EXECUTION
Almost in the centre of the Grey Abbey graveyard, is a large grave with an imposing stone monument. This monument (1948) was erected by the National Graves Association at Grey Abbey to commemorate seven men executed in 1922 on the Curragh during the Irish Civil War and reinterred here in 1924; Patrick Bagnall (19); Stephen White (19); Jackie Johnson (18), Patrick Nolan (24), Patrick Mangan (22), James Connor
(24), Brian Moore (37). The date on the monument reads 18 December 1922 though the executions actually took place on 19 December. It was the single biggest execution of Irishmen by Irishmen during the conflict.
The 'Rathbride Column,’ who were part of the Irregular, or Anti-Treaty forces, had been in operation along the railway line near Kildare. They were captured in a dug-out at Mooresbridge near the Curragh Racecourse with a considerable cache of arms. Their Intelligence Officer, Thomas Behan, from Rathangan, was possibly killed on the spot though official reports say he was killed trying to escape from the Glasshouse prison on the Curragh.

Taghadoe Round Tower, County Kildare, Ireland
There are more than 60 round towers still in existence in Ireland.
These structures can be over 30m in height and date between the 900s and 1100s usually.
They primarily served as bell towers, and the Irish name literally translates as bell house.
Taghadoe is one of County Kildare's five round towers and was probably never finished having reached a height of 20m; the roof was not put in to place.
A church from the mid-19th century is situated right beside the round tower and it has some interesting architectural features.

Mount Stewart is an 19th-century house and garden in County Down, Northern Ireland, owned by the National Trust. Situated on the east shore of Strangford Lough, a few miles outside the town of Newtownards and near Greyabbey, it was the Irish seat of the Vane-Tempest-Stewart family, Marquesses of Londonderry. The house and its contents reflect the history of the Vane-Tempest-Stewart family, who played a leading role in British and Irish social and political life.

Christ Church of Ireland Carrowdore
I was down at Carrowdore filming Ulster Poet Lous MacNeice's grave but I couldn't resist filming this wee 1863 church too. Christ Church, Carrowdore, the Church on the Hill, is located on the Woburn Road, about one mile out of Carrowdore village. It’s easily seen, with its spire standing tall, from all approaches to Carrowdore.
I note that there is a history of Christ Church Carrowdore 'the Wee Church on the Hill' Paperback – 1994 by Susan E. Pack Beresford
