Kelowna is a city on Okanagan Lake in the Okanagan Valley,
in the southern interior of British Columbia, Canada.
It serves as the head office of the Regional District
of Central Okanagan. Its name derives from an
Okanagan language term for grizzly ear.
Kelowna is the third largest metropolitan area
in the province and ranks as the 22nd largest in Canada,
with a population of 179,839 in 2011. It is the largest city
in BC that is not located on the coast.
Nearby communities include the district municipality of West Kelowna (also referred to as Westbank, Westside) to the west across Okanagan Lake, Lake Country and Vernon to the north, as well as Peachland to the southwest and, further to the south, Summerland and Penticton.
Father Charles M. Pandosy, a French Roman Catholic Oblate missionary, arriving in 1859 was the first European to settle at Kelowna, a place named L'anse au sable (Bay of Sand) in reference to the sandy shoreline. Kelowna was officially incorporated in May 4, 1905.
In May 2005, Kelowna celebrated its Centennial. In the same year, new five lane William R. Bennett Bridge began construction to replace the three lane Okanagan Lake Bridge. It was part of a plan to alleviate traffic problems experienced during the summer tourist season, when the influx of tourists adds to the commuters between West Kelowna and Kelowna. The new bridge was completed in 2008.
Central City is the sector near the Harvey Avenue from the Okanagan Lake to Highway 33, comprising the city's major business and commercial centres, such as Downtown, Capri, Landmark and Midtown.
Downtown is located by the Okanagan Lake. Multiple beaches, parks, restaurants and stores are located near the waterfront and Bernard Avenue. The cultural district within downtown is home to art galleries, museums, sports arenas and several government offices including the law courts and city hall.

Bears a real problem in the Okanagan Valley
Bears can really rip into a vineyard. As a result we have been putting up posts to stop them coming through the fence. In the middle of summer when little food is around, I guess the grapes are just too tempting. They pulled out a pull and went right under the fence. Crazy strong.
Kelowna Mountain Bridges Planting Vineyards for Wine Cave Tastings
KelownaNow reporter Lauren Hjalmarson visited Kelowna Mountain Bridges and Vineyards to see what makes this agri-park one of the Okanagan's most beautiful tourist attractions. While she was there, she interviewed park managers to find out about future plans for Kelowna Mountain's unique and exciting wine cave and the ice wines that will be produced for on-site tastings. Watch the video to see why you might want to visit Kelowna Mountain Bridges and Vineyards yourself!

One night at Ricardo's
We met Sue and Ricardo, owner operators of Ricardos Mediterranean Kitchen in Winfield BC on Wednesday. We returned Thursday night and you could have knocked me over with a feather. This place was packed. We talked with several customers and nothing but praise was said. Quality, value, service, atmosphere and a friendly environment does work. What a novel approach.
One last thing, homeowners on shows like 'House Hunters' are always looking for homes with large modern kitchens, with an Island if possible. They need space for cooking. The Kitchen where Ricardo performs his magic is perhaps 4 feet wide by 12 feet long, so it goes to show that it's not the size of your kitchen that counts, it's the love of cooking.
Gordon Ramsey, the challenge, should you except, is spend a busy night in this kitchen preparing several hundred dishes, then you will know a real Hell Kitchen.

Wild Okanagan: Elk in Early Spring
Filmed these Okanagan elk yesterday. Most ungulates spend the winter in the timber where the snow isn't as deep and there is more food available, including evergreen needles and moss as well as shrubs and bushes. Now that the weather is warming, I call it spring green up, these elk are taking advantage of the fresh green grass shoots on the open hills! Wild Fun Fact: Elk have Ivory Canine Teeth, these teeth are located on the upper jaw near the front. Elk are the only North American animal, aside from the walrus, that have ivory canines!
Kelowna Wine Country Half Marathon
The Kelowna Wine Country Half Marathon takes place in Kelowna, British Columbia in the Okanagan Valley. As part of a series of 'boutique' destination running races held in scenic wine regions that are complemented by wine, food and entertainment activities.
This wine region is set amongst beautiful mountains and lakes, with abundant sunshine and ideal growing conditions for many premium wine varietals. Whether you're a novice or experienced runner, you'll love this scenic half marathon course starting on the East Bench above Kelowna at Vibrant Vines Winery with magnificent views of Okanagan Lake.
