The Griffith Observatory is a facility in Los Angeles, California, sitting on the south-facing slope of Mount Hollywood in Los Angeles' Griffith Park. It commands a view of the Los Angeles Basin, including Downtown Los Angeles to the southeast, Hollywood to the south, and the Pacific Ocean to the southwest. The observatory is a popular tourist attraction with a close view of the Hollywood Sign and an extensive array of space and science-related displays. Admission has been free since the observatory's opening in 1935, in accordance with the will of Griffith J. Griffith, the benefactor after whom the observatory is named.
On December 16, 1896, 3,015 acres (12.20 km2) of land surrounding the observatory was donated to the City of Los Angeles by Griffith J. Griffith. In his will Griffith donated funds to build an observatory, exhibit hall, and planetarium on the donated land. Griffith's objective was to make astronomy accessible by the public, as opposed to the prevailing idea that observatories should be located on remote mountaintops and restricted to scientists.
Griffith drafted detailed specifications for the observatory. In drafting the plans, he consulted with Walter Adams, the future director of Mount Wilson Observatory, and George Ellery Hale, who founded (with Andrew Carnegie) the first astrophysical telescope in Los Angeles.
As a Works Progress Administration (WPA) project, construction began on June 20, 1933, using a design developed by architect John C. Austin based on preliminary sketches by Russell W. Porter. The observatory and accompanying exhibits were opened to the public on May 14, 1935, as the country's third planetarium. In its first five days of operation the observatory logged more than 13,000 visitors. Dinsmore Alter was the museum's director during its first years.
The building combines Greek and Beaux-Arts influences, and the exterior is embellished with the Greek key pattern.
During World War II the planetarium was used to train pilots in celestial navigation. The planetarium was again used for this purpose in the 1960s to train Apollo program astronauts for the first lunar missions.

I made this trip in March, 2016. Video shot with a Brinno TLC-200 Pro time-lapse camera, mounted on my roof with a homemade magnetic case. I travel with two Brinno cameras - one facing forward, the other in reverse. Sometimes the reverse camera captures better video (fewer raindrops and bugs hit the rear-view lens).

Los Angeles 4K - Griffith Park - Driving Downtown USA
The Griffith Observatory is a popular tourist attraction with an excellent view of the Hollywood Sign and an extensive array of space and science-related displays. It is located in the largest park in Los Angeles, California, sitting on the south-facing slope of Mount Hollywood in Los Angeles' Griffith Park. It commands a view of the Los Angeles Basin, including Downtown Los Angeles to the southeast, Hollywood to the south, and the Pacific Ocean to the southwest. Admission has been free since the observatory's opening in 1935, in accordance with the will of Griffith J. Griffith, the benefactor after whom the observatory is named.
Griffith Park is a large municipal park at the eastern end of the Santa Monica Mountains, in the Los Feliz neighborhood of Los Angeles, California. The park covers 4,310 acres (1,740 ha) of land, making it one of the largest urban parks in North America. It is the second-largest city park in California, after Mission Trails Preserve in San Diego, and the 11th largest municipally owned park in the United States. It has also been referred to as the Central Park of Los Angeles but is much larger, more untamed, and rugged than its New York City counterpart.
Los Angeles is the second-most populous city in the United States, after New York City, and the most populous city in the Western United States. With an estimated population of four million, Los Angeles is the largest and most populous city in the state of California and the cultural, financial, and commercial center of Southern California. Nicknamed the City of Angels partly because of its name's Spanish meaning, Los Angeles is known for its Mediterranean climate, ethnic diversity, and sprawling metropolis.

Griffith Observatory Experience | Los Angeles, CA
I've wanted to come to the Griffith Observatory for a long time, even though I didn't know anything about it. I really just thought it was a cool building on a hill with a great view of LA and the Hollywood Sign (that was more than enough for me). But it was SOO COOL!
The building houses a wealth of educational exhibitions, most having something to do with the solar system, from tides to how stars work. The whole place is fascinating.
That pendulum thing at 0:22 constantly swings in the same direction, but the earth under it spins throughout the day, so it appears to change directions.
The Tesla coil demo was super cool. The guy explained how the coil worked and what Tesla's plan was to offer electricity for free to everyone.

Griffith Observatory Los Angeles Tour (HD)
During our recent trip to LA, we made sure to visit the Griffith Observatory. It is a very popular tourist attraction spot as it admissions is free, and parking is difficult to get nearby- we had to park about 1/2 a mile down the hill. The walk up as you can see in the video provided some beautiful views of Los Angeles from the Griffith Park area. The observatory itself was such a great learning experience for the kids, or anyone who enjoy astronomy. If you are a romantic, we were able to capture a beautiful sunset from the grounds of the observatory at 6:47. The Pendulum at the Griffith Observatory is shown at 2:11. One of the coolest parts is where it shows you the size of our Sun vs other notable stars. Another was the area where it shows your weight on different plants such as Mars and Jupiter.
Enjoy!

Travel Los Angeles, California - The Griffith Observatory
Take a tour of Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles, United States -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
When most people think of seeing stars in L.A., their minds jump to celebrities.
Really, though, the best place for star-gazing in Los Angeles is the Griffith Observatory.
Colonel Griffith J. Griffith donated both land and money for the observatory in his will.
Construction began in 1933, and the complex opened in 1935 and was immediately swamped by visitors.
The vast observatory includes telescopes and a planetarium.
This facility is an important piece of history as Apollo astronauts learned celestial navigation here.
The Griffith Observatory has plenty of exhibits that will appeal to visitors of all ages.

Amazing place! Although it is usually packed with people, the experience is definitely worth it! There's not only the beautiful night view of downtown Los Angeles, they also have a museum and a theater show about astronomy. I strongly recommend this place if you're looking for adventure and a place that has an amazing view.
