Butler Greenwood Plantation - St. Francisville, Louisiana
morning after an overnight stay at Butler Greenwood Plantation in St. Francisville, Louisiana. Built in the 1770's with up to 400 slaves working cotton and sugarcane at its height. As with all plantations, it feels haunted and blackened by the racist past and confused present of southern culture, but deeply fascinating, undeniably beautiful, and historically imperative to an understanding of the US. The house and cottages are clearly in hard times and in dire need of refurbishment. We were not allowed beyond the rear foyer of the main house unfortunately. The owner, who is direct descendant of the original owners, was as mysterious and damaged as the place - she was polite, but distant and strained to maintain even the basics of back and forth conversation. We almost begged for information or a glimpse into into the house, but she wouldn't engage us on any level. Bizarre. But it fit the whole tone and experience perfectly. Recommend seeing this place before it likely caves in on itself and creates a kind of southern gothic supernova.

Requested by Annie Hernandez.
Rosedown Plantation St. Francisville Louisiana
I have not actually been to the plantation but now it is on my travel wish list! I saw pictures and fell in love. So I made this, my first video ever! I wanted to finally teach myself how to use the video software so I chose this project and now I feel almost like I have been there. This is one of the best things about the internet, you can escape and go anywhere in the world. Enjoy!

A visit to Rosedown, St. Francisville Louisiana
A view of the gardens and grounds of Rosedown (originally a cotton plantation) in St. Francisville LA on April 4th. The house dates from 1834-35. The gardens with their azalea, camellia, hydrangea, rose and box were restored over eight years beginning in 1956, based upon 19th century layouts -- which were said to be the one of the few privately maintained formal gardens of that era. Notice the live oaks and Spanish moss. Now operated by Louisiana Office of State Parks.
