About Groot Constantia:
If you haven’t heard about Groot Constantia, then it is my pleasure to introduce you to South Africa’s oldest winery. I would be doing a disservice if I didn’t give some of the history about this estate. In 1679 Simon van der Stel was appointed by the Dutch East India Company to govern the Cape of Good Hope. After years of loyal service, he requested land from the Company. He periodically sent out riders to collect soil samples and in 1685 he found a potential wine-growing area that had magnificent scenery situated behind Table Mountain. Over the years the wines produced on the estate caught the attention of influential people across the globe – clearly due to its impressive quality. Global aristocracy made sure that they had enough stock of this acclaimed and precious product.
The estate was named Constantia after the Latin word for constancy or steadfastness. These attributes he valued greatly and today the winemaker, Boela Gerber and staff follow in his footsteps to uphold his enduring legacy of perfection at Groot Constantia.

Yes, we visited theeee oldest winefarm in South Africa. We actually went back to this place 3 times to savour their Grand Constance and to do the history tour they offer with the wine tasting.
We were served by very knowledgable and friendly staff (as you can see) and they insisted that we try their Hidden Gem the Grand Constance (A desert wine made from Muscadel grapes) - WOW, what an explosion of apricot, and tropical fruit that lasted until I put my head on the pillow that night.
We definitely recommend their Chardonnay (which has won many prizes - including the best Chardonnay in South Africa).
Definitely a place to go see and a place to taste all the wines.
From their website: Groot Constantia’s revered history tells us how a man’s love of wine established the first wine farm in South Africa. By going back 330 years, we come to understand how 891 morgen of land created the origins of the South African wine industry, and how every owner thereafter contributed to what we know as Groot Constantia today

Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens - Groot Constantia Winery - Cape Town
On the last part of our South Africa Adventure we visit Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens and Groote Constantia Winery. This is what we saw:
Kirstenbosch is an important botanical garden nestled at the eastern foot of Table Mountain in Cape Town. When Kirstenbosch, the most famous of the gardens, was founded in 1913 to preserve the country's unique flora, it was the first botanical garden in the world with this ethos. Kirstenbosch places a strong emphasis on the cultivation of indigenous plants.

Groot Constantia - Constantia Rood 2014 - Constantia tasted 100% blind by the Best Sommelier of the World, Andreas Larsson.
Dark ruby colour with a purple hue. Spicy nose of wild herbs, smoked meat and dark berries. The palate has classic medium body, good density and layers of cassis, red berries, smoky notes and a fine herbal spiciness without greenness, good length and ripe tannin, digest with good drinkability.
