The most beautiful monument in The US
The Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument is a U.S. National Monument protecting 1,880,461 acres (760,996 ha)[1] of land in southern Utah.
There are three main regions: the Grand Staircase, the Kaiparowits Plateau, and the Canyons of the Escalante - all of which are administered by the Bureau of Land Management as part of the National Landscape Conservation System. President Bill Clinton designated the area as a national monument in 1996 using his authority under the Antiquities Act. Grand Staircase-Escalante encompasses the largest land area of all U.S. National Monuments.

Hole In The Rock Road, Utah - Escalante to Lake Powell
Like Drivelapse? Friend it!
Ready to spend an entire day in one of the most remote corners of the USA? Take a drive down Hole In The Rock Road and end up 56 miles from the nearest pavement. Hole In The Rock Road cuts into the heart of the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument, to a dead-end, high above Lake Powell, a.k.a. the Colorado River.
That dead-end was a major obstacle for early Mormon settlers. They needed to cross the river, in order to settle the land on the opposite side. The only way down to the river was to build an almost-vertical road, by blasting away rock in a narrow slot in the cliff, then lowering their wagons down by rope.
Nowadays, it's impossible to imagine that their mission was successful. It's quite a feat just to make it to the end of the road in a regular vehicle (though it can be done without 4-wheel-drive). The rewards for driving this road are immense -- you get to see an other-worldly corner of Utah, and experience overwhelming solitude.

Cottonwood Canyon, UT
Cottonwood Canyon in the U.S. state of Utah is a water-carved canyon that has eroded along weak locations in the Earth's crust at the joins between major geological regions. To the east are the lower steps of the Grand Staircase, which is not visible from the road and to the north is the Kaiparowits Plateau.

Cottonwood Canyon Narrows Hike
This slot canyon hike is accessed by driving about 27 miles north up Cottonwood Canyon Road (a dirt road) from route 89 in Southern Utah. This hike, in Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument, has two trail entrances, north and south. South is only about a mile or so below north. We chose north as we heard south had water and quite a scramble up a boulder choke. We entered from south and walked north until the boulder choke, then came back to the south trail entrance. There were three entrances/exits which I show in the video. This was a nice hike. The canyon is wide (really wide) in areas and narrow in others. This section had an interesting side canyon which is found on the GPS or maps.

SUMMARY
=======
The Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument (GSENM) is a United States national monument that originally designated 1,880,461 acres (7,610 km2) of protected land in southern Utah in 1996. The monument's size was later reduced by a succeeding presidential proclamation in 2017. The land is among the most remote in the country; it was the last to be mapped in the contiguous United States.There are three main regions: the Grand Staircase, the Kaiparowits Plateau, and the Canyons of the Escalante (Escalante River). All regions are administered by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) as part of the National Conservation Lands system. President Bill Clinton designated the area as a national monument in 1996 using his authority under the Antiquities Act. Grand Staircase-Escalante is the largest national monument managed by the BLM.
On December 4, 2017, President Donald Trump ordered that the monument's size be reduced by nearly 47 percent to 1,003,863 acres (4,062 km2), with the remainder broken up into three separate areas, two of which border one another along the Paria River. Conservation, angling, hunting, and outdoor recreation groups have filed suit to block any reduction in the national monument, arguing that the president has no legal authority to materially shrink a national monument.
