Jay Nok Kraton Song Krueng (เจ๊นก กระท้อนทรงเครื่อง) - Jay Nok serves some of the best mixed santol fruit in Thailand, and additionally, her green mango with sweet and fish sauce and shrimp is outstanding. #Thailand #ThaiFood #fruit
As soon as you arrive, you can tell she is truly a queen of fruit. The santol and mangoes that she uses are of the top quality, hard to find, the size, juiciness, and quality that she uses. She’s a master. In order to make mixed santol, she spends 8 hours slowing mixed the syrup so it turns to the right consistency. The santol is peeled and soaked in salt water for 4 hours. When you order, the santol is sliced, topped with the sweet syrup, then peanuts, shredded coconut, and shrimp, and then topped with more syrup. It’s quite an extreme mixture of different and diverse flavors in your mouth at the same time, with the juiciness of the santol fruit.
Mixed santol fruit (กระท้อนทรงเครื่อง) - 100 THB ($3.27)
Possibly even more impressive with diversity of flavors is the green mango with sweet fish sauce, shrimp and chilies. The crunch of the mango and the contast of the shrimp paste, sweetness, shallots, and chilies, was spectacular.
Green mango, sweet sauce (มะม่วงน้ำปลาหวาน) - 100 THB ($3.27)
As we were leaving, the amazing Jay Nok gave us a few of her prized santol fruit to take home. So I thought, let’s go home and make santol fruit curry. My mother in law makes it from time to time during the season, and it’s so good because the fruity juiciness of the fruit with the spicy coconut milk based curry.
We ended up having santol fruit 3 ways, raw natural, mixed with sweet syrup, and in curry. It was a day of learning about santol fruit and Thai food!

Looking for an authentic and unique adventure? Co van Kessel bike tours and boat tours provides a refreshing alternative to the tired tourist experience. We do not battle the crowds at clichéd destinations promoted in guide books, but turn your attention to quaint local communities and charming excursions into the fascinating lifestyle and culture of real Thai people. Every day is different and every tour is a surprise as we focus not on destinations, but lose ourselves in the enchantment of the journey itself.
Co van Kessel, an innovative and adventurous Dutchman, pioneered bicycle tours in Bangkok more than 30 years ago. As a longtime resident and self-professed lover of Bangkok, he understood very well the picture of accelerated urban development (gridlocked traffic, concrete towers, and choking pollution) that has plagued the recent image of the city. He also had a hunch that this was not what Bangkok or Thailand was all about.
Making it his goal to re-discover Bangkok, Co spent thousands of hours on his mountain bike exploring the vast network of local streets, alleyways, footpaths and canals between the main urban thoroughfares. What he found, lurking behind the facade of modernization, were hidden worlds of peace and tranquility, a picture of “real” Thai life that has remained unchanged for countless decades; an identity of a city that is true to the Thai people, yet largely unknown to outsiders.
Whether it’s the colorful sights and smells of the local markets, the fascinating life of locals along the canals, or the surprising existence of bountiful green belts, Co discovered the essence of what makes Bangkok one of Asia’s most captivating cities. Since then, it has been his mission to share these discoveries with the rest of the world.
What we do
Our mission at Co van Kessel Bangkok Tours is to provide our guests with a singularly unique travel experience in Thailand. All our tours use Co’s extensive topographical knowledge of the greater Bangkok area as well as his keen eye for the interesting to take you where nobody else can or will.
We aim not to bore you with talk, but to immerse you in an experience where your individual fascinations emerge.
Bicycles, boats, and our feet become the tools we use to gain access to the previously inaccessible, behind-the-scenes lifestyle of the Thai. Here the roots of an ancient culture will become evident in a way you never could have imagined.

