On the shores of Lake Mälaren, Gripsholm Castle towers powerfully and fairytale-like over the idyllic small town of Mariefred in Södermanland. Gripsholm is known as Gustav Vasa's castle, as it was he who built the castle here in 1537.

At Gripsholm you can take a royal stroll around the romantic castle grounds or meet the royal deer at the Hjorthagen nature reserve.

Mariefred with Gripsholm Castle

Gripsholm slottet, the Gripsholm castle is situated at Lake Mälaren in the small city of Mariefred. It is not that far away from Stockholm. Of course it's one of the castles belonging to the Swedish Royal family.
I was just able to shoot some picture from the outside as we then had to carry on our way to the next city in Sweden. Again there was a lot of rain and a sky coated in full bright grey light. Wähh! Better go there in sunshine if you have the choice.
In general, the outside parc area is quite cool and cozy - I haven't visited the interior apartments, but what I liked best was the dark castle basement. You will find there a souvenir shop - I know, nothing special, but the way down the stairs and dark underground light has something special.

In English:
Construction of this Renaissance castle began more than 450 years ago. Gripsholm contains furniture, handicrafts and interiors from four centuries.
Highlights include Gustav III’s theatre and the Swedish National Portrait collection. During the summer the steamer Mariefred operates on the route Stadshuskajen - Mariefred - maintaining its original route since 100 years, still with the original steam engine.
Now the castle is a museum which is open to the public, containing paintings and works of art.
Part of the castle houses the National Portrait Gallery (Statens porträttsamlingar), one of the oldest portrait collections in the world.

While i was visiting my friend Petra in Sweden in January, we were lucky enough to get a tour of Gripsholms Castle in Mariefred. While unfortunately i lost half of my footage, i was able to salvage some of the highlights of the castle and Petra and I being cheeky.
