Grosmont Castle is a ruined castle in Grosmont, Monmouthshire, Wales, very near the border with Herefordshire, England, and overlooking a bend in the River Monnow.

Grosmont Castle is one of the 'Three Castles' in Monmouthshire. This 13th century castle was built in the Trothy Valley to defend the route between Hereford (England) and South Wales.

Grosmont is one of the three Norman built castle on the Welsh-English border in Monmouthshire, the others being White Castle and Skenfrith. This one is a joy to fly around on a sunny day. Music is 'Acoustic Breeze' by Bensound (bensound.com).
Grosmont Castle
Grosmont Castle is a ruined castle in the village of Grosmont, Monmouthshire, Wales. The fortification was established by the Normans in the wake of the invasion of England in 1066, to protect the route from Wales to Hereford. Possibly commissioned by William fitz Osbern, the Earl of Hereford, it was originally an earthwork design with timber defences. In 1135, a major Welsh revolt took place, and in response King Stephen brought together Grosmont Castle and its sister fortifications of Skenfrith and White Castle to form a lordship known as the Three Castles, which continued to play a role in defending the region from Welsh attack for several centuries.

Carvings and Castles - Grosmont, Kilpeck and Abbey Dore
A walk around Grosmont, Kilpeck and Abbey Dore, looking at some of the art and carvings and the history of the area. Some of it is in Herefordshire and some in Monmouthshire - the sites span Wales and England.
Corbels are carvings and gargoyles are carvings with water spouts - so that's the difference between those.
NB. I said Hubert De Burgh is not one of mine, but I checked again and he was! 23rd great grandfather. Which means I share him with several million others. At the 27th great grandparent range we all have around 512M ancestors.
Th Plantagenets of Grosmont are only 17th or 18th great grandparents - around 512k ancestors (considerably fewer) - and as they are doubled/tripled/quadrupled up, a lot fewer than that.

Laugharne Castle or Castell Talacharn is a castle in the town of Laugharne in Southern Carmarthenshire, Wales.
It is located on the estuary of the River Taf and was built in 1116. In 1215 it was rebuilt as a Norman stronghold and sixteenth century fortified manor house. After changing hands a number of times during the Civil War, eventually it was captured by Parliamentary forces in 1644.
The Boathouse is a house in which the poet Dylan Thomas lived with his family between 1949 and 1953, the last four years of his life.

Castell Coch - The Red Castle. Cardiff. Wales
The red castle is a familiar site to anyone travelling along the M4 near Cardiff. Lit up at night and visible clearly from the motorway in the day we take a look at this engimatic castle up close. It costs £6 entry for an Adult and is worth it because inside is like a complete fairytale luxurious decor.

One too many for 30926?
A damp day at Grosmont, and Schools class 4-4-0 no. 30926 'Repton' adds another coach to its load. Then, the loco heads tender-first up the hill towards Goathland with the 6 coaches. A brief slip occurs as it pulls out of the platform, and this is quickly controlled, but then a short while later, the loco goes into the worst slip I have ever witnessed.
As the train passes and heads into the tunnel, steam can be seen escaping between coaches 2 and 3, due to a leak in the steam heating.

A tour of Carew Castle, Pembrokeshire, West Wales, UK on a typical Welsh summer's day. Originally a Norman stronghold the castle has many Tudor features and a later Elizabethan extension.
Carew Castle is close to Tenby and worth a visit for a couple of hours.

Skenfrith Castle
Grouped with White Castle and Grosmont Castle, Skenfrith is one of the Three Castles or Trilateral Castles built in the Monnow Valley of the Southern Marches as part of the Norman conquest of South Wales.
The current stone structure dates from the 13th century, although there is clear evidence of earlier fortifications at the site.
Unusually it is also built on low lying ground next to a river - relying entirely upon the fortifications for its defence.

Three Castles Walk - 22 Miles
Three Castles Walk - 22 Miles
Join Nick and I for a 22 mile walk in the beautiful Welsh Countryside starting from Skenfrith, Monmouthshire close to the Wales/England border, on to the beautiful village of Grosmont for a look around Grosmont Castle before climbing to the trigg on top of Graig Syfyrddin also known as Edward's Tump that has an elevation of 423 metres.
We enjoy lunch from the woodland edge just off Graig Syfyrddin enjoying views to the the west of the Skirrid and the Sugar Loaf as it emerges from the mist and cloud.
We then march on toward White Castle at Llantilio Crossenny and have a walk around the beautiful church of St. Mary at Llanfair Cilgoed before reaching White Castle otherwise known as Llantilio Castle our second Norman Castle of the day at Llantilio Crossenny.
The walk then took us to Skenfrith Castle and our third and final Norman Castle of the day and 22 miles completed which was a little longer than we expected due to footpath diversions between White Castle and Skenfrith.
A great walk covering a lot of ground with a wealth of natural beauty, human interaction with the landscape and three once mighty Norman Castles that helped shape the societies and culture of Briton since the Norman Conquest of 1066.
Access to the three castles was free. Well done and thank you CADW!
