S3 E14 Lee Pass to The Grotto, Zion National Park, Utah October 2016
Our 37 mile/60k descent through beautiful fall foliage and most of the Zion Traverse was an ideal multi-night introduction to backpacking in Zion National Park. For Craig, this was his first overnight trip ever; Well done!
We chose to skip the side trip to Angel's Landing on this trip because we had both done it before. If you do not suffer from vertigo or a fear of heights, this exhilarating side trip is highly recommended!
Be sure to secure a backcountry permit if camping overnight; I obtained mine in person the day before entry.
Water sources can be challenging during autumn on this route. Here was my experience with known water sources during our visit:
Spring near ∆7 Kolob Canyon: Too slow
La Verkin Creek: Very good if pulled from swift current
Hop Valley Trailhead: No water, CACHE WATER HERE IF POSSIBLE
Wildcat Canyon Spring: Too slow
Sawmill Spring: Very good but shallow puddle (glad I had a small water bottle to bail water in to my gravity bag)
Cabin Spring: Undesirable muddy flavor
During the spring, Potato Hollow provides an additional water source.
Segments of this trip can be done as an out-and-back day hike or as a one-way day hike with a shuttle. This route requires a 43 mile shuttle from Zion Canyon entrance to Lee Pass. If you don't have an extra car, Zion Adventure Company offers a shuttle service. For more info, visit or call them at:

Any overnight stay in the Zion Wilderness requires a permit; day hikes do not, with the exception of The Narrows day hike.
Advance Reservations: up to 3 months in advance
Over half of all the Wilderness camping areas are available using a calendar reservation system. Reservations are available online during a three month time frame. On the fifth day of every month at 10:00 am MT, reservations for the next month become available. If they are still available, they can be made until 5:00 pm MT on the day before your trip.
There is a fee for an online calendar reservation, and there is an additional charge for a permit that is determined by the size of your group.
Backpackers that intend to camp in multiple locations need to make a separate reservation for each location.
Walk-in Permits: up to one day in advance
About one-third of backpacking permits are not available through the reservation system. They are available as walk-in permits and can be obtained at park visitor centers the day before or the day of your trip.
If you are a frequent visitor to Zion, consider enrolling in the Zion Express Membership. It allows members who have obtained a reservation to convert it to a permit online, three days before their trip. The entire permit process can be completed online. Stop by the Wilderness Desk to enroll.

West Rim Trail at Zion National Park: Top-Down from Lava Point to Angel's Landing / Zion Canyon
A hike (~18 miles) along the West Rim Trail in Zion National Park.
Sources indicating official length of the trail vary. The hike depicted involved the hike up Angel's Landing and other extensive sightseeing along the trail, as well as an unintentional detour. Our estimate may be high, however we feel that due to the relative difficulty of the trail, it is preferable to overestimate the length, perhaps helping others heed additional caution.
Inexperienced hikers are strongly advised to hike the West Rim Trail as a two-day backpacking trip, which includes camping at a marked site and filtering one's own water. To fully experience the trail in one day, we suggest one get started early in the morning and be prepared for 10-12 hours of strenuous hiking.
To reach the trailhead from Springdale drive west to the town of Virgin, then turn north on Kolob Terrace Road. Drive 19 miles and turn at sign indicating Lava Point. At the next junction, turn left to reach the West Rim Trail Head. Be aware of poor road conditions, and also make plans to either be dropped off at the trail, or to be returned to your vehicle later, as this is not a round-trip hike.
Note: This video depicts only a tiny fraction of the vast wilderness of Zion National Park. Plan ahead to avoid dehydration, exhaustion, inclement weather, and dangerous falls. Getting lost will obviously exacerbate all the above risks.

