At 3,798 metres high Austria’s white giant is every bit as imposing as it is intriguing, enveloped by an aura of natural beauty that’s beyond imagination. Originally built to showcase the true delights of the Hohe Tauern National Park, and to bolster the country’s flailing economy after the First World War, the Großglockner High Alpine Road excelled all expectations bringing over 50 million tourists to the area since it opened in 1935.
Starting in Heiligenblut you initially trace your way through lush Glockner meadows as the gradient pitches up and holds its form at over double figures for the first 6km. A moment of respite gifts you an extra heartbeat to savour your surrounds before the final push, past the powerful Fensterbach waterfalls, towards the eternal ice plain of the Pasterze Glacier and the foot of the legendary Großglockner itself. Without question absolutely one of the most spectacular roads you’ll ever ride. And breathe…..

AUSTRIA - GROSSGLOCKNER Pt 1 Heiligenblut Toll - Austria
This is a short prelude video to my Grossglockner ride which i'm still editing. I'Il upload it soon. This 6 minute clip can give you an insight to the great approach roads and what you can expect at the southern end of the pass. I've just completed the pass in the video and am heading back to camp in a southerly direction to the Heiligenblut toll boothe where i start the next video from. The approach roads are still spectacular and part of the Grossglockner Alpine Pass. A day pass is €26 and a 2nd day is €12 as long as you keep proof of the first day's toll.
Grossglockner Alpine Road
This is a somewhat compressed/abbreviated video of the Grossglockner High Alpine Road in Austria. The pass itself is 48 kilometres in length, comprises 36 bends and has an altitude ascent to 2504 metres. The name Grossglockner is taken from the mountain which is the highest in Austria (3798m) and can be viewed from several stretches of the road. The video starts from the southern end just outside the village of Heiligenblut and finishes at the Toll/Maut station just before Fusch.
Camera used was a Drift HD170 Stealth located on my Schuberth C3 motorcycle helmet.

Austria's scenery is some of the best in the world. The Grossglockner Alpine Road is a beautiful drive through breathtaking scenery. Mountains, waterfalls and snow all awaited us on this epic journey. Our Australian friend had never seen snow before and was very excited to finally make his dream come true.

The Grossglockner, High Alpine Road & Marmots | Summer | In 1080p HD | Part 1
At 3,798m the Grossglockner is not only the highest mountain in Austria, it also counts among the highest peaks in the Alps.
The pyramid-shaped Grossglockner lies behind the slightly smaller Kleinglockner (3,770 m), separated by a saddle-like formation known as the Glocknerscharte. The first ascent was in 1800 but victory and defeat accompanied other expeditions. The Pallavicini Trough is named after Margrave Alfred Pallavicini, who met his death on the Glockner in 1886.
The Grossglockner and Pasterze Glacier have been owned by the Austrian Alpine Association since 1918.
In 1951, Oskar Kühlken, author of the Glockner Book described the myth behind the mountain as follows:
The Grossglockner is more than just the highest mountain in Austria. It is enveloped in the aura of an extraordinary personality, cast on all who fall under its spell.
With the building of the Grossglockner High Alpine Road, the majestic peak acquired a new dimension. As a popular excursion destination it is the epitome of an impressive natural experience for many people: size and power can be felt here, one is subject to the fascination of the eternal ice and the elemental force of nature.
