Russia: meteorite 15.2.2013
Chelyabinsk Ural
February 15, 2013
---
A flash of bright light, the sound of explosions -- what witnesses report and cameras captured as a meteor broke apart as it entered the Earth's atmosphere above Chelyabinsk in central Russia.
In the aftermath, a meteor shower that injured nearly 1,000 people, set off car alarms and disrupted the mobile phone network.
Describing what happened, the head of the region's emergencies ministry Yuri Burenko said:
In the sky over the city of Chelyabinsk an object was spotted which flew through the air at high speed leaving a trace in the sky.
Two minutes later three consecutive explosions were heard, and the resulting impact wave smashed windows in the city of Chelyabinsk and neighbouring cities.
Part of the meteor raced across the horizon, leaving a long trail of white smoke behind it which could be seen 200 kilometres away in Russia's fourth-largest city, Yekaterinburg.
I saw something moving in the sky, in a moment there came a flash -- we first thought it was fireworks, but a moment later we saw a trace as if from a rocket, followed by an explosion in couple of minutes. The window broke ... tea , bread, water -- everything was on the ground, said one resident of Chelyabinsk.
A number of buildings have been damaged in Chelyabinsk, 1,500 kilometres east of Moscow. Six hundred square metres of the roof on a zinc factory collapsed.
Chelyabinsk is a city and the administrative center of Chelyabinsk Oblast, Russia, located in the northwest of the oblast, 210 kilometers south of Yekaterinburg, just to the east of the Ural Mountains, ... Wikipedia

On 15 February 2013 at about 9:20 a.m. local time (0320 GMT), a meteor flew over the Ural Mountains causing explosions and reportedly injuring more than 900 people. Fragments of it fell into an area of the Chelyabinsk region. Interior Ministry spokesman Vadim Kolesnikov said 1100 people had called for medical assistance following the incident, mostly for treatment of injuries from glass broken by the explosions. Kolsenikov also said about 600 square meters (6,000 square feet) of a roof at a zinc factory had collapsed. A spokeswoman for the Emergency Ministry told the Associated Press that there was a meteor shower, but another ministry spokeswoman was quoted by the Interfax news agency as saying it was a single meteorite.

Russia: Russian arrested for joining militants in Syria returns home
An interview with a Russian citizen who went to fight alongside anti-government militants in Syria was released, Friday.
Shams ad-Din, from Grozny, left his family to go to Syria. He spent four months in a village called Atma but said that there “was a lot of injustice, there was no justice.”
Ad-Din was convicted and spent half a year in prison, he now remains under police vigilance.
SOT, Raisa, mother of a former militant, (Russian): We left this place as IDPs and when we came back, everything was destroyed.
SOT, Raisa, mother of a former militant, (Russian): We did not even think he was there, because I thought he could not do that.
SOT, Shams ad-Din, former militant, (Russian): There were rumors that civilians were humiliated, tortured, killed. There were videos. So we watched those videos and went there. I spent there four months. There was a village Atma. I left quietly. There was a lot of injustice, there was no justice.
SOT, Officer of Centre for Combatting Extremism (Russian): Our department is dedicated to combating extremism in the information environment. We identify accounts in messengers, social networks by means of personal investigation. That is, operational staff communicates with people and establishes a trusting relationship with them, sometimes for half a year, a year. So participate in so called dormant cells. Finding out who how what why, who communicates with them, who finances them, who transmits the money and before the crime is committed, the group is exposed.

A meteor crashing in Russia's Ural mountains has injured at least 950 people, as the shockwave blew out windows and rocked buildings.
Most of those hurt, in the Chelyabinsk region where the meteor fell, suffered cuts and bruises but at least 46 remain in hospital.
A fireball streaked through the clear morning sky, followed by loud bangs.
President Vladimir Putin said he thanked God no big fragments had fallen in populated areas.
A large meteor fragment landed in a lake near Chebarkul, a town in Chelyabinsk region.
The meteor's dramatic passing was witnessed in Yekaterinburg, 200km (125 miles) to the north, and in Kazakhstan, to the south.

A huge line of smoke, like you get from a plane but many times bigger

Chelyabinsk resident
Eyewitness accounts
It was quite extraordinary, Chelyabinsk resident Polina Zolotarevskaya told BBC News. We saw a very bright light and then there was a kind of a track, white and yellow in the sky.
The explosion was so strong that some windows in our building and in the buildings that are across the road and in the city in general, the windows broke.
Officials say a large meteor partially burned up in the lower atmosphere, resulting in fragments falling earthwards.
Thousands of rescue workers have been dispatched to the area to provide help to the injured, the emergencies ministry said.
The Chelyabinsk region, about 1,500km (930 miles) east of Moscow, is home to many factories, a nuclear power plant and the Mayak atomic waste storage and treatment centre.
'Blinding
Chelyabinsk's health department said 985 people had sought medical treatment, including 204 children, Russia's Interfax news agency reports. Two people in the town of Kopeysk were in a serious condition, it added.
The governor of Chelyabinsk region, Mikhail Yurevich, was quoted elsewhere as saying 950 people had been hurt, two seriously.