Hiking Angels Landing, Zion National Park Utah, USA in 4K Ultra HD
Zion National Park in Utah has plenty of trails, but Angels Landing may be the most breathtaking.
Angels Landing is one of the world's most renowned hiking destinations — though it's certainly not for the faint of heart. With dizzying heights, and hairpin turns, the thousands of hikers it draws every year might not know exactly what they're getting themselves into.
Start Location - The Grotto Trailhead - Zion Canyon
Difficulty - Strenuous; steep with exposure to long drop-offs
Distance - 5 miles (round trip), 4-5 hours
Elevation change - 1,488 feet
Weather - The best time of year to hike Angels Landing is in spring, summer and fall. Summer afternoons are very hot--get up early in the morning while temperatures are still cool. During winter the trail ices over and can be extremely dangerous. Do not hike during a thunderstorm--lightning will strike.
Route description:
The trailhead is at the bridge across the road of the Grotto Picnic Area, in Zion Canyon. The first part of the hike follows the West Rim Trail, which is clearly identified by a sign. The trail is broad and well maintained. The first section is fairly level as it follows the river and then crosses the canyon bottom. Switchbacks allow the trail to climb the canyon wall, up to Refrigerator Canyon. That canyon is pleasantly cool, scenic, and walking is easy.
The trail then climbs another series of switchbacks, called Walter's Wiggles. These 21 switchbacks are very tight and you gain elevation rapidly, but this section is short and not oppressive.
For the final 1/2 mile, the trail follows the ridge across a saddle and up the hogs back. This is where things get interesting, steep, where you are grateful for the chains.

Zion National Park - Mount Carmell Highway - Utah - LeAw in the USA //Ep.41
We are living the American dream driving the Historic Route 66 from Chicago to Santa Monica but we are doing some detours to visit some places we like.
In this 41st episode, we are visiting Zion National Park, hiking to Emerald Pools, to the Narrows and driving through Mt. Carmell Tunnel with Lucky LeAw, our old vintage truck camper.
Enjoy the ride with us! ;)
Zion National Park is an American national park located in Southwestern Utah near the city of Springdale. A prominent feature of the 229-square-mile (590 km2) park is Zion Canyon, which stretches 15 miles (24 km) long and spans up to half a mile (800 m) deep. It cuts through the reddish and tan-colored Navajo Sandstone by the North Fork of the Virgin River. The lowest point in the park is 3,666 ft (1,117 m) at Coalpits Wash and the highest peak is 8,726 ft (2,660 m) at Horse Ranch Mountain. Located at the junction of the Colorado Plateau, Great Basin, and Mojave Desert regions, the park has a unique geography and a variety of life zones that allow for unusual plant and animal diversity. Numerous plant species as well as 289 species of birds, 75 mammals (including 19 species of bat), and 32 reptiles inhabit the park's four life zones: desert, riparian, woodland, and coniferous forest. Zion National Park includes mountains, canyons, buttes, mesas, monoliths, rivers, slot canyons, and natural arches.
Human habitation of the area started about 8,000 years ago with small family groups of Native Americans, one of which was the semi-nomadic Basketmaker Anasazi (300 CE). Subsequently, the Virgin Anasazi culture (500 CE) and the Parowan Fremont group developed as the Basketmakers settled in permanent communities.[4] Both groups moved away by 1300 and were replaced by the Parrusits and several other Southern Paiute subtribes. Mormons came into the area in 1858 and settled there in the early 1860s. In 1909, President William Howard Taft named the area Mukuntuweap National Monument in order to protect the canyon. In 1918, the acting director of the newly created National Park Service, Horace Albright, drafted a proposal to enlarge the existing monument and change the park's name to Zion National Monument, a name used by the Mormons. According to historian Hal Rothman: The name change played to a prevalent bias of the time. Many believed that Spanish and Indian names would deter visitors who, if they could not pronounce the name of a place, might not bother to visit it. The new name, Zion, had greater appeal to an ethnocentric audience. On November 20, 1919, the United States Congress established the monument as Zion National Park, and it was signed by President Woodrow Wilson. The Kolob section was proclaimed a separate Zion National Monument in 1937, but was incorporated into the park in 1956.
The Emerald Pools Trail begins at the Zion Lodge westward to Lower Emerald Pool. Built in 1932, it was created using only hand tools. An extension built the same year runs to the Grotto Campground. The first section required the construction of stone steps to a high standard of design and finish. Repairs to the stonework were carried out in 1969. The 2.2-mile (3.5 km) trail was individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places on February 14, 1987.
The Narrows is the narrowest section of Zion Canyon in Zion National Park, Utah. Situated on the North Fork of the Virgin River and upstream of the main canyon, The Narrows is one of the premier hikes in the park and on the Colorado Plateau.
The Zion – Mount Carmel Highway is a 25 mi long road in Utah in the USA, with a 1.1 mi long tunnel. The road runs from the entrance to Zion National Park eastward to Mount Carmel Junction with U.S. Route 89 as a portion of Utah State Route 9. The road became part of a loop tour of Zion, Bryce Canyon, Cedar Breaks and the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park.

