Town Wall.
Tallinn Town Wall is one of the best-preserved medieval fortifications in Europe, which will take you back to the Middle Ages. 20 towers and 1.9 kilometers long, the original wall is still standing, surrounding Tallinn Old Town and creating a wonderful fairytale atmosphere.
Kiek in de Kök.
Kiek in de Kök is a huge 38-meter-high cannon tower, which is now a museum. If you are interested in walls, cannons, and medieval exhibits, you must drop by this place, which is also a starting point of a hidden tunnels system which runs through Toompea Hill.
Kohtuotsa Viewpoint.
Kohtuotsa is one of the best viewpoints in Tallinn. It is a perfect place to visit anytime you want. In the early morning, when the weather is good, you can take photos of an amazing sunrise there. During the day you can admire the beautiful landscape of Tallinn. In the late afternoon, Kohtuotsa is a perfect spot to watch the sunset. And of course, we can’t imagine a better place to take photos of Tallinn at night.

Oleviste Church was built in 1250 and was the tallest building in Europe during the Middle Ages. You must visit if you want to see a true architectural masterpiece. Also, you can go inside the church as it is still actively used for masses and other ceremonies.

We took the Tallink Ferry from Helsinki to Ballin at 10:00 am and arrived by 12:00pm
The ferry was a huge 9 floor cruise ship and the cost for the one day return trip tickets was 65 euros.
We departed by 8:30pm (20:30)
The ferry ride was very smooth and most people sat inside and drank beer or wine which was purchased from the onboard restaurant.
I suggest to get there early and find a seat as soon as possible, because many people had no seats and sat on the floor (some slept).
There is free wifi on board.
The walk from the harbor where the boat docked to the Old town was about 15 minutes and very easy, just follow the signs.
Old Town Ballin is not very large and is composed of the upper and lower parts.
You could easily spend 3 hours walking the charming streets exploring the medieval history.
try to make the walking tour (they have several free ones by searching Google).
Estonia uses the Euro as currency and although things are expensive, they are not as expensive as Finland.
We ate at the Pegasus Restaurant, I suggest the beer bread and the wild game plate.
Visit the oldest cafe in Tallinn, called the Maiasmokk. It's a little pricey but a really fantastic interior. Sit by one of the two windows, or visit the second floor (upstairs).
Drop by the Aptek (pharmacy) which is the oldest continuous running pharmacy in Europe. The ceilings are original so make sure to look up.

Baltic Tour Part 2 - Estonia
The Estonian Sheep Breeders Association hosts a weekend
conference each year. This year the topic was ‘Innovation in Agriculture’ and George was one of the invited speakers for the Saturday afternoon seminar.
George travelled to Estonia from Latvia on the Friday evening
to the conference hotel, on the Island of Saaremaa. A large island
which takes more than one hour to cross by car. Snow was falling quite heavily during the long journey by road from the farm in Latvia where George had been demonstrating.
