PORT FAIRY - Griffiths Island Walk - Victoria.
Griffiths Island, sometimes incorrectly spelled as Griffith Island or Griffitts Island, lies at the mouth of the Moyne River next to, and within the bounds of, the town of Port Fairy, in the Western District of the state of Victoria in Australia.
Visit Griffiths Island, with its colony of shearwater seabirds, winding pathways and the spectacular lighthouse at the eastern tip, is a great place to explore.
The island is about 1.5 kilometres long and 0.8 kilometres wide at its widest point. It is bordered on its northern side by the Moyne River, which has been channeled between stone 'training walls' and provides easy access by sea to the port of Port Fairy. Originally a cluster of three separate islands – Goat, Rabbit and Griffiths – harbour works have consolidated them into a single island which protects the mouth of the Moyne and shelters Port Fairy Bay.
It is named after John Griffiths, an entrepreneur and merchant from Launceston in northern Tasmania.
From the mid 1830s until 1843 the island served as a base for a bay whaling station for Southern Right Whales, until the supply of whales was exhausted and the industry went into terminal decline. Some shipbuilding also took place during the 1840s. The abandoned whaling station buildings were later used until 1854 by Flora Dunlop, widow of Victorian politician Alexander Dunlop, as a ‘mission’ for young Aborigines. Because of its historic and archaeological significance, the island has been listed on the Victorian Heritage Register.
There is a large breeding colony of short-tailed shearwaters, locally known as ‘muttonbirds’, with an estimated 100,000 burrows (of which probably fewer than half are occupied during the September–April breeding season).
Griffiths Island has been reserved as public land since 30 April 1902 with Moyne Shire Council (formerly the Borough of Port Fairy) the Committee of Management since 11 June 1902.

UAV Griffiths Island in Port Fairy (Vic, Australia)
Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are everywhere these days. They revolutionize sport, media, entertainment and industry. They also revolutionize coastal research as they provide the unique opportunity to map extents of the shoreline at ultra-high resolution, within minutes, and for a fraction of the cost of an aerial/LIDAR survey. A particular interest is these systems' capability to reconstruct the 3D terrain in high resolution through photogrammetry allowing researchers to monitor canopy, sediment erosion, seasonal changes, etc.
Griffiths Island was the pilot survey to test the new UAV built by Victorian UAS Training ( for Deakin University's Geospatial Research Group. The survey was undertaken on a beautiful summer day, 4th of March 2014. The UAV is based on a X8 frame and photos are obtained from a Sony NEX-5. Data shown are the result of pre-processing with Pix4Dmapper (

Griffith Island Port Fairy
Port Fairy Lighthouse
Port Fairy Lighthouse.
This small island now has no permanent inhabitants, but is connected to the mainland by a causeway and is accessible on foot. The Griffiths Island Lighthouse was built in 1859 as a navigation aid at a time when Port Fairy was an important trading port for western Victoria. The lighthouse was initially manned by two keepers. The last keeper to live on the island was there from 1929 to 1954, when the light was automated; the two stone keepers’ cottages were subsequently demolished in about 1956.
We went out several times to the lighthouse, both walking and on bikes. There are two tracks to the lighthouse, a short one, and a long one. The old one goes around the south and eastern sides of the island past all the birds that nest on the island. The information centre told us that the birds are struggling to survive given water temperatures had changed and the fish are apparently deeper in the ocean - unfortunately the birds couldn’t dive down deep to get them. So since we didn’t think this was a good idea to show our children, we took the shorter route that goes along the north part of the island. One day we counted heaps of small black wallaby’s, were other times we didn’t see any. We also saw an echidna one day.
However the most exiting visit was when the lighthouse was open and we could go in and up it. It was great to be able to climb the same stairs as the lighthouse keeper did back in 1859. We saw the old and the new replaced light also. Below if some of the pictures we took on this visit.
As a family we enjoy exploring Australia. This is a small trip we did in January 2020 to Western Victoria, Australia. More details can be seen at

Weltreise Vlog Teil 53 /08.02.+09.02.2019 Graham Husson/Port Fairy/Griffith Island/Great Ocean Road
