Greenwich is now the capital district of what is now officially called the 'Royal Borough of Greenwich' since 2012.
In terms of domes around the world, the Millennium Dome is the biggest. The dome is 365 metres in diameter and 52 metres high with those 12 yellow supporting poles running through it. This represents days, weeks and months of the year.
The Emirates Air Line looks quite slow but it takes 10 minutes to cross the water and they double that speed in rush hour for the commuters.
The Cutty Sark was built in 1869 and sailed from London to Shanghai the next year full of wine, beer and spirit exports.It came back from Shanghai full to the brim with over a million pounds of tea.
The Greenwich Foot Tunnel took 3 years to build from 1899 to 1902. The very industrial steel panel section at the north end of the tunnel is the result of steel repairs after Second World War bomb damage. The tunnel is classed as a public highway which means, by law, it must be kept open 24 hours a day, everyday.
The name Greenwich dates back more than 1100 years. The 'Green' part of the name is self explanatory but the 'nwich' or 'wich' part refers to a 'harbor' or 'trading place'.
Greenwich has a lot of restaurants, markets, pubs, places to see and things to practically do and partake in. Of the 32 London boroughs, there are 4 with royal status. For 80 years there were only 3 but Greenwich was allowed to join the club to become the fourth in 2012 by order of the Queen. Greenwich once tried to apply for city status to become the 'City of Greenwich' but that got refused.
Greenwich is very well connected by transport. There are a lot of bus routes connected by a central bus station, boat services to Central London and 5 different types of train station serving different parts of the district.
Greenwich Park itself has always had 'royal' status along with Green Park and Hyde Park and some others. Some of the trees you can see in the park are over 350 years old.
King Edward the II asked Christopher Wren to design the Royal Observatory for some serious astronomy. They built it in 1675 for £520 and its still the largest telescope in the UK. The 'Public Standards of Length' on the wall in the park physically demonstrate precise lengths from the imperial measurement system.
Before the Observatory, there wasn't really any official, standardised way of measuring time around the world. Over centuries, sailors decided it made sense to sync their clocks to the already established
'Greenwich Mean Time' or 'GMT' which is now just known as Universal Time.

We have a day out in our favourite London park. Greenwich. We check out the park and see the observatory. See the various sundials before going past the National Maritime Museum and onto the deer park. Then we go to Al Panchinos for an amazing lunch and coffee, the first coffee we've had in England with decent latte art ;-)
Afterwards we head to Greenwich Market, The Cutty Sark and then the Thames barrier to finish the day.

London History Walking Tour - Royal Greenwich
One of my favourite day trips in London is to Royal Greenwich - where east meets west and Old historical Royalty meets new modern art and innovation. Greenwich has been at the centre of the world for hundreds of years and you won't want to miss all these lovely places to see.
First there’s the peninsula where you can see modern art by Anthony Gormley, Alex Chinnek and more, stretching all along The Line as far as the Olympic park.
Take a trip up the River Thames to the place where Admiral Lord Nelson’s body was taken after the Battle of Trafalgar, Les Miserables was filmed and the first observatory in England was built by Sir Christopher Wren.
Climb the O2 centre for spectacular views of London or see a global sporting event or music concert inside the dome.
Take an Emirates cable car for wonderful views of the river or visit the Now Gallery for new and innovative art installations. You can even hit a few balls on the driving range or walk by the tree where Queen Elizabeth the first played as a child and King Henry VIII got married.

The meridian line in Greenwich represents the Prime Meridian of the world, Longitude Zero (0° 0' 0). Every place on the Earth is measured in terms of its angle east or west from this line.
The line itself divided the eastern and western hemispheres of the Earth - just as the Equator divides the northern and southern hemispheres.

Greenwich is an area of south east London, England, located 5.5 miles (8.9 km) east-southeast of Charing Cross. It is located within the Royal Borough of Greenwich, to which it lends its name. Greenwich is notable for its maritime history and for giving its name to the Greenwich Meridian (0° longitude) and Greenwich Mean Time. The town became the site of a royal palace, the Palace of Placentia from the 15th century, and was the birthplace of many Tudors, including Henry VIII and Elizabeth I. The palace fell into disrepair during the English Civil War and was rebuilt as the Royal Naval Hospital for Sailors by Sir Christopher Wren and his assistant Nicholas Hawksmoor. These buildings became the Royal Naval College in 1873, and they remained an establishment for military education until 1998 when they passed into the hands of the Greenwich Foundation. The historic rooms within these buildings remain open to the public; other buildings are used by University of Greenwich and Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance. The town became a popular resort in the 18th century and many grand houses were built there, such as Vanbrugh Castle (1717) established on Maze Hill, next to the park. From the Georgian period estates of houses were constructed above the town centre. The maritime connections of Greenwich were celebrated in the 20th century, with the siting of the Cutty Sark and Gipsy Moth IV next to the river front, and the National Maritime Museum in the former buildings of the Royal Hospital School in 1934. Greenwich formed part of Kent until 1889 when the County of London was created.

The Royal Naval College, Greenwich, was founded by an Order in Council dated 16 January 1873. The establishment of its officers consisted of a President, who was always a Flag Officer; a Captain, Royal Navy; a Director of Studies; and Professors of Mathematics, Physical Science, Chemistry, Applied Mechanics, and Fortification. It was to take in officers who were already Sub-Lieutenants and to operate as the university of the Navy.

Things To See And Do In Greenwich, London
Greenwich is one of the most beautiful places in London that you definitely have to visit (…and, a lot of times, probably haven’t even thought of). It’s super easy to get to, packed to the brim with so much fascinating history (like, did you know Henry the 8th was born here? The Royal Palace used to be here once upon a time) and it’s just filled with so many architectural beauties! There are so many reasons why you have to visit Greenwich and we finally got round to exploring this beautiful neighbourhood of London to show you just why!

Greenwich can easily be reached from London in 30 minutes by scenic boat ride on the Thames that brings us past the Houses of Parliament, St Pauls and other highlights of the city. Arriving in Greenwich, the first grand building you see is the Royal Naval College, designed by Christopher Wren, one of the prettiest buildings in England in the Baroque style. Take a stroll in the residential neighborhoods to soak up the Georgian atmosphere of this well-preserved historic town.
