Iceland Vlog: Day 6 (Hverir, Grjotagja Cave, Hverfjall Crater, Myvatn Lake & Nature Baths)
Welcome to day 6 of our amazing Iceland trip!
Day 6:
- We spent the first part of the morning doing some washing and general camping stuff.
- Then we headed off to Hverir (a spectacular area of mud pots, fumaroles and sulphur deposits) we climbed Namafjall Mountain to get the amazing views of the surrounding area.
- We went on to our next spot, the great Grjotagja cave, and climbed down inside, there is a hot river pool there, but it is a bit too hot to bathe in.
- Then we went to Hverfjall volcano crater and walked up to the top, the views are amazing and the crater is immense.
- After that we headed to Dimmuborgir, an area of volcanic rock formations, where there are paths to walk through the lava field.
Just a 10 min drive away from all of the above is the famous Myvatn Lake, which is well known for its annoying mosquitos, but we were lucky, as there weren´t any around. We went to a few lookout areas but our favourites were Hofdi and Skutustadagigar.
- Our final stop was the Myvatn Nature Baths, naturally heated thermal pools with brilliant views of the lake, it was quite expensive, 40 euros per person, but a great way to end the day and a typical Iceland experience.

Hverfjall / Hverfell volcano near Myvatn lake and Grjotagja cave in Iceland - drone aerial
Just five minutes drive from the lake Myvath is one of the most famous in the world of circular craters - Hverfjall volcano.
Hverfjall volcano is high at 452 m asl and 1,030 meters wide. This type of circular craters are rare in the whole world. Practically perfect a round shape is disturbed by the landslide, which was founded on its southern edge, most likely during the eruption. The outbreak has covered the volcanic dust and small terfrą whole area of Myvatn
Hverfjall also called Hverfell, now is considered to be extinct, the last eruption took place here about 2500 years ago. Climbing the volcano we will see a beautiful and diverse panorama, just look in the opposite direction to feel like we were in a completely different place. Particularly noteworthy Dimmuborgir (isl. Dark city). Fancifully black rock formations were formed about 2,000 years ago by lava flowing from the surrounding craters. The most famous is the cave Kirkjan (isl. Church). According to folk beliefs in Dimmuborgir appeared elves, trolls, and even creatures of evil.
During the colonization of the island, magma flowing from Svortuborgir located on the southern end of the mountain Namafjall almost completely surrounded the volcano. At the same time there was an explosion on the slopes Dalfall.
Following the route 848, you will reach the parking lot at the foot of the volcano, which leads straight trail finish its peak. Entering the crater is also possible with the other party, but the route is difficult. Climbing takes 10 to 20 minutes depending on the condition. A giant crater can walk around, available only to its bed measuring 140 meters. Full excursion along circling the crater should not take longer than 90 minutes.

Grjótagjá Cave in Iceland (Game of Thrones film location), Canon S100 and 5D Mk II test
Grjótagjá Cave is in the Mývatn area on road 860. You can access it from the ring road 1 by driving south. Alternatively, for a more rustic route, you can take 860 eastward from road 848 which is right outside the Vogafjós Cowshed Cafe and nearby camping area. Be sure to close the gate behind you if you take this latter route.

Grjótagjá Cave near Lake Myvatn, Iceland - Jon Snow & Ygritte's Secret Hideaway
Here is a brief video that I took of Vlad and I while in the beautiful Grjótagjá cave. It is located near Dimmu Borgir at Lake Myvatn in Iceland. Filmed in late May 2016.
Hverir and Grjótagjá Fisure (Iceland)
The Earth is at its boiling, steaming worst in the Hverir geothermal area. Pools of bubbling mud, strange rock piles like mini-volcanoes relentlessly belching steam, and a nearly unbearable stink of sulfur… just the kind of place we humans love! What’s wrong with us? Why should busloads of tourists seek out this seething little park near Mývatn?
It must be the novelty. Places like Hverir aren’t going to bring us to tears with their glorious beauty, but it’s fun to see another, darker side of our planet. And I suppose there’s a kind of beauty to be found here as well.
Hidden in a canyon of lava stones difficult and dangerous to reach for those who are not used to, there is a hot spring of clear blue water waiting for you. The place is like a hidden forgotten paradise on Earth. At times it gets really full of locals who use to go there to bath and drink in company. Sometimes they enlight candles in it, making the atmosphere even more magic. They say young Icelanders are allowed to get down there only when they are teenagers, and imagining the adventure that means at that age makes you feel jealous of them.
Tourists are not allowed. The place is in a private property whose landlord has allowed locals to bath in it. Only locals. No tourists please. That’s what makes this place special. It is still a place where you can find the pure Iceland.
Dettifoss - Selfoss waterfalls - Grjotagja cave
Dettifoss is the most powerful waterfall in Europe, and is a waterfall in Vatnajökull National Park in Northeast Iceland.
Selfoss is a smaller waterfall a little way upstream with a drop of 10 m. There are easy paths from Dettifoss, which allow a pleasant 1 km walk.
Perhaps Dettifoss so wild and fierce was befitting of an area that just screamed natural and raw as it flowed on the glacial river Jökulsá á Fjöllum meandering through Iceland's version of the Grand Canyon - Jökulsárgljúfur.
Grjotagja is a small lava cave near lake Mývatn with a thermal spring inside. Grjotagja was used for filming the fifth episode of the third season of Game of Thrones, called Kissed by Fire.
