Mornington Peninsula
The Mornington Peninsula, on the eastern side of Port Phillip Bay, feels like an island with a vast ocean to the south and bays and sheltered beaches on either side. Fertile hills roll down to pretty beaches or harbours and serene bay views abound.
Some of Australia's best sandy beaches can be found here and every kind of water activity is available, from sailing and surfing to fishing and dolphin swims. There are also majestic coastal walks past dunes, beaches, cliffs and lighthouses. On the bay side of the peninsula, visit stylish Sorrento with its fine 19th century buildings and excellent eateries, boutiques and galleries. Stop off at Mornington and enjoy its cosmopolitan sidewalk cafes and picturesque harbour. On the other side of the peninsula visit the charming fishing hamlet of Flinders and take a trip to nearby Cape Schanck where you can enjoy superb views of Bass Strait.
Alternatively head inland and explore the abundance of vineyards and orchards tucked away among the rolling hills of Red Hill and Main Ridge. Wineries and restaurants overlook the blue waters of Port Phillip Bay to the west and Western Port Bay to the east and the peninsula's orchards sell fresh produce direct from the farmgate.
For anybody who has ever teed up, the Mornington Peninsula is golfing heaven. Take on the daunting Moonah Links, specifically designed for the prestigious Australian Open, or head to The Dunes, a Scottish-style links layout rated as one of the top 15 courses in Australia.
The region is also noted for its historic homes and gardens and has been a retreat for artists for more than a century. Visit some of the excellent galleries and craft markets at towns such as Red Hill and Mornington.

Human NO TIP Message - 7 News
The Ross Trust and Peninsula Waste Management want to turn the old Pioneer quarry on the side of Arthurs Seat into a putrid dumping ground.
The site was once an open cut granite mine but has since been reclaimed by nature and become a beautiful pristine place, with a stunning lake surrounded by bush that is home to many native plants and wildlife. It is in an environmentally valuable area in between two state parks and this proposal poses not only a massive health risk to Peninsula residents and the environment, but also threatens our thriving tourism industry and many local businesses.
The planning application for a tip in the quarry states that it will take all rubbish including asbestos and will not have any recycling capability.
The Mornington Peninsula Shire Council were supposed to oversee the conversion of the site into a lake with walking tracks and picnic areas for the residents of the Mornington Peninsula and it's visitors, but instead, we're now staring down the barrel of an absolute disaster.
On Sunday 25th August 2013, roughly 1000 members of the Mornington Peninsula Community formed a huge human NO TIP sign which was filmed and photographed from the air.
The community wanted to demonstrate their anger after an EPA Conference failed to answer their questions and concerns about the tip proposal. The message was filmed at the Hillview Reserve, Boundary Road, Dromana near to the Old Pioneer Quarry which the Ross Trust owns.
There were speakers from the community opposing the tip including Peninsula Preservation Group Inc. Mary Karamitsios from PPG said The Ross Trust continues to push on with this application even though it has been demonstrated to them that the tip is not wanted or needed by anyone. There are other safer, viable alternatives.
Dr Mark Fancett, Vice President of PPG pointed out that there is compelling scientific evidence that states that fire risk of this tip is magnified as this site is surrounded by bush land rated among the Shire's highest bushfire risk areas. Litter, gas emissions, land and groundwater contamination would gravely affect the water table, Sheepwash Creek and the Bay and flora and fauna, some of them on the endangered list.
Rosalie White, owner of Mainridge Estate winery, representing the local vignerons said a bush fire starting in the proposed rubbish tip could devastate the peninsula's $60 million a year wine industry.
The Greens Sue Pennicuik MLC and local candidate Dr Martin Rush also spoke out against the tip.
The Ross Trust has so far barely responded to community concerns and the community wants to know why the Mornington Peninsula Shire failed to provide accessible information to the community about viable alternative waste management options.

So far, over 20,000 people have signed petitions opposing the tip. To add your name to the list of objectors, go to

Footage taken by the NSW Rural Fire Service showed a bushfire sweeping through an area near Bemboka in the Bega Valley in south-east New South Wales.
The nearby area of Cobargo also experienced a fire-generated thunderstorm, according to the NSW Rural Fire Service. Authorities said that dry lightning could spark further flare-ups in Australia's fire-ravaged regions.

