Common Ground 615 - Lost Towns
A historian tours Lost Towns of Central and Northern Minnesota.
Retired teacher, historian and author of the book Lost Towns, Rhonda Fochs takes Common Ground back in time with tours of Lincoln, Minnesota & Buena Vista, Minnesota. Through interviews with locals who remember the towns in their heyday, and historic photographs, Rhonda Fochs tells their tales and grants insight how our ever-evolving infrastructure led to the disappearance of these communities.
Jøssingfjorden
Jøssingfjorden is a fjord in Sokndal municipality in Rogaland county, Norway. The 3-kilometre (1.9 mi) long fjord is narrow and deep and is surrounded by mountains. It sits about 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) southeast of the municipal centre of Hauge. There is some settlement on the southeastern side of the fjord: the villages of Li, Vinterstø, and Bu. There is a road that runs along the southeast coast of the fjord, with sharp hairpin turns leading down from the mountains to the shore of the fjord both heading north and south from the fjord.
The Tellnes mine, one of Norway's largest titanium mines, is located in the mountains about 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) northeast of the fjord. The mine is run by a company called Titania, and the fjord is used as the shipping port for the company. The Nedre Helleren Power Plant is located at the head of the fjord. The electricity is generated by water from lakes located high in the mountains and the water is piped down to the sea level power plant the force of the falling water produces the electricity.
At the head of the fjord is the small Helleren farm which is now abandoned. It sits in a narrow valley with steep rock cliffs on two sides, a rock scree on the third side, and the fjord on the fourth side. The base of one of the rock cliffs stops about 8 metres (26 ft) above the ground forming a rock shelter, or heller (hence the name of the farm). The farm is preserved and is now owned by the Dalane folk museum.

The Log Church of Norway Lake
SUNBURG, KANDIYOHI COUNTY, MINNESOTA Visit this historic site on the Glacial Ridge Trail in rural Minnesota - where the flood of Norwegian immigrants during the 1860s and 1870s built a log church. Nearly 150 years later, descendants of the original pioneer families reconstructed a replica, and also discovered two authentic pioneer-era log cabins. A facinating story and a slice of real history well worth visiting in person!
Lofotr Vikingmuseum Lofoten Norge Norra Norway
Viking Museum, Lofoten
Norge Norra Norway Norvegia
The Lofotr Viking Museum (Lofotr Vikingmuseum) is a historical museum based on a reconstruction and archaeological excavation of a Viking chieftain's village on the island of Vestvågøya in the Lofoten archipelago in Nordland county, Norway. It is located in the small village of Borg, near Bøstad, in the municipality of Vestvågøy.
It is part of the Museum Nord consortium.
In 1983, archaeologists uncovered the Chieftain House at Borg (På Borg på Vestvågøya i Lofoten), a large Viking Era building believed to have been already established around the year 500 AD.
A joint Scandinavian research project was conducted at Borg from 1986 until 1989. Excavations revealed the largest building ever to be found from the Viking period in Norway. The foundation of the Chieftain House at Borg measured 83 metres (272 ft) long and 9 metres (30 ft) high. The seat at Borg is estimated to have been abandoned around AD 950.
After the excavation ended, the remains of what had once been the long-house remained visible. The long-house has been reconstructed slightly to the north of the excavation site. In 1995, the Lofotr Viking Museum was opened. The museum includes a full reconstruction of the 83-metre (272 ft) long chieftain's house, a blacksmith's forge, two ships (replicas of the Gokstad ship, one in full scale size) and their boathouses, and various reenactments intended to immerse the visitor in life at the time of the Vikings. The main building was designed by Norwegian architect, Gisle Jakhelln.
The administration of Lofotr Viking Museum is located in the former parsonage of the Borge Church. In September 2006, a planned enlargement of Lofotr, the building of a large amphitheater into the ground between the reception building and the Chieftain House, was postponed because of the archeological findings of some 2,000-year-old cooking sites and pole holes at the site.