Asteroids, meteors and meteorites
Asteroids are small bodies that orbit the Sun as the Earth does
Larger asteroids are called planetoids or minor planets, smaller ones often called meteoroids
Once any of these enters our planet's atmosphere, it becomes a meteor
Many meteors break into pieces or burn up entirely as they speed through the atmosphere
Once meteors or fragments actually impact the surface, they become meteorites
Q&A: Asteroid impacts
Can we know about every rock?
Mr Putin promised immediate aid for people affected, saying kindergartens and schools had been damaged, and work disrupted at industrial enterprises.
Many children were at lessons when the meteor fell at around 09:20 (03:20 GMT).
Video posted online showed frightened, screaming youngsters at one Chelyabinsk school, where corridors were littered with broken glass.
Chelyabinsk resident Sergei Serskov told BBC News the city had felt like a war zone for 20 to 30 minutes.
I was in the office when suddenly I saw a really bright flash in the window in front of me, he said.
Then I smelt fumes. I looked out the window and saw a huge line of smoke, like you get from a plane but many times bigger.
A few minutes later the window suddenly came open and there was a huge explosion, followed by lots of little explosions.
In Yekaterinburg, 36-year-old resident Viktor Prokofiev was driving to work when he witnessed the event.
It was quite dark, but it suddenly became as bright as if it was day, he was quoted by Reuters as saying.
I felt like I was blinded by headlights.
Debris also reportedly fell on the west Siberian region of Tyumen.
Governor Yurevich reported that the meteor had landed in a lake 1km outside Chebarkul, which has a population of 46,000.
A Russian army spokesman said a crater 6m (20ft) wide had been found on the shore of the lake.
Meteor falls in Russia on 15/02/2013
From RT:
The Russian Urals region has been stricken by a sudden cosmic attack. Unidentified flying objects exploded over several major cities, including Chelyabinsk, where the blast waves blew out windows and disrupted mobile connections.
The Emergency Ministry said the incident was caused by a shower of meteorite debris. Unconfirmed reports suggested that a meteorite was shot down by Russian air defenses. Multiple dashboard videos appeared online, showing huge fireballs flying over buildings and exploding with a strong blast. A local zinc factory was the worst-hit, with some of its walls collapsed.
Fireball explosion wreaks havoc across region.
'Shock and frustration': Locals report on meteorite crash in Russian Urals (VIDEO)

9:07 GMT: The object could be about a meter in diameter and weigh a few tons, said Valeriy Shuvalov of the Institute of Geosphere Dynamics. As it entered the atmosphere, it broke into a cloud of pieces that flew on, creating a blast wave and emitting light. That's where the flashes came from, as well as broken windows. Most of the object's material evaporated, the remaining pieces slowed down and fell. It was most likely of iron nature as it penetrated so far through the atmosphere. However, we still don't have the exact data on the debris.
8:56 GMT: The Chelyabinsk regional governor reported that an emergency team discovered that a meteorite fell into a lake near the town of Chebarkul.
8:49 GMT: The number of people requesting medical assistance has risen to 500.
8:30 GMT: Residents of Chelyabinsk buy out plastic wrap to screen the windows blown off by the meteor shower blast wave, as temperatures are expected to fall to -14°C at night.
8:20 GMT: More than 400 people have requested medical attention for minor injuries after a meteor shower hit the Russian Urals region. The number of injured may change, police said.

CCTV cameras register the moment of explosion
8:10 GMT: Oleg Malkov, an aerospace scientist at Moscow State University, told Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper that the meteorite went undetected by space scanners, likely because it was coming from the direction of the Sun. We can only register stones coming from the direction of the night sky, he explained. Malkov confirmed that the meteor shower in the Urals was not connected to the 2012DA14 asteroid that will approach Earth in a few hours.
8:03 GMT:Up to 250 injured, 3 in critical condition after meteorite hits
7:46 GMT: Ekaterinburg's observatory has officially deemed the incident a fireball meteor shower. No evacuations were called for, and radiation levels were determined to be normal.
7:40 GMT: Vice Premier Dmitry Rogozin wrote on Twitter that he will offer suggestions to Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev on how to prevent or mitigate meteorite damage in future.
7:30 GMT: The number of people seeking medical attention has risen to 150.
