Grunwald 2010
Poland -- the anniversary of the great battle
In July the countries of Middle and Eastern Europe are celebrating the 600th anniversary of the battle of Grunwald (sometimes called the 1st battle of Tannenberg), which for several centuries had shaped the history of the region. The reconstruction of the battle will attract 200 thousands spectators from all over the world.
On the 15th of July 1410 the largest battle of medieval Europe took place in the plains near Grunwald in the North of Poland. Among the nearly 60 thousand people fought guests from many countries invited by the Teutonic Order: the Germans, knights from contemporary Latvia and Estonia, Austrians, Swiss, Dutch, English and French. The Polish-Lithuanian kingdom opposed them with their own inhabitants which were Polish, Lithuanians and Russians, but also with their allies: Tatars, Moldovans and Czechs. The military campaign of the 1410 was a technological breakthrough, involving both western and eastern tactics. The Poles were the first in Europe to use the pontoon bridge for military purposes.
The big celebration of the anniversary is prepared mainly by Poles and Lithuanians. In July several museums will be opened and many monuments commemorating the victory of the Polish king Jogaila, the Grand Duke of Lithuania and other famous knights will be unveiled. In many Polish cities a giant picture presenting the Grunwald events is being displayed. Along the route where the allied forces marched the new tourist tracks are set, numerous historical festives, fairs, marches, rallies and races are organized. The Lithuanians have started the production of the great historical film called „The Day of Iron. Its engagement in the commemoration announced also Belarus, whose government increasingly frequently refers to the historical heritage of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, which for 5 centuries covered the territory of the country. Poland, Lithuania and Belarus are going to emit occasional coins and stamps.
In the celebration of this great anniversary participate Polish scouts, who have for two years conducted an innovative online educational project: historical strategic game, in which participants take the roles of medieval knight families. For July the scouts prepare a great international jamboree with numerous games and workshops and a tourist rally inspired by Live Action Role Playing games, including solving historical puzzles and mysteries.
The culminating point of the celebrations will be the international ceremony held on the battle-field of Grunwald (near Olsztyn, the region of Warmia-Mazury) honoured by the participation of the presidents of several countries and appealing to the audience with the great reconstruction of the battle, in which more than 2000 participants dressed in armour and costumes from the Middle Ages will be watched by nearly 200 000 spectators. A few days later an equally impressive reconstruction of the siege of the teutonic capital -- the castle of Malbork (Marienburg) is being planned. It is worth noting that the Malbork castle is the largest and one of the most striking gothic castle in the world.

Malbork
For any medievalist, no visit to Poland can be complete without a trip to Malbork -- the site of an impressive and large medieval castle. Malbork is located along the banks of the river Nogat, near the city of Gdansk. The first sections of the castle were built by the Teutonic Knights around 1280. The Teutonic Knights were a crusading military order made up of mostly Germans who were initially focused on protecting Christians in the Holy Land. Gradually, their interest shifted to Eastern Europe, where they fought against the Lithuanians and other pagan peoples, and set up their own state along the Baltic Sea.
They Teutonic Knights named this castle Marienburg after the the Virgin Mary, and over the next few decades the site saw new additions and extra fortifications built, increasing its size. By the year 1309, Malbork had become the home of the Order's Grand Master, making the castle essentially the capital of the Teutonic state. The 14th and 15th centuries saw further expansion, until the castle became the largest Gothic fortification in Europe, and able to accommodate over 3000 fighters.
Malbork is designed to be a series of three fortifications -- a High, Middle and Low Castle, which would allow defenders to fall back deeper into the fortress when pressed from attackers. The entire site takes up about 52 acres of space, and consists of several layers of defences. Towers, moats, walls, bridges and gates help add to its strength, and visitors can soon find themselves lost as they explore the castle grounds.
Walking around the interior of the castle is just as interesting. Some of the highlights include the Palace of the Grand Masters, which include the summer and winter refectories, known for their distinctive high ceilings and large windows. One can also wander through the great dining hall, guests' chambers and reception rooms. The castle even has several rooms that had heated floors.
Another part of the castle holds St.Anne's Chapel, where several of the Grand Masters have been buried. Throughout the castle, one can find numerous examples of medieval art, including sculptures, stained glass windows, and decorations along the walls and doorways. A museum also exists within Malbork, which allows visitors to see displays of medieval arms and armour, and an impressive collection of amber, one of the key products from this region during the Middle Ages.
The victory of the Polish-Lithuanian king Jagiello over the Teutonic Knights at the battle of Grunwald in 1410 marked a turning point in the fortunes of the military order. The Poles attempted to capture the castle later that year, but the siege failed after several weeks. Still, the Teutonic Knights were weakened and gradually lost control of their state.
