38 Blackpool Central Library and Grundy Art Gallery
Turn left into Abingdon Street at Molloy's public house. This was originally known as The Railway Hotel. Catholic church services were held in the cellars before Sacred Heart Church was built. Cross Queen Street and continue to Springfield Road, noticing Central Library and Grundy Art Gallery (38) on the right. The Job Centre stands on the site of Christ Church, a cobble and brick built church constructed in 1866.
Central Library and Grundy Art Gallery (Listed) Designed by Cullen, Lochhead and Brown in a free Baroque style and opened in 1911, the library building was funded by philanthropist millionaire Andrew Carnegie. The corner entrance, with curved colonnade of six Ionic columns surmounted by a balustrade and an octagonal dome, is flanked by
identical frontages to Queen Street and Abingdon Street. Over the doorway is a stained glass window showing the Borough crest. This window was restored in 1999 as a Millennium gift from Blackpool Civic Trust. Blackpool Council commissioned the building of the Grundy Art Gallery in 1908 following a bequest of thirty-three artworks and a financial gift from brothers John and Cuthbert Grundy, both of whom were artists. The gallery first opened to the public in 1911. The Art Gallery is attached to the library on the Queen Street side. The style of the art gallery is similar but not identical to that of the
Central Library and the simple but elegant interior remains relatively unchanged. The gallery hosts an extensive programme of temporary exhibitions from established and emerging artists, together with displays from its collection of Victorian and modern
British painting.

Blackpool is a seaside resort on the Irish Sea coast of England. It's known for Blackpool Pleasure Beach, an old-school amusement park with vintage wooden roller coasters. Built in 1894, the landmark Blackpool Tower houses a circus, a glass viewing platform and the Tower Ballroom, where dancers twirl to the music of a Wurlitzer organ. Blackpool Illuminations is an annual light show along the Promenade.
Blackpool is a seaside resort and unitary authority area in Lancashire, England, on England's northwest coast. The town is on the Irish Sea, between the Ribble and Wyre estuaries, 15 miles (24 km) northwest of Preston, 27 miles (43 km) north of Liverpool, 28 miles (45 km) northwest of Bolton and 40 miles (64 km) northwest of Manchester.
Blackpool rose to prominence as a major centre of tourism in England when a railway was built in the 1840s connecting it to the industrialised regions of Northern England. The railway made it much easier and cheaper for visitors to reach Blackpool, triggering an influx of settlers, such that in 1876 Blackpool was incorporated as a borough, governed by its own town council and aldermen. In 1881, Blackpool was a booming resort with a population of 14,000 and a promenade complete with piers, fortune-tellers, public houses, trams, donkey rides, fish-and-chip shops and theatres. By 1901 the population of Blackpool was 47,000, by which time its place was cemented as the archetypal British seaside resort. By 1951 it had grown to 147,000.
Shifts in tastes, combined with opportunities for Britons to travel overseas, affected Blackpool's status as a leading resort in the late 20th century. Nevertheless, Blackpool's urban fabric and economy remains relatively undiversified, and firmly rooted in the tourism sector, and the borough's seafront continues to attract millions of visitors every year. In addition to its sandy beaches, Blackpool's major attractions and landmarks include Blackpool Tower, Blackpool Illuminations, the Pleasure Beach, Blackpool Zoo, Sandcastle Water Park, the Winter Gardens, and the UK's only surviving first-generation tramway.
Blackpool International Airport operated regular charter and scheduled flights throughout the UK and Europe. Blackpool Transport operates the main bus services in and around Blackpool. Blackpool once had two railway termini with a total of over 30 platforms, mainly used by excursion traffic in the summer. Blackpool Central, close to Blackpool Tower, was closed in 1964, while Blackpool North was largely demolished and rebuilt as a smaller facility.

Seaside Photographed: Grace Lau
★★★★★ From Victorian men in black to modern good-time girls, a tremendous history of seaside photographs reveals how Britons do love a day on the beach - The Guardian
This major exhibition examines the relationship between photographers, photography and the British seaside from the 1850s to the present. It is Turner Contemporary’s first ever photography exhibition.
As well as featuring the work of eminent photographers including Jane Bown, Henri Cartier Bresson, Vanley Burke, Anna Fox, Susan Hiller, Paul Nash, Martin Parr, and Ingrid Pollard, the curators have included rich and often unknown work from across photography’s history, including Raymond Lawson’s remarkable chronicle of family life in Whitstable.
Enzo Ragazzini captures the anarchy of the 1970 Isle of Wight festival, while Stuart Griffiths makes a bleak narrative of the 1990 rave scene in Brighton. Daniel Meadows, Barry Lewis and Dafydd Jones all photographed at Butlins in the 1970s and Grace Robertson records the raucous goings-on of a women’s’ day out to the coast in the 1950s. Composer Benjamin Britten and tenor Peter Pears, partners in music and in life, created a haven by the sea that they preserved in photographs.
Images of hotel life, the beach, the holiday camp, dressing up and dressing down, wild waves and coastlines all combine to create a rich picture of the British seaside.
In response to Seaside: Photographed, artists Bethan Peters and Stacie Lee Bennett-Worth have been commissioned to create a new artwork inspired by local residents. In Spring 2019, they will deliver workshops to families in collaboration with Thanet Early Years Project exploring the seaside through play, movement and digital media. They will create a work based on the ideas generated that will be available for the public to see in Summer 2019.
Curated by Val Williams and Karen Shepherdson, Seaside: Photographed is a touring exhibition organised by Turner Contemporary. The exhibition will take place at Turner Contemporary in summer 2019, touring to three other UK venues in 2020, each with their own unique connection to the seaside; John Hansard Gallery, Grundy Art Gallery, and Newlyn Art Gallery and the Exchange. With support from Arts Council England’s Strategic Touring Fund.
British Architecture #3 Queen Street, Blackpool, Lancashire.
Welcome to my channel.
This channel is mainly dedicated to videos of my hometown, Blackpool, Lancashire, England.
This is a new series for my channel where I'll be showing examples of British Architecture around Blackpool and sometimes other places.. :)
I hope you enjoy the series.
This video is the famous Queen Street in Blackpool, Lancashire..
Blackpool is a beautiful seaside town on the north west coast of England.
We have many cool attractions here including our world famous Blackpool Tower, the Pleasure Beach, three piers and a lovely sandy beach..
Blackpool is a relatively poor town that gets (unfairly in my opinion), a lot of bad press..
The aim of my channel is to show Blackpool in a better light..
No town or city is perfect so it's best to appreciate the good parts wherever you live :)
