Borden
Borden is one of the entrance points to the Stirling Range National Park. The park is known for the variety of flowers and the number of bird species it contains. To-date nearly 190 species of birds have been identified in the park. Estimates for the types of wildflowers range over 1000.
Free willy?
Hmmm.. not sure about the political correctness of this one but there is (apparently) a whale's willy mounted on one of the walls of the Borden Tavern.
The Lily
This replica of a Dutch windmill was built out of recycled bricks and timber from the old Albany jetty by Mr. Pleun Hitzert. It is a fully operational flour mill producing organic flour which is sold from the premises. There is an adjacent restaurant located in a reconstructed railway station that originated in Gnowangerup.
I guess from the above you could say that Borden's claim to fame is the Lily and the willy.....

GOLD MINING IN SOUTHERN CROSS THE LAST THIRTY YEARS
Thomas Risely¹s account of the discovery gives an insight into the hardships which were to confront the settlers of the area.
Myself, Toomey and Charlie Crossland, started out from our camp at Barcoyton. After prospecting the belt for some days our water gave out. Our blackboy whom I call Wheelbarrow, said he knew plenty of Gabby (water) at Koorkoordine. When we got to Koorkoordine we found one of Hunt¹s dry wells, just as dry as we were. We decided to start back through the night and return to our camp, distance about 40 miles, and we travelled by the Southern Cross - taken to stars to the north - thanks to Charlie Crossland¹s knowledge of the stars. Or our bones would be bleaching in the scrub now, as we were two days without water at this time. We had to remain at our camp until rains came, them myself and Mick Toomey set out again. We discovered gold four miles from Koorkoordine. I named the place Southern Cross.¹
There was a small goldrush but it was short-lived (this was an area of reef gold not alluvial gold) because on 17 September 1892 a young Queenslander, Arthur Wellesly Bayley, rode into Southern Cross with 554 oz of gold which he had discovered at Fly Flat (now Coolgardie). The discovery started the greatest gold rush in West Australian history. Overnight the miners who had flocked to the Southern Cross diggings moved to the more lucrative eastern fields.
The town¹s growth was dramatic but it was never a boisterous centre like Coolgardie or Kalgoorlie. In 1891 the Eastern Goldfields first courthouse was built. By 1893 it had become a municipality. And in 1894 the railway arrived giving the town fast and reliable access to the coast.
Today the area produces oats, barley, wheat, sheep and gold but the average annual rainfall of 279 mm means that the land is marginal. In recent times the fluctuating price of gold has seen renewed interest in the Southern Cross area with both Broken Hill Metals NL and Golden Valley Mines NL being the main operators in the region
Little Bay Campground. Horrocks W.A.
Little Bay Campground. Horrocks W.A. If you love camping and travelling and want to see campgrounds and their individual campsites in Australia, check out my videos.
These videos and website started off in the early nineties as markers and scribblings on a giant map of Australia on my games room wall of all the best places in Australia to go and camp, fish and four wheel drive. After many years of practical research as well as reading four wheel drive magazines and watching every camping, fishing and four wheel driving TV show (it’s been a harrowing and arduous task); I recently realised that come the time my wife and I can leave the kids behind and head off on a trip longer than a school holiday break; I’m either going to need a bloody big plastic sleeve to put the map in, or I’m going to have to drag myself kicking and screaming into the 21st century………
Though I haven’t been to every campground in Australia to video each one yet, I have done many in Western Australia and will continue until such time as I can do it full time and spend the rest of my life travelling the rest of Australia camping and videoing every campsite! It might take a while so bear with me…...
“SIN, SAND, SORROW, SICKNESS AND SHILLING DRINKS”: Stories from the Western Australian Gold Rush
Ann Delroy, Head of History Department
Explore some of the colourful stories of life following the gold strike at Kalgoorlie in 1893. How did people get to the 'fields? What did they live in? Where did their water come from? How did they pan for gold in waterless country?
Bruce Rock
The area depends mostly on cereal crops and sheep and is a receival point for Cooperative Bulk Handling.
A rare underground orchid can be found in the area. This variety spends its entire life cycle beneath the earth and even flowering takes place underground. I understand they are a bit hard to find.
The nearby town of Shackleton has what is reputed to be Australia's smallest bank. As it measures only 3x4 metres the claim is in all likelihood quite true. It is currently operated by Bankwest and is open on Fridays.
An excellent free campsite has been opened in the shire at the site there the town of Kwolyin once stood.
Bruce Rock is one of the larger towns in the area and contains a number of interesting buildings. The local museum is worth a visit and if you want to pick up supplies, the store and butcher are good places to drop in to.
Like most inland towns, Bruce Rock has a good rest area for travellers and modern clean public toilets. Rather unusually, the toilets are attached to a building containing old cars and machinery.