In 1457, Polish forces again approached Malbork, but they now used the more subtle tactic of bribing the mercenary guards into surrendering the castle. Since then, Malbork was fought over by the Poles, Swedes and Prussians. By the 19th century efforts were underway to restore parts of the castle, but the Second World War left Malbork heavily damaged. Parts of the castle still remain in ruins.
The red bricks and grand size of Malbork make this castle distinctive and awe-inspring -- any visitor will need at least two to three hours to explore the castle, and some could find themselves easily spending the whole day here. Malbork is a major tourist site, drawing more than a half-million visitors each year. The castle also holds concerts, theatrical performances and other special events, and in the third week of July it hosts the Siege of Malbork, a recreation of the 1410 siege in full historical regalia. The town of Malbork also has several historic sites, and this region of Poland is also home to other similar Teutonic fortresses.

Heroes of Warsaw Ghetto Uprising 1943, Monument commissioned in 1948 in Polish People's Republic
Quote Brzask newspaper 21.4.2018:
Andrzej Duda, speaking during the celebration of the 75th anniversary of the Warsaw ghetto uprising, spoke of the aid that the polish organisations had given to the fighting ghetto.
He forgot to add that the greatest aid in the form of weapons flowed from the polish working party, and a large role in the ghetto conspiracy was communists.
President Duda showed hypocrisy. He officially declares respect for the Jewish resistance. The facts say something completely different. President Duda Praises-National Armed Forces, and supports dekomunizację in which street patronage in Warsaw was taken among other Joseph Lewartowskiemu.
Lewartowski, the creator of the block operating in the ghetto is one of the conspirators without which it would be impossible for an armed uprising against the Nazis to Lewartowskiego, in 1942 during the raid, they killed Germany, currently andrzej duda and pis kill the memory of slugger.
Fortunately, there were people resembling this hypocrisy. On April 19, after an independent celebration of anniversaries organised by improvement and social organizations, there were suspended plates with his name on the zdekomunizowanej street. There were flowers on the stone stone.
Lewartowski, twórca Bloku Antyfaszystowskiego działającego w getcie to jeden z konspiratorów bez których udziału niemożliwy byłby wybuch zbrojnego powstania przeciwko nazistom.
Lewartowskiego, w roku 1942 podczas obławy, zabili Niemcy, obecnie Andrzej Duda i PiS zabijają pamięć o bojowniku.
--------------------------------------------------------------
The monument was raised in the square bordered by Anielewicza Street, Karmelicka Street, Lewartowskiego Street and Zamenhofa Street. From August 1942 until the end of the Warsaw ghetto this was the last location of the Judenrat. Also the site witnessed several clashes between the Warsaw Ghetto Jewish partisans and the German and auxiliary troops.
The decision to build a monument to the Ghetto partisans was made as early as in 1944, by the Central Committee of Polish Jews in Lublin. The monument was designed by Leon Suzin. The first part of the monument, a small memorial tablet, was unveiled on April 16, 1946; the plaque was in a shape of a circle, with a palm leaf, a Hebrew letter B ב, and a Hebrew, Polish and Yiddish inscription: For those who fell in an unprecedented and heroic struggle for the dignity and freedom of the Jewish people, for a free Poland, and for the liberation of mankind. Polish Jews.It was also decided to build a larger monument in the future.
The new, larger monument, sculpted by Nathan Rapoport (who worked under the supervision of Suzin), was unveiled on April 19, 1948.The monument stands 11 meters (36 ft) tall. As Rapoport himself explained, the wall of the monument was designed to evoke not just the Ghetto walls, but also the Western Wall (Kotel) in Jerusalem. The great stones would thus have framed the memory of events in Warsaw in the iconographic figure of Judaism's holiest site. The western part of the monument shows a bronze group sculpture of insurgents - men, women and children, armed with guns and Molotov cocktails. The central standing figure of this frieze is that of Mordechai Anielewicz (1919 – 8 May 1943) who was the leader of Żydowska Organizacja Bojowa (English: Jewish Combat Organization), also known as the ŻOB, during the uprising.
The eastern part of the monument shows the persecution of Jews at the hands of the Nazi German oppressors. The monument has a three-language sign: Jewish nation to its fighters and martyrs. The labradorite used in parts of the monument comes from the German supplies, ordered by Albert Speer in 1942 for planned Nazi German monuments.
After the Second World War, much of the fabric of the stone-and-granite of the Nazis Tannenberg Memorial was used to build the Soviet war memorial in Olsztyn, the Monument to the Ghetto Heroes in Warsaw, and for the new Communist Party headquarters in Warsaw.