Angels Landing | FULL HIKE - Zion National Park
On this day (December 2017), I hike/climb Angels Landing in Zion National Park in the state of Utah. This mountain at its highest peak is at 5,790 feet (1,765 meters), and the trail begins at the Grotto drop off point. It’s one of the most famous and thrilling adventures in Zion anyone could experience. Although, since 2004, six individuals have died falling from the cliff. That being said, it’s a one in a life time experience, one must have.

Located in Utah, this is a famous hike in North America due to the path's challenging condition. At least 6 people have died hiking Angel's Landing since 2004.
The trail starts at the Grotto trail head. There a two segments with switchbacks that make really nice photos before you reach the difficult part of the hike. This trail has an elevation change of 1500 feet and has 1000 foot sheer drop offs on both sides.
It's a strenuous hike, particularly the last half mile. That portion took us one hour round trip (purely hiking/climbing), mostly because it is busy and many parts of trail are so narrow you have to line up behind people.
The trail is almost 5 miles (8 km) round trip. It took us a total of three and a half hours, including spending time at the top of Angel's landing.
Not recommended for people with vertigo, fear of heights. A good balance is important. There are chains to help in the most dangerous places.
Bring more water than you would, particularly on a hot day as there is no water at all on the trail. For footwear, wearing good hiking shoes is a must if you want to go to the top.

Angels Landing In The Rain | Zion National Park | Utah | 4K | GoPro HERO 7 Black
The Angels Landing hike is considered amongst the scariest and most rewarding hikes in North America, offering panoramic and stunning views of the canyon. The hike starts from the Grotto Trailhead in Zion National Park and follows the West Rim Trail. The summit of Angels Landing is around 1500 feet above the canyon floor.
This video was shot when I hiked up to Angels Landing on March 22, 2019. I had hiked up to the summit a couple of times in February, in the presence of ice and snow on the trail - was pretty scary as it was hard to get a foothold due to all the ice. I had done the hike earlier on March 8 and documented it via a video which can be found at

Hiking the Zion Narrows - Zion National Park
#zionnationalpark #zionnarrows #zionnarrowshike #besthikesintheworld
Hiking the Zion Narrows is a bucket list experience to be sure. It's considered one of the absolute best trails in the world and it's a hike nearly anyone can enjoy.
Hike the full 16 miles or just a few. Whatever you're up to. Here's what you'll need to know before heading out:
Plan on getting wet. The vast majority of the hike will be in the river. Wear closed toed shoes. Make sure to check the flow rate of the Virgin River before beginning your hike (info available at Zion National Park visitor center). Even on hot days, the narrows can be quite cold. Be prepared. Check air and water temperatures before heading out.
Start at the Temple of Sinawava (southern end) or Chamberlain's Ranch (northern end - PERMIT REQUIRED). If you begin at the southern end you can hike 5 miles to Big Spring but you will require a permit to venture further. 10 miles out and back total.
No toilets or trash receptacles anywhere along the trail. Pack out ALL of your waste. Please leave absolutely no trace.

Utah is one of the best states in the US to explore if you like nature. It has some of the best national parks and we covered Bryce Canyon National Park and Zion National Park. Angel's Landing is one of the most spectacular hikes in the US and we were lucky to do it. We also covered Grotto Trail, Lower Emerald pool and Temple of Sinawawa Riverside walk trails. The Narrows was closed due to extreme weather conditions. We also covered few other small trails in these 2 parks and have captured them in this video.

In the state of Utah, inside Zion National Park, there is a hiking trail called Angels Landing. It is one of the most famous and thrilling hikes in the park which provides a spectacular view of Zion Canyon. At its highest peak of 5,790 feet (1,765 meters), the trail begins at the Grotto drop off point. There will be several individuals there joining your hiking adventure depending on the day and time you go. Although this is an amazing experience, let it be known since 2004, 6 individuals have died falling from the cliff. On this day (December, 2016), I explored this massive mountain in the snow.
