As seen on SkyEye Britain - LAUNCHING IN EARLY 2013! - skyeye-app.com
This is the site of a Neolithic flint mine, which may well go back to 3000 BC. It was named Grim's Graben much later by the Saxons, after their god Grim, and 'graben', meaning quarries. It is possible to climb down one of the shafts, and is the only one of its kind open to the public in the UK.
Grimes Graves, Norfolk UK
Grimes Graves is a complex of Neolithic flint mines used between 3000 to 1900 BC. The flint was used in tools, like axes, before metal was readily available. All but a few of the mines are filled-in which leaves the area looking like a WWll carpet bombing site.

This incredible series of mines was created around 3.5 - four thousand years ago with the purpose of mining flint.
The scale of this undertaking is undoubtedly industrial and would have required something like what today we consider to be capitalism. Yet next to nothing is known about it.
Located near Thetford in Norfolk, the site is administered by English Heritage.
I have a wide range of interests and I think that this is reflected in the films which can be seen here.

We Climb Down into Prehistoric Grime's Graves!
We visit the neolithic mines in Norfolk, Grime's Graves.
The grassy lunar landscape of 400 pits was first named Grim’s Graves by the Anglo-Saxons. It was not until one of them was excavated in 1870 that they were identified as flint mines dug over 5,000 years ago.
We also descend by ladder into one of the excavated shafts to see the jet-black flint.
Set amid the distinctive Breckland heath landscape, Grime’s Graves is also a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a habitat for rare plants and fauna.

Grimes Graves Flythrough
Grime's Graves is the only Neolithic flint mine open to visitors in Britain. This grassy lunar landscape of 400 pits was first named Grim's Graves by the Anglo-Saxons. It was not until one of them was excavated in 1870 that they were identified as flint mines dug over 5,000 years ago.
Plowman Craven used Laser scanning technology to accurately survey the mine, and create a 3D flythrough of the site. The lighting in the flythrough shows the further the miners went into the tunnels, the darker it became, as the natural light from the main shaft faded.
