Brewing at Fullers - Part 2
2nd part of the history of modern brewing at Fullers across 2 generations of head brewers.
Greene King Brewery
See our Brewery. See what makes Greene King tick. An inside look at the day to day workings of Westgate Brewery in Bury St Edmunds.
Greene King has been brewing quality cask ales at the Westgate Brewery in Bury St Edmunds for over 200 years. There has been a brewery on our site since 1700, but brewing in the town can be traced back as far as the days of the Doomsday book in 1086. We still draw our water from chalk wells under the brewery that have been used in brewing for almost 1,000 years. It was good enough for the Benedictine monks of St Edmund and it’s good enough for us.
Follow our Head Brewer on a journey through the brewery. Ending, of course, with a well-deserved pint of Greene King IPA down the local pub at the end of the day.

Bury St Edmunds is a market town in Suffolk, England. Bury St Edmunds Abbey is near the town centre. Bury is the seat of the Diocese of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich, with the episcopal see at St Edmundsbury Cathedral.
Bury St. Edmunds originally called Beodericsworth, was built on a grid pattern by Abbot Baldwin around 1080. Bury St. Edmunds is known for brewing and malting (Greene King brewery) and for a British Sugar processing factory, where Silver Spoon sugar is produced. The town of Bury St. Edmunds is the cultural and retail centre for West Suffolk and tourism is a major part of the economy.
Bury is located in the middle of an undulating area of East Anglia known as the East Anglian Heights, with land to the East and West of the town rising to above 100 metres (328 feet), though parts of the town itself are as low as 30 metres (98 feet) above sea level where the Rivers Lark and Linnet pass through it.
Bury St Edmunds railway station serves the town, operated by Abellio Greater Anglia, on the Ipswich to Ely Line. Trains run seven days a week, every two hours to Peterborough and hourly to Ipswich and Cambridge. Trains from Peterborough continue to Ipswich after Bury St Edmunds. Onward train connections from Cambridge link with London King's Cross, London Liverpool Street, Stansted Airport, and Ipswich which provides connections to London Liverpool Street via Colchester for example. The main interchange for bus and coach services for Bury St Edmunds is the bus and coach station, located on St Andrews Street North in the town centre.

While collecting the items placed around town for the St Edmunds Treasure Hunt, I thought it would be a cool idea to take a little video inside the Greene King Cafe.

“Huge opportunities” in the pub sector says Greene King’s Blythman
Mark Blythman, Strategy and IR director at Greene King (LON:GNK), says that while the pub industry is “still fragmented,” there are “huge opportunities” for the business in the current climate.
The pub chain has been focusing on long term security since the financial crisis in 2007, buying, building and developing pubs that meet its criteria.
Blythman says “the death nails that were signed in 2007 and since then were premature,” adding that “the British pub still has a warm place in people’s hearts in this country.”

To The Pub - Nice Barmaids at The Barley Mow
A good pub plays many roles. From ‘an extension of the office’ to somewhere to meet the ‘nice barmaids’.

At the heart of many communities, the pub brings people together from all walks of life.
From those who enjoy a quiet pint or a game of darts, through to celebrating weddings and sharing memories of friends and family – every pub has a tale to tell and here they are.
Championed by Greene King IPA, ‘To The Pub’ is a series of 50 pubs telling their own stories in their own words. Each film independently directed by the landlords, their staff and the locals that visit regularly. Capturing those unique moments we all recognise and love about our nation’s pubs.
We hope you enjoy the films as much as we do. Cheers.
You can visit the Barley Mow in person at 82 Duke St. London. W1K 6JF
Greene King IPA is our flagship beer, born and brewed in Bury St Edmunds.
IPA stands for India Pale Ale, a style of ale brewed for export during the time of the Indian Raj (c. 1856). IPA was brewed with an unusually high volume of hops so they could preserve the ale during the long voyage to India. Funnily enough, though, our ale never made it to India. Perhaps we just didn't want to see it leave.
Many people are involved in bringing you Greene King IPA – from the farmers in the fields to the brewers back at the brewery and the landlords in the cellars. We're lucky to be surrounded by people who are passionate about what we do – and the quality of beers we craft together.
Greene King | Strong Suffolk Dark Ale
As the name suggests, Strong Suffolk is not for the faint-hearted. We blend a proportion of our very special and rare vintage 5X brew with a rich malty Dark Ale to create a deeply satisfying and complex beer. Just one of a selection of great-tasting beers, created by Greene King at our home in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, England.
To The Pub - Barmaids who will make you smile at The Fox
Meet the staff and locals of The Fox where good company is key and a smile off the barmaid can make anyone’s day.

For more than 200 years, we’ve been brewing quality cask ales at the Westgate Brewery in Bury St Edmunds.
It’s exciting to think that we’ve had a brewery on our site since 1700. But even more impressive is that brewing in the town can be traced back as far as the Domesday book in 1086.
We built a new brewhouse at Westgate Brewery in 1938 and we’re still using the building to brew all of our beers today. It’s designed so that gravity transfers the ingredients from one floor to the next for each stage of the brewing process.
We’re really proud of our heritage, it’s taught us a lot. We’re also proud that we are as passionate about our beers today as our brewing ancestors were before us. We know it’s this innate passion in our people that means we brew quality beers day in, day out.

Sampling the Greene King IPA that Xi Ordered - British Journalist in China Back Home EP.3
I'm Matt Horn, and I'm a journalist. For the last 15 years I've lived and worked in China.
When Chinese President Xi visited the U.K.in 2015, he held meeting with the former Prime Minister David Cameron of the UK in Chequers Court, the Prime Minister's country retreat. After the meeting, Xi Jinping, accompanied by former Prime Minister David Cameron, went to local town by car to experience the pub culture. The two leaders had beers and the British specialty food fish and chips. Since then the pub is attractive to Chinese tourists.
Roughly a year later, this 16th century Buckinghamshire pub was sold to a Chinese company for a sum believed to be in excess of two million pounds. The pub's new owner SinoFortone plans to use the Plough as a model to build more English-style pubs in China.
