Worcester: The Sad State of the Greendale Mall (October 2019): In-Store Water Fountains
It's been awhile since coming to the Greendale Mall in Worcester, Massachusetts, but it was due for a visit.
Three stores closed up, although two of them were on their final days last visit, the big jewelry store, and an anchor, Big Lots.
We look into some of the stores since we have the daylight streaming in, to show where water has also been streaming in. No doubt this place will start to small like a mold colony in a matter of months.
We do gloss over some parts, as nothing has changed.
Greendale Mall: Sad Dead Mall in Worcester, MA - Raw & Real Retail
This is our walkthrough of Greendale Mall in Worcester, MA from January 2, 2019. This is a vintage mall full of stone and brickwork and open painted steel girders. It is unfortunately a quite dead mall that doesn't have a very promising future, with one of their remaining two anchors, Big Lots, closing this month (01/19). The air inside the mall has a stale edge to it, the escalators have been turned off and walled into a box visible from the main floor, and the elevator is turned off. From what I understand, the mall gets very dark at night because the current owners rely on storefronts to light the mall, and it has very little of those left. It would seem as the current owner of the mall (the mall was sold at auction to the mortgage holder after Simon defaulted on its loan) is headed down the Namdar/Moonbeam route of just letting a property rot and prolonging its death.

Here is a brief history from Wikipedia:
The Greendale Mall is an enclosed shopping mall located near the intersection of Interstates 290 and 190 in Worcester, Massachusetts. The complex has traditionally had two anchor stores, located at the northern and southern entrances. An expansion in the late-1990s added a third anchor store, near the mall's center entrance. DSW, Best Buy, TJ Maxx, and Big Lots occupy the anchor positions. Lechmere used to have a store in the space now partially occupied by Best Buy, but closed in 1997. The anchor at the end of the mall was Marshalls until 2007. It became Big Lots in 2010. In January of 2019 Big Lots announced that this location would be closing.
Simon Property Group purchased the mall in 1999. The company stopped paying the debt on the mall in October 2015 and the noteholder took ownership of the Mall. At the time of the takeover by the note holder, the mall was performing very poorly. In November 2015, the mall was appraised at $14.7 million but had a loan value of $45 million.
In June 2016, the mall was sold at auction to Chicago law firm Seyfarth Shaw LLP for $11.8 million, the mortgage holder of the property, after no other bids were received. In September 2016, Burlington-based KeyPoint Partners, the company representing the new owners and managing the building, announced that Worcester's only enclosed shopping mall would remain open.
On December 19, 2018, it was announced that Big Lots would be closing in January 2019.

Worcester: The Sad State of the Greendale Mall (December 2018): Deaths Come in Threes
It's been a year since there was significant changes to the Greendale Mall in Worcester, Massachusetts.
As the old saying goes when it comes to celebrities: Deaths come in threes. It appears the same can be said about stores in this mall.
One died not long after the first video, but two are just days from closing for good, one of them a Big anchor. This place is really in a world of hurt. If Best Buy does another round of store closings, this place will likely get the ax, then you can put the final nail in it's coffin. (There still is the TJX multi-brand store, and that's doing well, but will they have to be vacated, or do something to separate the mall from it? That's all this place has, as you'll see.)
Greendale mall worcester. A dying mall
Worcester: The Sad State of the Greendale Mall (Black Friday, November 2019): Best Bye-Bye
Just one month after visiting the Greendale Mall, another huge tenant moves out, along with another semi-large one to boot.
There's only a handful of stores left, but TJ Maxx is going strong.
This was recorded on Black Friday, where malls, and freeways going to them should be jammed, not here.
There's not much of a future left, if Black Friday at it's peak looks like this.
At the end, there's photos looking in to select stores, flash isn't the best, and glassed fronts didn't work at all, except one. Just captured the flash, even though the phone was pressed up against the glass to mitigate that issue (again, it worked once).
Greendale Mall, Worcester MA, Oct 2019
I remember when the mall was packed with people. I can recall driving around looking for a parking space. Now there are only a couple if stores left, and no people. Dark, gloomy, sad.
Worcester: The Sad State of the Greendale Mall (November 2017) Dying Mall?
I came to this mall on the way back home, to make a quick pit stop, and found that this fully-recovered mall (from 2016) is in a very sad state. There's about a 66% occupancy, the escalators are turned and walled off, and most of the lights are not even turned on. You rely on the storefornts and carts to light the mall, which is clearly evident in this video.
How bad is it, that you only run 20% of your mall lights (VERY DARK PLACE!), kill the escalator, and not even try to fill the vacancies?
Looks like this is truly a dying mall, and we caught it in the earlier stages of it's death. It can be salvaged, but one wonders if it's gone too far, especially since some bigger stores are closing, and some are teetering.
There is a brief history on why this place exists to begin with, and it was a very successful place, until Solomon Pond Mall gained a lot of traction up the road.

Rockin' the Gauntlet: Greendale Mall (Worcester, MA)
This is me attempting to ride what few people-movers are here at the Greendale Mall, Worcester, Massachusetts.
It's a single-story mall for the most part, outside of a few stores sharing the food court on the lower level. There's a pair of shorter Montgomery Escalators, and a scenic elevator.
On a side note, as shown in this area, and farther in the mall (not shown), it appears this mall is dying. There's 2 clusters of dead stores, and you see 1 of them. Odd thing is, it's still tough to find parking here.

Worcester: Creepy Montgomery Hydraulic Elevator @ Dark and Creepy Greendale Mall
This is the very dark Montgomery Hydraulic Elevator, inside the very dark and creepy Greendale Mall in Worcester, Massachusetts.
Still rides well, but the mall is on it's death bed. It appears it's not going to be around much longer.
It's bad enough they put cheap LED accent lighting in the cab, which makes it very dark on it's own. Add the very dark mall, and it's just a very creepy and unsafe place. No wonder nobody comes here anymore. This was at the height of activity, and it's DEAD. If you've seen the walk-though video a couple videos before this one, it's at it's peak.

As you can see, it's bright, cheery, and so crowded, it became a fire hazard.