Sam Bush Band - Magnoliafest, Live Oak, Fl - Entire Show 10-18-03
As always, a fun, energetic set. This one with some covers of Hartford,Morrison & Dylan...Setlist can be seen at bottom of bio....
Sam Bush was exposed to country and bluegrass music at an early age through his father Charlie's record collection, and later by the Flatt & Scruggs television show. Buying his first mandolin at the age of 11, his musical interest was further piqued when he attended the inaugural Roanoke, VA Bluegrass Festival in 1965. As a teen Bush took first place three times in the junior division of the National Oldtime Fiddler's Contest in Weiser, ID. He joined guitarist Wayne Stewart, his mentor and music teacher during Sam's teen years, and banjoist Alan Munde (later of Country Gazette) and the three recorded an instrumental album, Poor Richard's Almanac, in 1969.[1] In the spring of 1970, Bush attended the Fiddlers Convention at Union Grove, NC, and was inspired by the rock-flavored progressive bluegrass of the New Deal String Band.[2] Later that year, he moved to Louisville and joined the Bluegrass Alliance. In the fall of 1971, the band dissolved and reformed as the New Grass Revival.
The New Grass Revival went through numerous personnel changes, with Bush remaining as the sole original member. Bassist and vocalist John Cowan joined in 1974, with banjo ace Béla Fleck and acoustic guitarist Pat Flynn being enlisted in 1981. From 1979 through 1981, the group toured with Leon Russell, opening the shows and backing Russell during his headlining set.
Beginning in 1980, Bush and Cowan periodically jammed with the Nashville-based Duckbutter Blues Band, whose other members were blues guitarist Kenny Lee, drummer Jeff Jones, and bassist Byron House. Bush recorded his debut solo album, Late as Usual, four years later. In 1989, Bush and Fleck joined Mark O'Connor, Jerry Douglas, and Edgar Meyer in an all-star bluegrass band, Strength in Numbers, at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival in Colorado. When the New Grass Revival dissolved in 1989, Bush joined Emmylou Harris' Nash Ramblers, touring and recording with Harris for the next five years.
In 1995, Bush worked as a sideman with Lyle Lovett and Bela Fleck's Flecktones. He formed his own band, featuring Cowan and ex-Nash Ramblers Jon Randall and Larry Atamanuick, shortly before recording his second solo album, Glamour & Grits, in 1996. He released his next album, Howlin' at the Moon, in 1998, with many of the same players and special guests, including Harris, Fleck and J. D. Crowe.
In the winter of 1997, Bush and the New Grass Revival reunited for an appearance on Late Night with Conan O'Brien as the backup band for Garth Brooks. On March 28, 1998, Bush's hometown of Bowling Green, KY, honored him with a special Sam Bush Day celebration.
Following Howlin' at the Moon in 1998, he released Ice Caps: Peaks of Telluride in 2000, which was a live recording. In 2004, Randall left Bush's band and Brad Davis (musician) took over harmony vocals and guitar duties.
In 2006, Bush released Laps in Seven. The release was significant because it marked the return of the banjo to Bush's recordings, performed by Scott Vestal. The guitarist, Keith Sewell, performed on the recording, but shortly after took a job with the Dixie Chicks. Bush sought a new guitarist for his recordings and road band and found Stephen Mougin.
In 2007, Bush released his first live concert DVD, titled On The Road. 2007 also marked the first time he had been chosen to host the International Bluegrass Music Association Awards.
In March 2010, Legislation passed in Kentucky that officially named Bowling Green the Birthplace of Newgrass and Sam Bush the Father of Newgrass. The Resolution, sponsored by Representative Jim DeCesare, passed the Kentucky Senate 37-0 on March 25. It passed the House on March 3, 99-0.
As well as being an accomplished bluegrass vocalist, Bush also is an accomplished instrumentalist on guitar and fiddle winning title of National Fiddle champion at fifteen years of age. He was a founding member of the New Grass Revival and has been called a modern day Bill Monroe, or as Sam would tell . .
. . if Bill was the father of bluegrass then I could be the mother because Monroe would say: 'here comes that mother now!'

Fools & Dreamers: Regenerating a Native Forest is a 30-minute documentary about Hinewai Nature Reserve, on New Zealand’s Banks Peninsula, and its kaitiaki/manager of 30 years, botanist Hugh Wilson. When, in 1987, Hugh let the local community know of his plans to allow the introduced ‘weed’ gorse to grow as a nurse canopy to regenerate farmland into native forest, people were not only skeptical but outright angry – the plan was the sort to be expected only of “fools and dreamers”.
Now considered a hero locally and across the country, Hugh oversees 1500 hectares resplendent in native forest, where birds and other wildlife are abundant and 47 known waterfalls are in permanent flow. He has proven without doubt that nature knows best – and that he is no fool.
