Places to visit in Edinburgh, Scotland. Greyfriars Bobby
Over 160 years ago, a wee Skye Terrier was about to become the most famous dog in Scotland’s history. Greyfriars Bobby is a remarkable story, and a heart warming tale.
On 15th February 1858, in the city of Edinburgh, Scotland, a local man named John Gray died of tuberculosis. Gray was better known as “Auld Jock”, and on his death he was buried in old Greyfriars Churchyard. Bobby, a wee Skye Terrier, belonged to John, who worked for the Edinburgh City Police as a night watchman, and the two of them had been virtually inseparable for approximately two years.
Bobby led his master’s funeral procession to the grave at Greyfriars Cemetery, and later, when he tried to stay at the graveside, he was sent away by the caretaker. But the little dog returned and refused to leave, whatever the weather conditions. Despite the combined efforts of the keeper of the Kirkyard, Auld Jock’s family and some of the local people, Bobby refused to be enticed away from the grave for any length of time, and he touched the hearts of the local residents. Although dogs were not allowed in the graveyard, the people rallied round and built a shelter for Bobby and there he stayed, guarding Auld Jock.
As the firing of the one o’clock gun sounded from Edinburgh Castle each day, he would leave his post, and run to the eating house which he had frequented with Auld Jock, and then he would return to Jock’s grave. The news of Bobby’s loyalty soon spread, and people would travel from far and wide to see him. Crowds would gather for the firing of the gun, to see him run for his midday meal. In 1867, the Lord Provost of Edinburgh presented Bobby with a new collar, which is now on display. The collar has a brass plate inscribed with the words….
Bobby was well cared for by the people of Edinburgh, but he still remained loyal to his master, and he continued to stay faithfully guarding Auld Jock’s grave for all those years, until he died on January 14th 1872, aged 16 years. Bobby was also buried in Greyfriars Kirkyard, just seventy five yards away from his masters grave. He has his very own red granite headstone, which was unveiled by His Royal Highness The Duke of Gloucester CCVO, in 1981.

A King's match in America: King Richard III - J1C2C3
June 2017 Presentation to the Explorers Club: In February of 2014, David Brinkman's full sequence mtDNA test showed him to have an undocumented Mitochondrial DNA set. His DNA record was used to create the new mtDNA haplogroup J1c2c3. Nine months later, a full sequence mtDNA test was completed on the new found bones of King Richard III. There was an exact match and King Richard III became the second documented member of J1c2c3. This launched an effort on both sides of the Atlantic to discover the relation and migration that has occurred over the last 530 years between Richard III and Brinkiman's maternal line in the United States. After 3 years, the J1c2c3 group has proven to be extremely rare suggesting that the mutation that defines this group probably occurred recently in the Plantagenet family between 600 to 1000 years ago. This has opened up a unique opportunity for science and genetic genealogy.
Just prior to the presentation, the short video Richard III: The Parking Lot King was shown. This introduces Michael Ibsen whose partial mtDNA sequence was used in the initial proof showing the bones were that of King Richard III. This video is available on YouTube at:

Greyfriars and Blackfriars (In Our Time)
Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss the religious orders of the Dominicans and the Franciscans, known as the Blackfriars and Greyfriars. Just as it is better to light up others than to shine alone, it is better to share the fruits of one's contemplation with others than to contemplate in solitude. Thus St Thomas Aquinas described his vocation, not only as a teacher, but also as a Dominican friar and philosopher at the University of Paris. In the 13th century, the religious orders of the Dominicans and the Franciscans were a great force for change in Catholic Europe. They thrived in the emerging towns and cities of the High Middle Ages, leading crusades and changing the way the Church dealt with heretics. They were the evangelists who transformed the Church's preaching of the Christian message to the people. On top of all this, these two orders were also responsible for reconciling Classical and Christian philosophy; their studies of Aristotle paved the way for the Renaissance. They also managed to change the curriculum at the universities of Paris and Oxford. But the Blackfriars and the Greyfriars did not come from the great monasteries of the time; they started out as itinerant preachers surviving upon the charity of the faithful. So how did these two orders come to dominate the spiritual and academic life of the 13th century, and how did they manage to accumulate such huge wealth while professing allegiance to lives of poverty? With Henrietta Leyser, medieval historian and Fellow of St Peter's College, Oxford; Alexander Murray, medieval historian and Emeritus Fellow of University College, Oxford; Anthony Kenny, philosopher and former Master of Balliol College, Oxford.