Azerbaijan/Lahic-Lahij (Greater Caucasian Village) Part 15
Welcome to my travelchannel. On my channel you can find almost 1000 films of more than 70 countries.
See the playlist on my youtube channel.Enjoy!
Lahıc:
Lahij (Azerbaijani: Tat: Löhij) is a village and municipality on the southern slopes of Greater Caucasus within the Ismailli Rayon of Azerbaijan. Population is approximately 860 people who speak the Tat language.Lahij is a notable place in Azerbaijan, with its authentic handicrafts traditions, particularly related to copper. The village's carpet and rug crafts are also well known in Azerbaijan and the South Caucasus. Lahij has an old sewage system (some experts claim that it was built 1000 – 1500 years ago). Due to frequent earthquakes local people have developed sophisticated and authentic construction techniques.
The majority of the population of Lahij speaks the Tati language The residents of the region are usually bilingual: as well as the Tati language, an Iranian language, the Azerbaijani language is also widely spoken.
Being situated on the left bank of the River Ghirdiman and the slopes of the Niyal Mountain Chain, the settlement of Lahij is a unique living district, with its unusual planning lay out, transport systems, and its public, private and religious buildings. Lahij is an example of early urbanization and architecture, as shown by its cobbled streets and squares, together with its developed sewerage systems and water pipelines. Subterranean kurabandis (‘sewerage system’), made from river stones, and dating back to almost one thousand years, are thought to be one of the most ancient sewerage systems used in the world.
The residents of Lahij are divided into three categories, based on their craftsmanship: Baadvan, Azavarro and Araghird.[9] Each of these categories has its own village square, mosque, hammam and graveyard. One of the most striking features of the urban look of Lahij, is the village square of each category, which, today, still has its specific role in the public life of the village.
Earthquakes frequently occur in the region, and, as a result, a specific style of building construction has developed – which include certain styles and techniques in crosscutting stone and installation of wood. The ancient dwelling houses in Lahij have remained unchanged, as, during the past centuries, there have not been any significant changes in the urban planning. The ground floors of houses built in the main trading street are used as workshops and trade rooms. The traditional interiors of these Lahij houses include decorative tableware and other items, placed in different sized holes in the walls (known in Azerbaijan as takhcha, chamakhatan) and on wall shelves.
Copper work is the most important of the skills developed by Lahij craftsmen. Lahij is renowned for its production of arms and copper items, decorated with carved ornaments. The development of copper production triggered the formation of such professions in Lahij as tinsmith, blacksmith and others, together with the creation of bituminous coal. The structure and supplies of copper workshops, as well as its traditional external look and its production processes remain preserved today, as they were in previous centuries. Written sources, as well as, the rich copperware collections that may be seen in the museums of Azerbaijan, Georgia, Russian and Europe, prove the existence of over 80 types of copperware equipment used in copperware manufacturing in Lahij.
Leather goods’ manufacture was the second biggest craft skill in Lahij, after that of coppersmith. The local leather goods’ master craftsmen were expert in using shagren, tumaj and yuft as raw materials for various products such as shoes, belts, leather quilted jackets, book covers and bridles. Leather production in Lahij created suitable conditions for the development of other craftsmen, with associated skills - such as saddle makers, bridle makers, cobblers, hat makers and sheepskin makers.
The development of international tourism, together with more knowledge about the people and cultures, has resulted in a gradual interest in the cultural diversity of the Region. Lahij, in recent years, has attracted the attention of many tourists visiting from countries worldwide and as a result Lahij is now included in the travel tours of several leading tourism agencies.Wikipedia

Switzerland playlist
We’re going to show you several different ways that you can get up to the top of the Schilthorn and then back down again. One preferred way to get up to the Schilthorn is take the cable car up to Grutschalp and then a mountain railroad along to Murren – get out, maybe have lunch in Murren, and then the big cable car ride up to the top of the Schilthorn. Then you come back down the same cable car and you can proceed down another cable car to the valley bottom of Lauterbrunnen and proceed by public bus through the valley back to Lauterbrunnen town. There is also time for a delightful mountain walk from Murren to Gimmelwald, then go inside the mountain at Trummelbach Falls.
This is a longer, more complete version of a very popular movie we previously uploaded.

Before the Interstate Highway System, before famed Route 66, before highways were even numbered, there was one road that started it all, one road that changed America forever: The Lincoln Highway. “100 Years on the Lincoln Highway” is the story of the first coast to coast automobile road in the United States and its impact on Wyoming.
The Ascent of Money [Part 5] - Real-estate Serects
It sounded so simple: give state-owned assets to the people. After all, what better foundation for a property-owning democracy than a campaign of privatisation encompassing housing? An economic theory says that markets can't function without mortgages, because it's only by borrowing against their assets that entrepreneurs can get their businesses off the ground. But what if mortgages are bundled together and sold off to the highest bidder?

Around the Corner with John McGivern | Program | New Glarus (#805)
[Original Airdate: January 31, 2019]
It doesn’t take long to figure out the heritage of New Glarus. If the Swiss flags or the edelweiss at Brenda’s Blumenladen don’t give it away, the Alpine architecture and the brown Swiss cows all over town sure will! You know that people are proud when they name their organizations after the city. That’s just what New Glarus Brewing Company, New Glarus Welding, New Glarus Kinderchor and the New Glarus Hotel Restaurant did, which made them really easy for John to find. And he was happy to be “Swissified” by Chef Roland Furst, cultural expert Peter Etter and Swiss shop owner Esther Zgraggen. He was surprised when he was asked to milk the animals at the Voegeli and Lucky Dog farms, but at least he was good at it! John may never get to the original Glarus in Switzerland, but who cares? New Glarus is better anyway!