Fiery Papaya Salad at Or Tor Kor Market (ตลาด อตก) - Bangkok Day 5
2 Weeks In Bangkok eBook (it’s FREE):
T-shirts:
Dwight’s (BKK Fatty) Channel:
Cat’s Channel:
On Day 5 we checked out of our hotel at Khao San Road and transferred to Sathon, which is one of the main downtown financial districts of Bangkok. From there, we headed to Or Tor Kor Market (ตลาด อตก), which is one of the best food markets in Bangkok, and then went on to Chatuchak Weekend Market (ตลาดนัดจตุจักร) to do some walking around with Dwight.
00:47 Som Song Pochana (ร้านสมทรงโภชนา) - Before leaving Khao San Road, we stopped at a restaurant called Som Song Pochana (ร้านสมทรงโภชนา) to have a bowl of kuay teow Sukhothai haeng (ก๋วยเตี๋ยวต้มยำสุโขทัยเส้นเล็กแห้ง).
5:15 Or Tor Kor Market (ตลาด อตก) - Or Tor Kor Market (ตลาด อตก) is one of the best Thai food markets in Bangkok - it’s a very nice and clean market, and there’s a really good mixture of both fresh vegetables and fruit for sale, as well as a good sized food court where you can sit down and choose from all sorts of different things. The market is a little on the expensive side compared to other fresh markets in Bangkok, but the food is known to be very high quality, and you can get some of the best ingredients and fresh fruits in all of Thailand. Along with Dwight, I started off with khanom buang (ขนมเบื้อง), a Thai dessert that is a small pancake crepe filled with a variety of different toppings. I’m not a huge sweets fan, but they were alright. We then proceeded on to eat a plate of rice and curry, khao gaeng (ข้าวแกง), which was delicious. For my main meal at Or Tor Kor Market (ตลาด อตก) this day, I went to a stall called Som Tam Or Tor Kor Restaurant (ร้านส้มตำ อตก), which specializes mainly in Thai green papaya salad and grilled chicken. I ordered a fiery plate of som tam boo pla ra (ส้มต้มปูปลาร้า), Thai green papaya salad with fermented fish and crab - it was incredibly delicious and incredibly spicy! I also had a full gai yang (ไก่ย่าง), grilled chicken, which was incredibly good as well. Finally, Dwight came to the table with some durian and mangosteen, which is always a good thing to eat when you go to Or Tor Kor Market (ตลาด อตก).
16:18 Right across the MRT station from Or Tor Kor Market is Chatuchak Weekend Market (ตลาดนัดจตุจักร), one of the most famous attractions in all of Bangkok. After getting some much needed water, I then had some kai pla meuk tod (ไข่ปลาหมึกทอด), which are fried squid eggs, and they are quite a popular snack at the market. They are fried in lots of oil, and then covered in a chili garlic sauce. They kind of remind me of eating egg yolks, they are definitely pretty rich, and with the chili sauce they are pretty good.
22:48 Stall at Silom Soi 9 (สีลมซอย 9) - For dinner we met up with a friend who took us to one of his favorite stalls on Silom Soi 9. We were with a group and we ordered up a bunch of different dishes including goong pad pongari (กุ้งผัดผงกะหรี่) - shrimp in yellow egg curry, meuk pad cha (หมึกผัดฉ่า) - squid with fingerroot, potaek talay (โป๊ะแตกทะเล) - seafood soup, kana moo krob (คะน้าหมูกรอบ) - kailan with crispy pork, moo manao (หมูมะนาว) - sour lime juice pork, neua dad diaw (เนื้อแดดเดียว) - dried fried pork, and finally a kai jeow moo saab (ไข่เจียวหมูสับ) - Thai style omelet for dessert to top everything off.
Thank you for watching Day 5 in this Bangkok travel guide video series!

Green Papaya Salad Som Tam Streetfood in Thailand ส้มตำ
Green papaya salad is a spicy salad made from shredded unripe papaya. Locally known in Cambodia as bok l'hong (Khmer: បុកល្ហុង), pronounced [ɓok lhoŋ], in Laos as tam som (Lao: ຕໍາສົ້ມ) or the more specific name tam maak hoong (Lao: ຕໍາໝາກຫຸ່ງ), in Thailand as som tam (Thai: ส้มตำ, pronounced [sôm tam]), and in Vietnam as goi du du. Som tam, the Thai variation, was listed at number 46 on World's 50 most delicious foods compiled by CNN Go in 2011.[1]

