A green walk around Sintra
Our guest Norman Saarloos made this video of the walk to and from the castles (Pena Palace and the Moorish Castle) on the top of the hill! The walk is about 7 kms long.

Day 22 - Millionaires pastle
Quinta da Regaleira. Past home to a batshit crazy millionaire. In the beginning, a basic palace was built on the land and owned by some dudes from Porto. But it was sold to Monteiro (the batshit crazy millionaire) in 1892. He basically made the palace grounds huge, and built loads of mementoes to represent his ideologies. This place was MASSIVE. No way he could find enough time to get use out of all this land otherwise. It was all really well done and really pretty. I loved the random, unique flowers and the huge, well-trimmed trees. The huge well stole the show for me though. The fact we could walk down to the bottom and it connected to a huge cave system was surreal. However, too many people knew about this place and I couldn’t move at my own pace at some points because of the crowds. We probably came a bit too late, ah well, still worth the visit.

Day 23 - Goodbye Mr Frog
Teaching had finally finished. Time for a hike up to Mouros castle! Holy guacamole this place had the best views in Sintra! Views of the coast, Pena and the other White Castle I don’t know the name of! We are naughty though, we didn’t pay. We waited till the guard wasn’t looking, then legged it through the gate. This place delivered! Fewer people, more views, but… more steps. Claire doesn’t like steps. Or any sort of physical exertion. But it was worth it to see the top. This was an amazing day, but also a sad day. Claire has carried a teddy frog around with her for over a year, to remember a surprise holiday to Blackpool she took me on back in 2016. Mr Frog has now done his last trip with us and has started another journey. When Claire jumped off a wall, the frog fell off her bag. At the time we didn’t know this and we retraced our steps to find him. However, the agonising truth was discovered later as we watched the films from that day and witnessed Mr Frogs final moments. Don’t worry though, Mr Frog will live on forever!

Day 24 - How to hire a bike in Sintra
I was SO excited for this day. I love bike riding, it’s one of my favourite things to do. Paired with my other favourite thing to do, seeing stuff! We woke up with high hopes and headed out bright and early! Which is 10am to us. We walked to the first bike rental place and they only rented out E-Bikes. EH NEH. Next place, only advanced bookings. Then we walked to a lovely little place near the train station called Greenwalk. Two lovely guys running a small business. Cheap too, €20 per day. The guys ran through a map and gave us so much information and worked out a route for us. Go pro set up, puncture kit packed, helmets on. Lets set off! Are you ready, Claire?
Zoom! We both zoomed off and started on what would turn out to be an epic adventure! A truly remarkable experience filled with jaw-dropping views. But first, we had already lost each other after 30 seconds of cycling. As navigator, I cycled ahead and expected Claire to be following, but she decided it was best to stay behind and blame me for being too risky.
Ok, now lets set off for real. She was doing so well. I'm an experienced cycler, so naturally I didn't expect Claire to keep up with me, but she was doing! For the first 5 minutes! We had to walk our bikes up most hills and she was so apologetic each time, it was adorable. I didn’t mind at all though, even when I had to walk two bikes!
First stop, Praia da Adraga. I didn't have this planned, however, the guy in the cycle shop recommended it. Let's give it a shot! 12km from the cycle shop to Adraga. And boy was it worth it! The waves were the biggest I have ever seen. Apparently, it was a surfers beach, so kinda expected I guess. But for your average plucky Brits, we were amazed. On to the next one! Cabo da Roca, the most westerly point of mainland Europe. Views? Amazing. Crowds? Absolute carnage. Meh, it’s alright. Cool to say we’ve been to the most westerly point!
This needs its own paragraph. Ursa beach. Was a spectacle. A true representation of why Nature is the Queen of beauty. Hobbled over the beaten track to this ‘Hidden Beach’. Wham. I was hit by one of the most beautiful views I had ever seen in my life. It was a difficult hike down to the beach and we just didn’t have time to go down. So I decided to run down as fast as I could while Claire stayed at the top. This was so worth it. If you go to Portugal, this is a must.
Now, 14km back to the Bike shop and sunset is 2 hours away. Come on Claire, let's get a move on! In the end, we decided my bike was easier to ride so we swapped, and it was mainly downhill so she did really well. Penedo village has some of the best views in Sintra. Bikes dropped off, I was pretty sure Claire's legs were about to fall off.
