Introduction to Fishing Day
Around 400 young anglers braved the rain and cold to enjoy themselves at the Groynes Junior Fishing Lakes on Sunday. 600 two-four kilogram salmon were released into the lakes the night before. Some children were able to leave after 15 minutes having caught their limit bag for the day. The fish release was sponsored by GVI Logistics as part of the Fresh Waters programme.

2019 Christchurch Take A Kid Fishing day
Over 6000 children plus caregivers flocked to Christchurch’s Childrens Fishing Lakes at the Groynes today for the annual Take A kid Fishing event.
Organised by the Christchurch Kids Fishing Trust for the last 35 years the popular event had perfect weather and drew in the crowds.
Anglers were shoulder to shoulder on the four fishing lakes, all trying to catch one of 800 salmon and 14 trophy rainbow trout grown by North Canterbury Fish & Game but donated by the Isaacs Conservation and Wildlife Trust.
The trophy rainbow trout are huge, the biggest of which would weigh close to 14 pounds.
The free event started at 9am and children started arriving before 7am in order to get a good spot.
The Take a Kid Fishing event is for children 12 years and under, with one lake reserved especially for the under eights where each child has a short one-on-one session with an expert angler.
Around 60 salmon were caught in this pond in the first 90 minutes.
At all four lakes, skilled anglers from fishing clubs were on hand to give advice and help.
The Groynes venue is great place for a family outing over the summer months and with the prospect of pan sized salmon for the kids to catch makes it a popular place to get salmon for dinner.

Kids get the chance to catch a monster fish.
Fourteen trophy trout are amongst 800 salmon that have been released into Christchurch’s Groynes fishing lakes today.
They were released by North Canterbury Fish and Game in preparation for the annual Take A Kid Fishing day on Sunday October 16.
The popular family event is organised by the Kids Fishing Charitable Trust, supported by Fish & Game and the Isaac Conservation trust.
The event is free, starts at 9am and usually draws in parents and children in the hundreds but there is plenty of room and plenty of fish.
The four junior fishing lakes have all been populated with fish and can only be fished by anglers aged 17 and under.
Security will watch over the lakes until the event to make sure no one tries to take advantage of the well-stocked fishery.
Fish & Game host these annual events throughout the country with the Southland region next up holding their event on 24 October in Te Anau, Eastern region holds their final event on 6 November in Rotorua and the Central South Island event is on 12 November in Twizel.
Christchurch Take A Kid Fishing
Over 6000 Cantabrians packed out the four Childrens Fishing Lakes at the Groynes on Sunday, for the annual Take a Kid Fishing day.
With perfect weather crowds of children and parents turned out to try their hand at catching a salmon or trout.
It was fitting the first fish caught was one of 14 trophy rainbow trout put into the lake on Thursday by North Canterbury Fish & Game.
Four year-old Violet Noone surprised her father Patrick by reeling in the monster 6.5 pounder a mere four minutes after the hooter had sounded.
Violet showed that it wasn’t a fluke however reeling in another 6.5 pound trout within the hour, and her father Patrick says she is now hooked on fishing.
Eight hundred salmon were also released and children were catching them throughout the day.
Event Organiser Dale Coulter said it was the first time the event had filled the carpark up but there was plenty of room and plenty of fish.
The popular family event is organised by the Kids Fishing Charitable Trust, supported by Fish & Game and the Isaac Conservation Trust.
The free event which started at 9am is open to anglers aged 17 and under, and anglers arrived throughout the day to try and catch fish.
Over the summer months North Canterbury Fish & Game will restock the lakes on a regular basis so parents or caregivers looking for something to do with their children will have the opportunity to try their hand at angling.
Fish & Game host the kids fish out events throughout the country with the Southland Region next, holding their event on 24 October in Te Anau.
Eastern Region holds their final event on 6 November at the hatchery in Rotorua and the Central South Island's event is on 12 November in Twizel.
