Hotel Bryghia in Bruges - Belgium 4K Travel Channel
During our stay in Bruges, we lived in the family-run Hotel Bryghia. The hotel is part of a building steeped in history, the Domus Osterlingorum, the House of the Orientals.
The merchants of the German Hanseatic League built the Domus Osterlingorum between 1478 and 1481. The coat of arms shield with the image of a two-headed eagle, awarded in 1486 by the Holy Roman Emperor Frederik III, can still be seen above the entrance today. The House of the Orientals was renovated in 1965 and turned partly into a hotel. In 2018, the current owners bought the Hotel Bryghia.
On the ground floor is the reception, in which you can usually also meet the friendly hotel owner. He is always available for useful tips and information.
Feudal furniture in Renaissance style invites you to linger or read.
Right next door is the breakfast room, where you can start the day with an extensive breakfast at the buffet.
With the elevator, you reach the rooms. They are not very spacious but very clean and, however, offer everything that one needs.
Telephone and television are a matter of course, as well as free WiFi.
The garage for the car is approx. 300 m away. We left the car there during our stay because in Bruges you don't need your car.
The center of Bruges is a 10-minute walk. At Jan van Eyck Square, only 170 m from the hotel, is a bus stop for the free city shuttle that brings you to the most important places in the city.
The Longer Canals runs past the back of the hotel. A canal where you find wonderful photo motives.
The charming Hotel Bryghia is the ideal starting point to explore Bruges.

Tour with the Free Shuttle Bus in Bruges - Belgium 4K Travel Channel
The free shuttle bus in Bruges is very helpful. It runs every 20 minutes.
The central junction of the shuttles is Jan van Eyck Square. Here, one shuttle bus drives the long northern loop, the other one goes south. Many sights of the city are along the way. The southern loop proves for us to be particularly helpful since it represents a direct connection between the station and the center of the city.
As we wait for the bus at Jan van Eyck Square, a dog club passes by. The members walk their dogs together through the city. Except for a few exceptions, the dogs are only dachshunds.
The bus goes through the Wijnzakstraat, the Kraanplein, and through the Jakob von Ooststraat past the Municipal Theater, Royal City Theater, to the egg market.
Through the Geldmunstraat and Noordzandstraat, we reach the Concert Hall, Concertgebouw. From here we go directly to the train station.
On the way back, the route takes us along the barge path to Katelijnepoort, where a cargo ship is passing the swinging bridge.
The Katelijne stop is diagonally opposite the Academie Brugge DKO, an academy of fine arts and audiovisual arts. It is the ideal stop to visit the Godshuizen.
Via Mariastraat the bus reaches Simon Stevin Square.
Next stop is at the Hof van Watervliet in the narrow street Oude Burg. From there we continue via the Wollestraat to the market place, Grote Markt.
Through the Vlamingstraat and the Academiestraat, we get back to Jan van Eyck Platz.
We didn't take the northern loop due to lack of time.

Bruges Memling Museum
In front of Our Lady's church stands the large complex of the medieval St. John's hospital, one of the oldest still existing hospitals in Europe. In 1978 it lost its function as hospital and harbors now the Memling museum, the hospital museum and the old pharmacy. It was transformed into a museum and a congress center. Inside the old chapel is now one of the smallest but most attractive museum of Bruges, the Memling Museum. Here six paintings by the 15th century painter Hans Memling can be seen.
Hans Memling (1433-1494) was one of the later ones in the row of Vlaamse Primitieven (Flemish Primitives). The wealth of Bruges also attracted artists and made Bruges the most praised city of the art of painting in the thirteenth century. Even though none of the big names like Van Eyck, Memlinc, Gerard David were born in Bruges, a innovative style was born here, that still has a world fame. Memling lived for a long time in the St. Johns hospital and died there.
This museum is part of the St.John's Hospital complex. Inside, the old hospital infirmary can be visited as well as the old pharmacy. In the former chapel of the Hospital six paintings by Hans Memling are exposed.
One of the masterpieces is the Shrine of St. Ursula. This wooden shrine contains the relics of St. Ursula. In six bow-arched panels, Memling tells the history of Ursula. The two front panels show St.Ursula accompanied by 10 virgins, each representing 1.000 virgins (see picture below) , and Our Blessed Lady in the presence of two hospital sisters.
The other masterpiece is the 'Altarpiece of Saint-John the Baptist and Saint-John the Evangelist', made in 1479 and painted for the main altar in the church of the hospital. In the central panel is the Holy Virgin holding the child Jesus. Jesus puts a ring around the finger of Saint Catherine of Sienna. The woman sitting on the right of the Holy Virgin is Saint Catherine of Alexandria. The left side panel shows the story of Saint John the Baptist who was decapitated by order of Salome. The right side-panel illustrates the Apocalypse as told by Saint-John the Evangelist.
The 'Diptych with Our Blessed Lady and Maarten van Nieuwenhoven' (1487). Maarten van Nieuwenhoven was a member of a rich and important Bruges family. He is shown here at the age of 23. Later he became Lord Mayor of Bruges.