Preparation[edit]
Unripe papaya is sliced into thin strips during preparation
The dish combines the five main tastes of the local cuisine: sour lime, hot chili, salty, savory fish sauce, and sweetness added by palm sugar. The ingredients are mixed and pounded in a mortar; The general Lao name tam som literally means pounded sour, however, the more specific Lao name tam maak hoong literally means pounded papaya. In Khmer, the name bok l'hong also means pounded papaya. In Thai, the name som tam, (a reversal of the Lao name), literally translates as sour pounded. However, other pounded salads in Thailand are consistent with the Lao naming convention in which the word tam (pounded) is listed first.
Despite the use of papaya, which one may think of as sweet, this salad is actually savory. When not yet ripe, papaya has a slightly tangy flavor. The texture is crisp and firm, sometimes to the point of crunchiness. It is this that allows the fruit to withstand being beaten in the mortar.
Street vendor from Isan pounding green papaya salad in Bangkok
Green papaya salad, grilled chicken and sticky rice is a popular combination in Thailand
Together with the papaya, some or most of the following secondary items are added and pounded in the mortar with the pestle:
Chili
Sugar (traditionally palm sugar)
Garlic
Lime
Fish sauce
Dried shrimp
Papaya salad is often served with sticky rice and kai yang/ping gai (grilled chicken). It can also be eaten with fresh rice noodles (Lao: sen khao poon / Thai: khanom chin) or simply as a snack by itself with, for instance, crispy pork rinds. The dish is often accompanied by raw vegetables on the side to mitigate the spiciness of the dish.
Variations[edit]
A non-spicy green papaya salad version also exists in Laos, Vietnam, and Thailand, which is much sweeter; it often contains crushed peanuts, and is less likely to have padaek or brined crab. These last are eaten raw, and both the Lao government and Thai government periodically issues health warnings about the risk of hepatitis.[12] Dried brine shrimp are used in this Central Thai version. There are also versions that make use of unripe mangoes, apples, cucumbers, carrots, and other firm vegetables or unripe fruit.
There are many versions of this salad in Cambodia, but it will always include unripe papaya.Instead of papaya, other ingredients can be used as the main ingredient. Popular variations in Laos and Thailand include:
Tam maak taeng / Tam taengkwa, with cucumber, usually the small variety
Tam maak muang / Tam mamuang, with green and unripe mango
Tam maak kuai / Tam kluai, with banana, while still green and unripe
Tam krathon, with santol, while still hard and unripe
Tam hua pli, with banana flower
Tam mayom, with Malay gooseberry
Tam som o, with pomelo
Tam mu yo, with mu yo sausage
Tam phonlamai ruam, with mixed fruit

WORLDS BIGGEST MARKET - Chatuchak Weekend Market, Bangkok Thailand
Chatuchak Weekend Market in Bangkok Thailand is the World’s Biggest Market held on weekends. Chatuchak, or JJ Market, spans over 27 acres of land with 15,000 vendors to choose from. Talk about the ultimate Bangkok shopping day!
When looking for things to do in Bangkok, the Chatuchak Weekend Market was top on many lists. Also spelled Jatujak, this bangkok market is the largest in the country of Thailand. You can spend an entire day browsing the different sections and sois of Chatuchak and still not see everything. Our best advice? If you find something you like, buy it! It’s unlikely you will be able to find the same vendor again.
While browsing this weekend market, we found some of the best bangkok street food that we had during our entire bangkok travel. We both have a pretty big sweet tooth, so you know coconut ice-cream and mango smoothies were on our list of things to eat! There is a huge variety of Thai street food at the Chatuchak weekend market, so we suggest snacking your way through so you can try a little of everything.
If for some reason you find yourself bored in Thailand, this is one of the best Bangkok activities around. We hope you enjoyed this episode of our Thailand Travel Vlog and be sure to stick around for more! If you have any questions about the Chatuchak Weekend Market or JJ Market, please leave a comment below. If you know something about this bangkok market that we didn’t mention, also let us know down in the comments. We’d love to hear from you. Until next time, seeya!
* Unlike other travel vloggers, we live and work in a different country each month. Our channel will show you what it’s like to live abroad while exploring top tourist destinations and hidden gems. We will eat local cuisine but still find the best spots to have American food while overseas. Each month we rent an apartment or airbnb in a different city or country, so follow along on this journey and learn about countries around the world. I travel to different parts of the world, hunting down and documenting the most unique food each country has to offer. If you see any factual food errors in my videos, please feel free to politely let me know in the comments. I'm a huge fan of trying different, interesting foods in each country. My show is from a Western point of view, but more importantly, MY point of view. It is not meant to offend any person or culture.
Don’t forget to subscribe to Best Ever Food Review Show, so we can connect through food and travel and become Bestys!
